"Effort will never betray you."
Believe it. When you put a lot of effort into something, it might be too much. You won't gain more than the grand prize. On the other hand, exerting less effort than needed could not earn you the gold, but the silver and copper would be there for the taking.
And when you try to do enough, you will get what you expect. Perhaps this would be the most satisfying. You couldn't regret doing much and be disappointed, nor doing less and regret what you could have done.
"Though it may betray your dreams."
As you pay too much trust for the effort that you give, an unspoken truth will forever be heard despite nobody asking for it. That is talent.
Then, this is where comparison become a factor for depression. You may have the highest level of effort, the greatest hard working human of all time, but is it enough? Will your efforts be enough to reach your dreams?
Of course not.
Your dreams will not come true, even if you work hard for it. In fact, dreams do not become the reality, more often that they do.
Why?
Because effort is not something that bears fruit. So if you do expect one, you're just waiting for nothing. If it does, then you are lucky.
A one-way ticket for success cannot be bought by those who come with effort alone, though they can if they want progress.
In the end, you are just competing for the consolation prize.
