Mariah and Jeff both had taken off work the next day because Star and I were coming today and we could all get to know each other and get things settled.

The day had wore me out causing me to go to bed early. Star didn’t wake up till later in the middle of the night so Jeff didn’t get to meet her yet.

Overall today had been good, except my parents house, and I was glad to have Mariah.

In bed all I could think about was my friends. I still needed to talk to Mariah about them and the coma, but that could wait till tomorrow. With that thought in mind I fell asleep.

The next morning I was up early because Star started crying at 6 something. She then finally went back to sleep around 7.

Mariah and Jeff were still sleeping so I decided to make them breakfast to say thank you for taking me and Star in.

I searched around the kitchen to find something to make them. I found some pancake mix in one of the cupboards and some bacon in the fridge. I made the bacon first, I hate making bacon because of how it pops and sizzles but it taste good so I’m making it anyway.

Once I had the bacon made and put on a plate in the microwave to keep it warm, I started making the pancakes. I made the mix and then poured the batter into the same pan I used for the bacon. I had seen or heard somewhere that bacon grease taste good when you use it to cook with pancakes and frenchtoast.

As I was finishing up, Star started crying upstairs. I didn’t want to leave the food cooking so I tried to hurry up and finish before she started screaming.

I finished a few minutes later. I put all the food in the microwave and walked upstairs to Star’s room. She was sitting up in her bed looking at me, waiting for me. She stopped crying when I walked in her room.

“Good morning, baby.” I said picking her up and giving her a hug. She wrapped her tiny arms around my neck to hug me back.

“You wanna come with me to finish making breakfast and then wake up Mariah and Jeff for breakfast?” I asked her, pulling her body away from mine. I knew she would understand what I was saying but that she couldn’t respond in full sentences yet.

She nodded happily and we went back to the kitchen. I got the food out of the microwave and put it on the table. I gave Star the plastic plates and cups to take to the table. Then we got orange juice from the fridge to finish setting the table.

She just took off up the stairs, taking that as a yes I followed her. When I reached her she was standing in front of their bedroom door looking back at me in a questioning manner.

“When I knock on the door and they open the door you say ‘breakfast’ okay?” I whispered to Star when I got up to her.

I knocked twice and then waited. I heard movement and then the door was pulled open by Mariah.

Star didn’t waste a second, as soon as the door was open she said “Breakfast!” and then put her arms up to me to be picked up.

“I’m gunna go downstairs with Star and wait on you guys.” I said putting Star down and following her down the stairs.

Downstairs Star was already sitting at the table by the time I caught up with her. Her head didn’t reach over the table, I would need to get her a highchair soon. I looked around for something to put on the chair for Star to sit in. The only thing I found were some cookbooks in the kitchen. It took 3 for her to see over the top of the table.

“Oh, no. You’ve already done enough for me, you don’t need to do more. I still have some money I can use to get her some stuff that she needs. I could also get a job to make some more money to pay for anything else I’ll need to get.” It couldn’t be that hard to find a job around here, there were plenty of stores. The hard part would be getting a babysitter for Star, Mariah and Jeff both work so they couldn’t watch her.

“Aviana there is no need for you to get a job. You are living under our roof therefore we will pay for what you need. I can’t stop you from getting a job but I won’t let you pay for essentials that you and Star need. You’re still a kid, you don’t need to grow up any faster than you need to for Star.”

“Mariah’s right. We are here for you as if we were your parents, there’s no need for you to act like an adult yet. I mean you have to be responsible for Star but that’s it. We are here for you.” Jeff said, draping his arm around Mariah’s shoulders.

“You guys really don’t have to do this for us.” I didn’t know how to respond to that kind of affection, nobody had ever been this nice to me. My parents just gave me money and told me to do whatever as long as it didn’t ruin their picture perfect family and now I know what happens if I ruin that.

“Now that we got that settled, let’s eat this delicious breakfast Aviana made us.” said Mariah, sitting down in the chair closest to her. Jeff sat down to her left and I sat down across from him, between Mariah and Star.

We passed around the plates of food and the orange juice. I gave Star a little bit, cutting it up in small bites to prevent her from choking.

After we finished eating I washed all the dishes while Mariah and Jeff got ready to go. When I finished the dishes I got Star and I dressed. Then we went to the park where we watched Star play for a while.

She had a lot of fun in the park with the other little kids. Then we went to the mall, Mariah and Jeff paid for everything we bought. I got a bunch of new clothes, we got Star a high chair and some other essential items she needs, Mariah got her hair cut, and Jeff got a new video game.

By the time we got home it was late. Star was already asleep and I was really tired, but I still needed to talk to Mariah about the coma and my friends.

“Well you know how I was in a coma right?” I decided to start with what she knew before I got into the confusing part about my friends.

“Well while I was in the coma it was like I kept living my life without ever being in a coma. I was never in an accident or anything like that. But the weird part is that I wasn’t living in this area, it was like I lived somewhere else, that I had never lived anywhere else.”

“Well yeah but there’s more to it than just that. You see, in the coma, at this place, I had three other friends. We were super close, we did everything together and always hung out. This place and my friends felt so real. Like not even how dreams feel real and then you realize it was just a dream, it literally feels like I lived through it. When I woke up I seriously thought that I had fallen asleep with them and then somehow woke up in the hospital.”

“Do you think they’re real?” I did think they were real but the more I think about it the more doubt I have about it. I had never heard of them or seen them before the coma and then after the coma everyone thinks they aren’t real.
