Chapter 4
Luke’s POV
The next morning I woke up to annoying beeping sound. Without opening my eyes I used my hand to search for what was making the sound and shut it up before it woke everyone else up. I couldn't feel anything but sheets and blankets around me. Wait…I feel asleep on the couch with the others. Why am I in a bed?
I slowly open my eyes only to be blinded by brightness. It takes me a minute or so to finally get my eyes fully open. I looked around the room. All I could see was white walls. I finally found what was making the beeping noise, it was a heart monitor. I was in a hospital.
What happened? Everything was fine when I feel asleep? Where’s Alice? My friends? Star? The beeping got louder and faster causing people to come running into my room. What’s going on?
“HE’S AWAKE!!” The first girl walking into the room shouts. She’s dressed in scrubs with her hair tied back, she must be a nurse. I looked at her confused. Why wouldn't I be awake?
“What’s going on?” I ask whoever will answer me. There was a total of 5 people in my room. A doctor, I’m guessing from his white coat, 2 nurses, and 2 other people, a girl and a guy standing together who look vaguely familiar, but aren't dressed in hospital clothes. “Where’s Alice?! And my friends?” I continue when no one answered me.
The doctor looking one was the one to answer me. “Luke, you are at Park City Hospital. You were in a coma for 2 years.” He says in a calm voice trying to reassure me.
“A coma? What? No I wasn't. You’re lying. I was just with my friends and Alice and Star. We were watching movies. How did I get here? Where are they? I need to see them!” Why would they lie to me about this? I just need my friends. I want out of here.
The familiar women starts to speak. “Honey, what are you talking about? Which friends? And who’s Star?” The women has dark brown hair and blue eyes. She sounds like a mother worried about her son. She’s obviously not my mom because my parents are dead.
“Luke,” the doctor says to get my attention. I look towards him and he goes on. “What’s the last thing you remember before waking up here?” He asks me.
Well that’s an easy question. “Aviana, Star, Puck, Kenza, Alice and I were watching movies and having a sleepover at mine and Alice’s apartment. We all fell asleep during a movie and now here I am.” The women looked up worried at the man she’s standing with. He whispers something to her that I can’t hear.
The doctor looks over at the man and women, they having pleading looks on their faces like they want to say something. The doctor nods his head towards them. They both walk up so they are standing right next to the bed.
The man finally speaks with a question. “Do you know who we are?” The question surprises me. I’m supposed to know who they are?
“Uhh…I’m sorry, should I?” Both their faces fell as I said those words. The women turns to the man burying her face in his chest and stars crying. The man wraps his arms around her. Now I look at the man and see that he also has dark hair and blue eyes.
The doctor again talks but this time it’s directed toward the man and women. “I’m sorry, I’m going to have to ask you to please leave the room. I have to do some test to see what extent of damage the coma did to his brain.” Damage? What is he talking about? My brain isn't damaged. Everything’s fine. I just need to see my friends. How can they not see I’m fine?
The pair walk out of the room with the women still crying and the man holding her. I feel bad but I really don’t know who they are.
“We are going to run some test on you to find out what happened while you were in this coma. Is that alright with you Luke?” The doctor asked me when the man and women got out of the room.
“I guess, but I wasn't in a coma. I don’t understand what all this is about. I told you what happened last night. I couldn't have been in a coma for 2 years if I remember last night.” The doctor just gives me a sad look and turns away to talk to the nurses.
After a few minutes of me sitting in silence like a waiting duck, they walk me out of the room to a bunch of different rooms to get testing done on my brain.
It took hours upon hours for all this testing. It was boring and stupid. There’s nothing wrong. I wasn't even in a coma, but according to them I was. They haven’t even explained to me how I got in this supposed coma in the first place.
I was now back in my room. The same 5 people are in the room again. This time the man and women are seated next to the bed and the doctor and nurses were on the other side. “Luke, are you sure you don’t know who these 2 people are?” The doctor asked me. I reply instantly. “I’m absolutely sure. I have no clue who you are.” I say turning around to face the 2.
This time they don’t cry. They look at each other, then the man speaks. “Luke, we’re your parents. I’m Matt Greene and this is your mom; Violet Greene.”
“What? Parents? Impossible. Why are you doing this to me? My parents are dead. They died months ago. Who are you really?” The confusion and pain were crystal clear on my face at this point. Who would do this to me? Oh my God, what about Alice? I can’t imagine what she’s going through.
“Honey, what are you talking about? We’re right here. We never died.” The women says with confusion painted on her face. I need to see Alice. Wait. Alice, that’s it! I’ll talk to Alice. If I was in a coma then Alice can explain everything. She will tell me if these people are lying to me.
“Bring Alice here.” That’s all I say. I refuse to talk more to these people until Alice tells me what happened. I trust her more than anyone else. “I’m done with this conversation until I talk to Alice. Alone.” I say to them.
My “parents” look at each other and nod. The doctor speaks up saying; “Go get her. We’ll leave Luke here and Alice and him can talk alone when you get back.
They all leave me alone finally. I take this chance to find my phone and call my friends. It only took me a few minutes to find it. It was on a stand a foot away from the bed. I got up to get it then bring it back to my bed.
Once back in bed I scroll through my contacts looking for the first name I see. I don’t care whose it is. I just want to call one of them.
I scrolled through my contacts a bunch of times before it finally hit me that I didn't have any of their numbers. What is going on?
After the realization came, I set the phone down and at that second is when Alice came running in the room. She looks exactly the same. She even had her favorite shirt on.
“Lukey! You’re awake!” she squeals while jumping into the arms I had opened for her. I just laugh and hug her tight. “I missed you so much!” She says while I’m hugging her. I nod my head. “I missed you to Alice. I love you.”
I sat back down on the bed with Alice in my lap inhaling deeply trying to find a good way to ask her things. “So Alice I need to ask you some things, I need your honest answers okay?” I ask her. “Of course.” She says simply.
“Are those people who say they are our parents really our mom and dad?” She stares at me. “Yes.” I don’t know whether to be happy or not. I mean I love my parents but I had gotten used to not having them and taking care of Alice myself.
“Was I really in a coma for two years?” Her answer was instant. “Yes.” A sad look was present it her eyes.
“Last question,” I start, “Do I have friends named Kenza, Puck, and Aviana?” This time her eyes light up and she gets really happy. That must mean it’s true! “No,” What?! That can’t be right. I refuse to believe it. They have to be my friends. There’s no way they aren't my friends.
She must have seen the sad look on my face and continues talking. “But I've been having dreams about people with those names. They were your best friends. And Aviana had a daughter named Star! And in last night’s dream Aviana said Star could be my sister! Oh and I was sick but that was okay because in my dreams you are the best big brother ever! You took care of me and we watched movies all day with your friends! But I woke up when we were watching a movie.”
I was speechless. How could she of dreamt that? She basically dreamed exactly what we did yesterday. Maybe that’s because it actually happened. No that’s not true. I was in a coma. Everything proves it except my brain. I finally accepted that I was.
“Alice, are our parents alive in those dreams?” I ask cautiously. I decided to ask her questions about this dream life to see if they match up with what I experienced. “No, but that was okay. I had you and you’re friends. They made it all better.”
This was getting weirder and weirder the more we talked. I continued asking her questions and she said everything the way I experienced it.
After we talked, she said: “I like to sleep because I love those dreams. I would rather live that life than this one any day. I sleep as much as I can to go back to that place. It’s the best place ever.”
“Alice, that’s exactly what I thought was real until this morning when I woke up. I refuse to believe it wasn't real. You and I are going to find our friends. They are real and we will all be reunited again. I know it.” I say to her. She just smiles and lays down on my bed.
At that moment the door opens and the 5 people come back in. “Have you guys done your talking?” The doctor asks. I nod my head. “Yes, and I believe you guys. You two are my mom and dad.” I finish looking at my parents.
Everyone smiles. “Now, we are have to tell you what happened and how you ended up in a coma. Are you ready?” This time it was my dad talking. I simply nod my head and awaited to hear my story.
