You know when you lose someone and feel alone? You feel like you can't move on without the lost ones. You feel like you don't belong to this world anymore without them. You feel like your life is never complete without them. You feel like you need them. Fortunately, that wasn't the case for me. I was pretty content with my life, even after I lost my family. I did grieve for a long while, but once I knew I wasn't alone and that there were people who can stand by me and love me the way my family did, I knew there was still hope for a bright future despite the tragic past.1247Please respect copyright.PENANAfJ974eMNov
I was 6 when it happened. My parents drove to California to drop my sister off to college. They were on the roads while I was here in Los Angeles along with my childhood friend. Just an hour after I told them my goodbyes, we received a call from the hospital about the urgency of their situation. We hurried there at once, and the last thing I know is my family declared dead. Nothing was mentioned about the person in the other car; they fled once it happened as cowardly as they are. As much as I've learned throughout my entire life about forgiveness, I will never forgive the person who took my family away from me.
Since then I've been living with my mom's dearest friend and her son, Cody. He is the nicest, and he had always been there for me through the ups and downs of my life, and I'm really grateful for his support. He and I were pretty close, more like brother and sister, and we still are. He lived with his single mom since his dad ditched them for some secretary skank. He wasn't good for them, I believe, and I'm pretty darn sure Cody will never grow to be like his so-called father.
It's been ten years since the incident, and Katrina Williams couldn't be more welcoming. She paid my tuition fees till I was 15 and dropped out of high school. She understood that I didn't find myself there and that I couldn't handle the fact that everyone was looking at me like the poor orphan I actually am. I decided to leave school and take online classes instead.
"It's Friday! What do you guys have planned?" Kat asks, placing breakfast plates on the table for the three of us.
"Lazy day with the guys," I answer, taking a bite from my sandwich as I look through some of my grades online.
"Oh yeah?"
"Oh, no, we are going to Amber's part tonight," informs Cody as he snatches the laptop from me.
"Hey!"
"I just want to check something," he tells me. "Wow, that grade is awful!"
I punch him hard on his shoulder as Kat comments on our childish behavior. "Who's Amber?"
"A girl from our school," Cody left the table to grab some OJ from the fridge.
"You mean a slut from your school." I then direct my words to Kat, "She's awful."1247Please respect copyright.PENANAh7c1m4WbTI
"Nicole hates her since middle school," Cody comments, smiling mischievously at me.
"Don't you have classes to attend?" I smile sarcastically at him, and he sighs. He kisses his mom, grabs his bag, and sticks his tongue at me before leaving the house.
"How mature!" I yell at him, making sure he hears me clearly. I smile to myself, going back to my screen. My smile fades when I notice the awful grade Cody mentioned. I silently close the laptop and smile grimly at Kat as she gives me a suspicious look.
