1991.
He had to pick her up at twelve o'clock and didn't want to be too early so he took a slow drive along the seafront. He stopped at a traffic light in Camps Bay and watched the dark tanned young men and women in their surfing suits and bikinis walking across the road balancing their colorful surfboards on their heads and smiling in a carefree manner at the long line of motorists. What a life for a young guy. He thought.
He continued his drive along the Atlantic Coast and when he got to the top of Chapman's Peak he could see Llandudno with it's beautiful white beaches in the distance. Driving the Porche through the bends on the side of the mountain he thought this must be the best drive in the world. He had a quick look out to the sea which went on for-ever. There were a couple of container ships in the background and as the sun shone the reflection gave it a mix of colors. There were patches of blue and turquoise with dots of white and as the waves hit the rocks the water would splash up causing it to spray onto the fishermen.
He arrived at her address and parked in the street. The house was a Cape Dutch style with a slate roof. He sat there for a minute, took in a deep breath, picked up the bouquet of flowers on the seat next to him and got out the car.
Walking the few steps to the front door he got a funny feeling in his stomach. He was a bit apprehensive and wondered. Will she be pleased to see me. What she look like. She opened the door and all the fears that he had, disappeared. Wow she is even more beautiful than I had thought she would be. She had looked after herself well and it seemed that time had stopped for her. Since he last saw her, eighteen years ago her figure hadn't changed, if anything it looked a bit trimmer. Her hair was still long and blond and she still had the bronze tan.
"Kim. I can't believe it." --- David stood back looking at her.---"You're just as beautiful as I imagined you to be. I'v so much, looked forward to this moment. You won't believe me..."
"Davy, Davy, you're still the little charmer like you always were. I can still remember you paying me compliments when you were eight. It's so nice to see you, please come in, otherwise the neighbors will start talking."
They were really happy to see each other. He handed her the bouquet. "I hope you like them."
"Oh thanks,"she said."You shouldn't have." She led him to the sitting room."Take a seat while I put these in a vase."
David looked around her sitting room. She's done this very nicely with the mix of furniture pieces. That picture is also nice. Then she re-appeared with the flowers in the vase.
"Davy, these are beautiful. Let me kiss you." She said, then bent down to kiss him on the cheek. "I'll put some powder on my nose and then we can go.Okay."
While Kim was doing touch-ups, David walked around the sitting room looking at the different things she had scattered.
"David, my apologies,"---she shouted from her bedroom--- "Can I get you something to drink?"
"No it's Okay..." he realized that she called him David. "Oh, by the way, that's the first time you called me David."
"Oh, I'm sorry. Now I remember. You don't like to be called Davy, do you."
"It's a complex I have. I always think, Davy is a little boy's name."
She came out the bedroom looking ravishing in a white cotton dress which hung loosely on her. David couldn't help but to complement her. "You look lovely Kim."He said.
He opened the car door and as she sat down her dress pulled up showing some of her thigh."Wow." He thought to himself.
"What a lovely car David. You must be doing very well to be able to own a Porche."
"I don't own it Kim. I've rented it from Hertze. I did that so I could impress you." He looked at her. "And have I?"
She looked at him."David," she said with a frown. "You could impress me if you arrived to pick me up in a beach buggy. But, I must say being driven around in a Porche is a lot nicer."Then she smiled.
He saw the dimples in her cheeks that he remembered she had as a child. "You should never stop smiling..."
"Why?"
"Because you're more beautiful when you do." He said and then turned his attention to the road."I'ts so difficult to concentrate on the road with you sitting next to me."
"Oh come on David, stop it now. That's enough flattering for the day."She said as she felt herself blushing."Look at me now, I'm blushing."
David smiled."By the way where are we going?" When he turned onto the main road, he turned right, going the opposite direction that he had come.
"If you like seafood you're on the right road, if not we might have to make a u-turn."
"I love seafood."
As they pulled up to the restaurant David imagined. It looks like it's been taken off a Greek island and placed over here. The building was painted white and the roof, doors and window frames a bright blue. In the area most of the buildings had been well preserved and a lot of them had been turned into trendy restaurants, a pub, a coffee shop, gift shops and antique dealers. They had the choice of either sitting inside where it was cozy or outside where it was sunny.
For him it didn't matter. It was a lovely day and if it got too hot they could always ask for an umbrella."Where would you like to sit."
"I would prefer to sit outside if you don't mind." Looking at her tan he could see that she spent a lot of time in the sun.The waiter led them to a table.
They had a good view of the harbor and could see the boats as they came and went. All the yachts were anchored at one section, close to where the club was and the fishing boats that had gone out for the mornings catch were now returning to their part of the harbor and unloading what-ever they had caught. A lot of the catch would be sold to the people who had stood there patiently waiting for their return and the balance would go to Irven And Johnson a fisheries company who had a factory close by.
The waiter went off and returned with the bottle of wine they had ordered. He filled both glasses and the bottle was put in an ice bucket to keep cool. A lot of memories returned as they spoke about the old times and of both his and her families, what had done since leaving school or university? They laughed at some of the stories and were saddened by others.
"And what are you doing now." It was something she never really asked people because it wasn't something that concerned her but earlier he said that he looked after people and made sure that they were safe, she had thought that he was involved in some sort of security business.
"I'm a consultant for Modern Life Assurance so if you're wanting some life insurance I have some proposals in my car. It won't take long for me to complete one..." He broke off and chuckled to himself because he was used to the reaction he got from people the moment he mentioned that he sold insurance. Normally that's how far people would go in their questioning then they would change the subject.
"Oh, is it," murmured Kim."At the moment I don't need life assurance, but should I need it in future I'll give you a call." She said in all honesty not thinking that David was joking with her.
"Thanks."He said still smiling to himself.
"Have you been in the business long?"
"About twelve years."He replied.
"Goodness me. You can't be doing that well if it has taken you twenty years to ask me if I need insurance." She said looking at him, it was her turn to laugh.
"Kim what happened to your dream of becoming a Springbok like your dad?"
"David, if you don't mind that is one part of my life I would rather not talk about. At least not now. It hurts too much to even think about it."
"I'm sorry. I won't mention it again."
They had their meal and another bottle of wine. By the time they had finished it was close to six o'clock. "David I should be getting home."
"Do you have to leave now? I was just beginning to enjoy myself."
"I have to get home. There are a few things I need to do."
As they were driving back she asked him if he would like to come for dinner the following evening. He was glad that she did the asking, at least she enjoyed his company.
"That would be lovely, what time should I come around?"
"Seven o'clock. Is that okay."
He dropped her off at home and as she walked up the steps she stopped, turned around and waved. As she did that he saw the out line of her figure as the sun shone through her dress.God she is beautiful. He though as he felt a little tingling in his head.
