This was just wonderful, now I had no choice but to explain to Veronica what I was. Later, I would be having a discussion with Alpha Jordan about his Beta. Overexposing our kind was the definition of disaster.
"Beta Erik?" I mind-linked.
"Yes, Alpha?"
"Find out everything you can about the Riverton pack. They have a request for me to appear at a meeting tomorrow morning. Also, dig up dirt on that piece of crap Beta," I growled.
"I'm on it Alpha. By the way, how's the date going?" He snickered.
My wolf growled at his words. Blocking the pack again, I turned my attention to Veronica who was quietly sitting in the car. I rested my hand on her ice cold knee and smiled at her, but she frowned back at me.
"What is an Alpha?" She asked bluntly, staring right into my eyes.
I inhaled deeply and pulled the car over to the side of the road.
"Veronica, I want to be completely honest with you, but I don't think you're ready to hear what I need to tell you." She bit her bottom lip and twirled her thumbs around each other.
My wolf howled in despair and paced back and forth, shaking out his fur, for my mate was confused and hurting.
I placed my fingers at the bottom of her chin and lifted her head up. "Do you really want to know?"
"I do." I could see the steely determination form on her face.
"Show mate. Show mate."
My wolf paced around furiously, howling, begging me relentlessly to shift and show her who I truly was. He was impatient, desperate, and I could empathize. But not now, when she was confused, clueless and possibly scared and frightened of the unknown.
Humans were easily scared and would block out anything that didn’t fit their logic. I would rather have a tiny piece of Veronica than none at all. Still, lying to her would mean deeming me as untrustworthy and a stuck-up liar. The best option now was to answer her truthfully but evasively, giving her glimpses of the truth so she wouldn’t be frightened by it.
"An Alpha is pretty much like a king. It's like a ranking system much like hierarchy.”
"And a Beta is what?" She interrupted.
I had her full attention at this moment. Her blue eyes were glued to me like a moth drawn to a flame.
"A Beta is the second in command. He follows the Alpha’s instructions and only answers to him.”
The wheels in her head were turning as she took this information in. The last thing I needed was to overload her with information and realize what I truly was.
I rubbed my hand down my face and looked blankly ahead. The trees were swaying back and forth in the wind and the leaves that had fallen off danced across the street.
Veronica was still quiet and from past experiences, that wasn't a good thing. I turned my body to her and stroked her long hair. It was so soft and smelled like lavender.
The urge to mark her and make her mine was getting more and more intense by the day. My wolf would howl and growl at me all night long, making sleep impossible. After I met her, he blocked me out completely until we saw her beautiful face again, then he would jump around like a puppy wagging its tail.
She turned and looked at me with a smile. "I don't know why, but I trust you. If you don't think I'm ready to know, I will wait."
"Where have you been all of my life?" I smiled, moving in and rubbing my nose gently against hers.
Leaning down, I nestled my nose in her neck and shoulder, smelling the sweetness of her lavender skin. I then placed my mark, letting every werewolf know that she was mine.
"Mine, " I whispered, breathing her in deeply once more.
"SEBASTIAN, NO!" She screamed, just as my ears started ringing and she fell silent.
