My mouth must have hit the floor as I sat in complete and utter shock. How could this even be possible? Out of all the people in Black Lace, why did the person I happened to like have to be a werewolf?
"Sebastian, that sounds a little off." I said, careful with my words to not piss him off.
This was a lot for me to digest, and I wasn't sure I wanted to be a part of this, not to mention I'm a human, not some paranormal creature who could shift to an animal instinctively. full blown human.
"Would you like to see for yourself since you don't believe me? We can stand on the patio and one of my men can change. It-"
"Wait, there's more than one of you?" I interrupted, rubbing my face in a sweeping motion and placing my cheek on my hand to calm my nerves.
For some odd reason, I assumed that the protectors were just there to protect him, and not because they were werewolves too. My head was pounding from all of the shock and my body ached from the stress.
"Veronica, these men are part of my pack. This is the pack house where the most important wolves from other packs meet us and where my men train and gather for meetings. The Alpha and Beta’s family live here."
Slowly, the pieces were coming together, forming a coherent image that I could understand.
Taking in a deep breath, I decided to dive into the issue headfirst. "So you're the Alpha of the pack and Erik is your Beta?" I questioned, hoping my answer was correct.
Instantly, the weight from Sebastian's shoulders lifted as his face softened and his muscles released the harbored tension. Relaxed and calm, he crouched between my legs and placed his hands on my knees.
"That is correct," He smiled.
"Are the protectors your warriors?" I asked, squinting my eyes, afraid of being wrong.
"Correct," He nodded again.
"Wait, don't you need a spouse to be an alpha?" I asked. Honestly, I had no idea, I just wanted to hear his answer.
A smile grew on his face as he leaned forward and kissed my forehead tenderly. The electric shocks were still fluttering through my body, but this time magnified by the prolonged contact of his hands on my knees and his lips on my skin.
"Let me show you, Veronica." He smiled, his hand in mine.
Pulling me up out of the chair, we walked to the patio where I stood gazing at the men in the fighting ring. Sebastian was strangely silent, even when a protector came running to the bottom steps.
"Yes, Alpha?" The lanky boy asked. He was no more than 20 years old, but was obviously in charge of the others. His silky black hair was swept to the side and his big brown eyes stared at Sebastian diligently.
"Noah, this is Veronica. I would like you to change for her, and show her how it's done." He ordered.
"Yes, Alpha." He bowed and walked to the center of the yard.
In a matter of seconds, Noah grabbed his body and yelled in pain. His hands were replaced with long sharp claws and sprouting hair. Watching in horror, his ears started elongating and pointing at the tips. Black hair began covering his alabaster skin as his clothes ripped apart at the seams.
The sound of bones crunching and breaking made my stomach turn. His body twisted in the most inhuman ways as he continued to moan in pain. Being forced onto all fours, his face now resembled a snout with glowing yellow eyes. His teeth were sharp and deadly with drool dripping down its muzzle.
All of this only took one minute for Noah to change into this black beast. I was frozen in place, my eyes wide in shock. "H- how is that possible?" I cried out.
The black beast’s paws pounded against the earth as he inched closer to the stairs towards me as I screeched at him to stay back.
Sebastian noticed my anguish and wrapped his arms around me and held me tight. The calming effect took over my body once again eased me into a peacefulness. Peering over his shoulder, I saw the beast sitting still with its tail thumping against the ground, his mouth wide open, panting.
"He won't hurt you. He wants to know if you want to come a little closer to him," Sebastian said sweetly. "I will be right here with you."
His smile was reassuring, that I would be safe. "How do you know that?" I asked, my eyes blinking curiously.
"It's called mind-linking. I can talk to everyone in the pack who is a werewolf and they can talk back to me. It makes communicating much more efficient.”
“Uh, that explains a lot. Even more crap I need to digest," I thought. This was too much for one day, but since I was already knee deep into the situation, I might as well keep digging my grave.
My heart was pulsating in my chest and ears as I took a few steps down the stairs. Closely watching every step I took, I prayed I wouldn't fall flat on my face. Making it safely to the bottom, I sighed in relief.
Noah was massive, no less than seven feet tall. His sharp claws dug deep into the earth, leaving pawprints with every step. As his tail swished back and forth, his muscles rippled when he gracefully skidded to a sudden halt in front of me.
His black fur glinted under the afternoon sun, ruffled by the warm wind. Hesitantly, I raised my hand to touch his fur. A human-like snort escaped from him, and he nuzzled his face into my hand, eyes closed.
Running my hand down his back, the fur knotted and tangled to my touch, coarse yet soft. Heat emanated beneath the layers of fur, almost as scorching as a hearth. Slowly, he opened his eyes, the ambient yellow color glowing with an unnatural brightness. Gradually, they softened to a dull amber, lips pulling up to a wolfish smile
I rubbed his belly and held onto his paw, drinking in every little detail. On his underbelly was a single white stripe. As I trailed my finger down it, Sebastian let out with a husky growl. Shooting him a nasty look, he quickly retreated.
"Are all werewolves this sweet?" I questioned Sebastian while talking babyish to Noah. "Who's a good boy? You're a good boy."
"No they are not, and they are not puppies you play with either." He barked back at me with his arms crossed angrily across his chest.
Now pissed at his tone, I stood away from Noah and crossed my arms.
"Well if you're showing me all this, you do plan for me to be part of the pack one way or another, right? So if I want to play with the wolves and they don't care, who the hell are you to tell me I can't?"
And the word vomit started again. I cringed at myself for disrespecting him and prepared myself for his lashing words.
Straightening his back, his dominance radiated off of him like rays from the sun. Still holding my ground, he pinched the part between his nose and eyes and shook his head.
"Yes, I would like you to be a part of this pack. However, you should never disrespect me, especially in front of the pack," He growled back.
Bending over one last time to pet Noah, I turned on my heel and walked right past Sebastian, smirking when his eyes bulged in shock. He wanted to see disrespect, so I would show him exactly that.
Fuming, I made my way to the front of the house where I saw Erik sitting on the step with his arms crossed around his knees. Hearing my footsteps, he turned around and smiled.
"What's up little lady?" He asked.
"Can you take me home?" I pleaded.
He looked around and nodded his head slightly. He must have mind linked Sebastian to see if it was okay. Holding his elbow out for me to take, he walked me to the Jeep and opened the door.
Sliding into the car, he put one hand on the roof and one hand on the door, bending down closer to me to whisper something.
The feel of his breath on my ear gave me goosebumps, but not the same kind I got from Sebastian. It was simply the sensation of easy light breaths that made my body react.
“I'm a werewolf too,” He smiled before closing the door. Dumbfounded and speechless, I sat in silence and let my mind wander into oblivion.
