The next morning he woke up feeling great. It had been a long time since he felt like that. I did my toiletries and then walked up to the lodge. Copper’s van and trailer was gone. I looked to see if he had moved it but that wasn’t the case. It was nowhere to be seen in the parking lot. He must have left earlier. I walked to reception and asked if he had booked out. “Yes he came and paid last night just before going up to her room.” The young lady behind the reception counter said.
“Whose room did you say?”
“The beautiful lady with the red dress, I think they were going to her room because he had his one hand around her waist and a bottle of champagne in the other. She was kissing him as they walked up the stairs.” She said smiling and showing her beautiful white teeth.
“Yes okay. I don’t need to hear all the minor details.” He turned around and walked to the dining hall, not in good mood. As he walked inside he saw her sitting at one of the tables with the older Belgium gentleman. “Good morning.” I said in a voice loud enough for everybody to hear me then I went to sit down at the table that was reserved specially for me.
One of the waiters new exactly what he would have when he came in; he brought pot of black coffee and then rushed off to the kitchen.
While he was sitting there she walked up to him before going out the hall. “Hello David, has Copper gone?” She asked.
“I assume he has. His van and trailer are no longer in the parking area.” he replied.
“Oh that’s such a pity. I wanted to leave something with him.” She said while scratching in her bag. She took out a card from a small silver card holder and wrote something on the back of it. “Can you please give him this the next time you see him?”
“I don’t know if I will see him.” He said a bit sarcastically.
“Oh yes, I think you will. Goodbye.” She stuck her hand out.
He stood up shook her hand. “Goodbye, I hope you enjoyed your stay?” He said and then sat down to finish my breakfast.
“Oh yes, I did.” Then she kissed me on the cheek and walked out.
He looked at the card.

At the back of the card she had written. Thank you, for the lovely evening.
He thought to himself. “That bugger calls himself a gentleman. Then he smiled to himself and thought what a lucky sod.”
He was standing in the reception area greeting the folk that were leaving on the bus back to Lusaka; he was about to tear up the card when she came into reception with a porter carrying her suitcases 2 steps behind her. With a broad smile she said. “Please contact me if you come to Paris.” She said.
He smiled back showing her the card and nodding my head as if to say okay.
Simon came out the office. “Hey Dave you should have seen her and Copper last night.”
“Simon stop, he really don’t want to hear what our guests have been up to, okay.” He turned and walked off to my bungalow.
“Copper is a real asshole.” He thought then pulled the card out his pocket tore it in half and threw it away. Later he felt guilty and went to look for the pieces. He found them and took them back to my room. “He will have to wait till I get back before he can phone her.”
Robbie had gone to see Marianne about investing some of her inheritance. He had heard from one of his bank buddies that she had Rand 500,000.00 to invest. He got an appointment to go and see her which was normally not the case. The clients would always come into the office to see him but because she happened to be Kim’s step mother and he didn’t want Kim to know that she was doing business with him.
He arrived at her house in the Bentley and Marianne was immediately impressed by the way he was dressed and how he presented himself. He introduced himself and he spoke highly of Kim but he stressed that she should not know what Marianne was doing because family tend to interfere in things that they nothing about and that caused many investors to lose money. Because he already knew how much she had to invest all his figures were based on the Rand 500,000.00. He told her that the money would be used to fund an arbitrage deal that had already been done. He showed her pictures of a building in Sea Point that is to be purchased and mentioned the name of a fund that was to purchase it. He showed her what she could expect to receive after six months when the deal was finalised and he received a cheque from the byers.
Marianne stressed that she needed the money after six months because she had to pay Kim her inheritance. Robbie then gave her a name of a lady that he knew was known by the Barnards and told her to phone this lady if she wanted a second opinion on the investment that she was doing.
Marianne decided that she would put the total amount into the investment because she had faith in Robbie and trusted him. She asked what proof she would get from him that she had invested that money to which, he replied that she would get everything that he showed her today in the post the following week.
Six months later when the maturity of her investment was due she received nothing. in fact since she had done the business with Robbie she had heard or received nothing from him.
She tried phoning but each time he was out of the office. She phoned Kim to come and see her and told her the story.
Kim told her not to worry. She was sure there was some mistake. The next day she went to see him in his office. He told her not to interfere with his business and when she persisted he fired her.
