When she got home, she opened the door with the key Jim gave her just that morning. She was so happy that he was not inside, waiting for her, to talk to her. She was actually surprised that she did not see Mr. Moon’s car in the driveway.
She wished she had her backpack. She would have worked on her homework, to get back to the real world, to get her mind off of things. She would have been normal again.
As Jade closed her eyes on the living room couch, she could only picture Storm coming after her, barley stabbing her. It must have been made up as well, it was just like the world inside Mr. Moon’s closet.
“Meow,” Jade heard.
The orange cat had jumped on her, staring at her, inches from her face. She sat back up, hugging the cat.
“Oh George, thank God you’re here,” she said, ignoring the silly feeling she had as she spoke to the cat as if he was a human being too. She didn’t care, she needed to speak to something. “I’ve had the weirdest day. I think I was drugged, does that make sense?”
George just stared.
“I know, long shot, but something was going on. Can I tell you about my day?”
The cat seemed to nodded a little bit, closing his eyes and purring on Jade’s lap. She sat back, petting his soft fur. “So, this week has been weird. Mr. Moon gave me a test, and I failed it. I know I picked the right answers. Remember how I told you about seeing that tea cup and that waiter’s pen? Well, I can see answers to test too! Anyways, he showed me . . .this thing, in his closet. He showed me a world . . .”
“The Inbetween? Oh, he showed you today?” the cat said to her.
“Yeah . . . . whoa, whoa, whoa!” Jade screamed, throwing the cat off her lap and jumping back from the couch as far as her little legs would let her. “No! No! Not today, of all day. Wait a second, maybe I am still drugged up? Maybe that’s what it is. Whatever Mr. Moon gave me . . . yeah, that’s it.”
Jade picked up the cat, holding him to her face. “Right?”
“No, Jade, I can talk,” George said her. She seemed to almost freeze. “Jade?”
She dropped the cat, staring at him.
