Pacing back and forth in the hospital room, I nervously glanced at Erik who stood by the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest and his jaw clenched. Now I had to deal with two people pissed off at me instead of one.
"Why did you say that? Did you want to drive her away?" He lashed out, taking a few steps closer to me.
"I was telling her the truth, Erik, isn't that what you would have done?"
"No, it's not. I would have told her gently, so you didn’t look like a controlling asshole." He spit out while puffing up his chest.
I bit my lip and ran my fingers through my hair. He had no place to speak to me that way, I was his Alpha.
"Guys, please stop. Let's figure out a way to fix this situation." Tessa intervened, which Erik replied with a relieved smile of his own.
Slumping against the wall, I exhaled deeply, attempting to clear my head from all that anger. "Where did Veronica go?" I asked.
Both of their replies were just as clueless as mine.. I quickly exited the room, mind linking Mitchell. He was supposed to be at the pack house for a meeting, so I was praying that he had seen her.
"Mitchell, have you seen Veronica? There was a disagreement and now she’s gone."
There was no response. I waited for a few seconds and tried again, but he did not respond,
Everyone! Go look for Veronica, now! Breaking into long strides, I checked the office and the bottom rooms first. As I approached the basement door, her scent caught my attention. "She's in the cells!" I bellowed to everyone who could hear me.
Ripping the door off its hinges, I ran down the steps as her scent began to fade. Fading like she had vanished into thin air.
Standing at the steel door, the lock was missing and was left slightly ajar. She must have forgotten to put the lock back on when she left, which meant she left in quite a hurry.
A protector quickly slid past me, checking to ensure the cells were clear of any danger. Still, I was too eager. I rushed in without warning, scaring the protector aiding me.
"Wake up you fools!" I screamed, my voice bouncing off the cold metal.
"Where is she?" I stopped in front of Cade's cell, who was relaxing on his cot, acting as if I wasn't even there. "I said, where is she?"
He gave me a cocky smile, pushing himself up, walking towards the bars. "You mean my mate? You just missed her."
His words sliced through my body like a molten hot knife, leaving me burning. How dare he say that she was his mate?! He was nothing but scum on the bottom of my shoe, and Veronica? She was my world.
"Torture him until he tells you why she was here." I ordered, storming out of the room and ripping the door away from me.
She must have thought that she had no other option but to go into the cells by herself and figure out how to bring Cade and the rest of the rogues to Miranda. I honestly had no idea why she would do this, but she was tearing me apart.
"Please mark her, and make her ours!" My wolf howled, upset that our mate was gone, again.
"I can't do that. I know you are upset, but we will find her." I reassured him.
"I just want our mate." He whimpered.
At that moment, the house fell silent, like time had stopped. Walking to the front door, I slowly opened it, wincing as the metal hinges squealed in reply.. A burst of cold air whipped past my body, stinging my skin as it flew by. As I stepped onto the patio, a voice rang through my head, saying the most precious words I longed to hear.
"I am with her, Alpha." Mitchell replied.
Exhaling in relief, I slid my hands down my face, wiping away the perspiration that had started to form.
"Alpha, she needs you," Mitchell stated, his voice low and soft.
"I am on my way." I answered, shifting into a wolf once more.
