Tulia était en train d'installer une table de fortune au milieu des marchands et elle joignait ses cris aux leurs pour attirer les clients. Elle n'avait trouvé que ce moyen pour avoir un peu d'argent, car pour pouvoir continuer son voyage vers le pays de Vhramp, il lui fallait payer sa place sur un bateau. Le voyage durerait une lune et il faudrait qu'elle tienne avec ses économies jusqu'à l'arrivée. Elle déploya donc la tactique qu'elle utilisait à chaque escale de voyage et aujourd'hui, elle se remplissait les poches plus qu'à l'accoutumée. En effet, il y avait foule ce jour-là, ce qui était normal puisqu'elle était à Bourqua. La ville était le centre de croisement de tous les voyageurs et de tous les marchands. Même après avoir plumé tous ces gens, elle pourrait revenir sans aucun souci de revoir l'un d'entre eux et continuer sa petite affaire jusqu'à ce qu'elle jugeât sa bourse suffisante.
Elle mélangea les cartes avant d'en disposer trois sur la table tout en avisant les joueurs qui se tenaient en face d'elle. En ce moment, c'étaient trois hommes qui tentaient leurs chances tandis qu'un attroupement de badauds s'était formé autour de la table et observait le jeu.
- Allez, messieurs, n'allez pas me dire que vous avez peur ! Soyez confiants, vous avez la possibilité de doubler votre mise ! Allez ! Vous n'avez qu'à choisir, où est la bonne carte ? À gauche, à droite ou au centre ?
L'un se gratta la gorge tout en se concentrant sur les cartes puis se jeta à l'eau :
- Très bien, je mise et je dis la droite.
- Ah ? Voyons cela... Eh non ! Désolée mon brave, vous pouvez retenter votre chance si vous voulez.
Ce qu'elle n'espérait pas sinon ils finiraient tous pas découvrir le pot aux roses. Les deux autres hommes découragés, abandonnèrent à leurs tours et bientôt, l'assistance, lassée de voir les clients perdre, s'allégea petit à petit.
- Aïe, il va falloir en faire gagner quelques-uns sinon il n'y aura plus personne, se maugréa-t-elle.
Il était évident qu'aucun joueur ne pouvait gagner, car son jeu était truqué. Les cartes disposées sur la table étaient toutes les mêmes et c'est ainsi que si une personne demandait à toutes les voir, elle serait démasquée. Mais elle ne pouvait pas encore s'arrêter là, elle était trop éloignée de sa ville d'origine pour rebrousser chemin et encore trop loin de sa ville de destination. Rien ne la rattachait plus nulle part, elle était née orpheline et avait grandi dans les ruelles des bourgs, vivant, tantôt de petits larcins, tantôt de petits travaux qu'elle arrivait à dénicher. Aussi s'était-elle décidée à s'en aller pour Vhramp, car la ville était célèbre pour ses grands spectacles et ses fêtes qui s'y déroulaient tout au long de l'année. Étant une acrobate hors pair, elle souhaitait entrer dans une troupe qui lui permettrait de mettre en valeur ses talents plutôt que de les réserver au vol. Peut-être deviendra-t-elle connue et viendra-t-on la voir depuis toutes les contrées ? Elle ne voulait pas remettre sa destinée au hasard, elle voulait en rester maîtresse. Néanmoins, les choses ne se passaient pas toujours comme prévu car elle ne devait pas passer par Bourqua. En effet, dans son escale précédente, elle avait dû repousser les avances d'un général qu'elle avait rencontré en lui assenant une cruche sur la tête et elle avait dû s'enfuir précipitamment sans oublier, bien entendu, d'emporter avec elle, la bourse de l'officier. Cependant, elle avait oublié, par mégarde, la carte où étaient renseignés ses escales et les lieux de rencontre des troupes et troubadours en partance pour Vhramp. Bon. Il était vrai qu'elle avait observé le général pendant la journée tandis qu'il déambulait entre les étals d'un marché, tout en dépensant de fortes sommes d'argent. Elle avait alors décidé d'en faire sa proie et l'avait suivi, le soir venu, dans une fête animée de danseuses dans l'auberge où il séjournait. Son but avait été de se faire remarquer par lui et lui faire boire plus que de raison afin qu'il puisse tomber d'un lourd sommeil jusqu'au lendemain. Elle aurait alors eu tout le loisir de s'insérer dans sa chambre pour lui subtiliser son argent tranquillement. Mais son plan avait échoué, car l'officier l'avait surprise dans ses appartements et elle avait alors dû jouer la carte de la séduction pour se sortir de ce quiproquo, puis abattre une cruche sur la tête de sa victime qui s'était évanouie sur le coup. Elle s’était ensuite enfuie précipitamment au hasard et ses pas l'avaient dirigée vers cette grande ville. Le hasard avait du bon quelquefois car elle avait triplé sa bourse depuis le jour où elle avait atterri ici.
Elle s'apprêtait à crier pour attirer l'attention des clients potentiels, lorsqu'elle aperçut justement son général déambuler parmi la foule.
- Bon sang, qu'est-ce qu'il fait là ?! Quelle guigne ! Pesta-t-elle.
Elle s'exhorta à ranger ses cartes rapidement et débarrassa l'étal où elle s'était installée, non sans garder un œil sur le ventre exagérément tendu de son indésirable ami. Il était entouré de deux gardes et semblait chercher quelque chose. Elle ? Non, ce n'était pas possible, comment aurait-il su qu'elle était ici ? Et pourquoi perdrait-il son temps à la rechercher ? Non, il était là pour autre chose. Soudain, elle se frappa le front, mais oui ! Pendant la soirée qu'elle avait passée avec lui, elle se rappela vaguement qu'il lui avait parlé de sa destination et d'une rencontre entre les différents généraux des contrées voisines à laquelle il devait participer ! Elle devait se passer à Bourqua ! Ce n'était vraiment pas de veine, que pouvait-il lui arriver de pire ? Se demanda-t-elle, abattue. Il fallait qu'elle s'éclipse aussi discrètement qu'elle le pouvait, mais au moment où elle voulut se fondre dans la foule, le général tourna les yeux dans sa direction et elle baissa promptement les siens. L'avait-il reconnue ? Elle ne pouvait pas reculer car son étal était collé à un mur, elle avança donc en tentant de se cacher derrière le flot des passants, mais l'officier garda son attention vers sa position. Apparemment, il n'était pas réellement sûr de ce qu'il avait vu. Une vague de badauds les séparait et ils entrèrent alors tous deux dans un jeu de cache-cache qui pouvait presque prêter à sourire. Mais en constatant que la femme qu'il poursuivait le fuyait délibérément, le général n'eût plus aucun doute quant à son identité et se mit à courir après elle en jurant. Néanmoins, sa masse graisseuse et ses apparats semblaient le ralentir, ce qui donna de l'avance à Tulia.
- Attrapez-la ! L'entendit-elle ordonner à ses gardes qui tentaient de se frayer un chemin à travers la foule.
Tulia regarda par-dessus son épaule et constata qu'ils se rapprochaient. Il fallait qu'elle trouve refuge dans un lieu où ils ne pourraient pas venir la débusquer ou ne voudraient pas s'aventurer. Heureusement qu'elle avait fait une reconnaissance des lieux à son arrivée dans la ville. Elle se disait toujours que la survie dépendait d'une très bonne organisation. Avisant un canal d'eau à sa gauche, un peu plus loin, elle jugea que c'était l'endroit idéal et accéléra donc sa course tout en sautant par-dessus une carriole de fruits.
- Essayez donc de faire mieux ! Les nargua-t-elle en jetant un regard derrière elle.
Elle vit alors l'un des gardes s'étaler à terre en entraînant la carriole avec lui tandis que le deuxième la poursuivait encore. Elle tourna enfin dans une ruelle pavée à sa gauche et descendit quelques marches avant d'arriver à un quai où était amarrée une petite barque. Elle y sauta et coupa les amarres avant d'entreprendre de ramer en direction d'un tunnel qui s'enfonçait sous les fondations de la ville. À bout de souffle, elle risqua un coup d'œil vers le quai pour voir le général et ses deux sbires y débouler. Apparemment, ils comptaient bien l'attendre là et elle ne pouvait plus revenir sur ses pas. Qu'à cela ne tienne ! Elle connaissait assez bien ce lieu. D'ailleurs, elle commençait déjà à sentir l'odeur nauséabonde des eaux usées. La rame dont elle se servait s'était déjà noircie au contact de l'eau souillée, qui, plus elle avançait, semblait devenir purée. Elle avait atteint le tunnel, mais progressait à grande peine et elle était encore assez loin de la berge qui donnait sur les bas-fonds de la ville. Elle n'avait pas le choix, l'eau n'était plus profonde et elle pouvait continuer à pied. Elle se décida donc à entrer dans la vase gluante jusqu'aux hanches, abandonnant la barque. Elle progressa tout en tentant de ne pas penser aux choses visqueuses qui s'accrochaient à ses vêtements.
- Ahh ! Ça ! Il me le paiera très cher ce général ! Me voilà en train d'écumer les bas-fonds de la ville ! Pesta-t-elle. Je ne vois vraiment pas ce qui pourrait m'arriver de plus fou !
Et, comme pour la contredire, elle manqua un pas et tomba de tout son long dans la mer d'immondices. Elle se releva dégoûtée et recouverte de la tête au pied de substances noirâtres.
- Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Hurla-t-elle pleine de rage.
Elle franchit enfin le minuscule ponton de bois où étaient amarrées des barques. Là, quelques hommes s'arrêtèrent de converser à son apparition. Certains affichaient des airs de pitié, d'autres de pitiés, personne ne pouvait distinguer son visage recouvert de boue, elle aurait bien pu être une vieille mendiante qu'ils n'auraient pas fait de différence. Un des hommes passa devant elle et lui lança une pièce tout en ajoutant :
- Tiens ma belle, ça c'est pour toi, au moins tu auras quelque chose à manger ce soir. C'est de bon cœur que je te donne ça, la chasse a été bonne pour moi. J'ai pu voler cette bourse à une femme aujourd'hui, dit-il en soupesant les pièces, fier de son larcin. Peut-être que tu auras cette chance demain !
Cela dit, il s'en alla en sifflotant, laissant Tulia fulminer sous son tas d'immondices. Ce n'était pas possible, il l'avait prise pour une mendiante ! Elle, l'une des plus grandes voleuses qui excelle dans cet art ! Humiliée dans son amour-propre, elle monta les escaliers en bois qui menaient à la mini cité des laissés-pour-contre, puis emprunta le dédale de pierre que connaissaient tous les habitants de cet endroit. Pourtant, un homme qu'elle avait rencontré ici lors d'une de ses excursions, lui avait confié que les habitants ne connaissaient pas tous les chemins car il semblait y en avoir des centaines, aussi se cantonnaient-ils à une partie des lieux. Les premiers habitants avaient découvert ce labyrinthe déjà installé et personne ne savait comment il s'était formé, mais Tulia se doutait que cela ne pouvait être le fait de la nature. Elle dépassa quelques habitations encastrées dans la roche dont certaines avaient relevé leurs bâches d'entrées pour laisser s'échapper la fumée du souper. Des enfants allaient et venaient entre leurs habitations et le chemin central en courant, se poursuivant avec des rires. À chaque étage, d'autres habitations s'étaient formées et la sortie qu'elle cherchait se situait tout en haut, elle donnait sur une ruelle, il fallait donc qu'elle emprunte quelques ponts en bois. Cependant, pour y arriver, elle dut encore errer dans le dédale de pierre et pour tromper son ennui, elle observa la population des alentours, vivant constamment sans la lumière du jour avec un réseau de torches accrochées tout le long des murs pour seuls éclairages. Les bougies des habitations faisaient penser à Tulia à de petites lucioles statiques. À sa droite, un autre chemin se profilait, réitérant le même décor que celui qu'elle empruntait. Elle constata, non sans étonnement que la population avait su s'adapter à cet environnement en construisant tout un réseau d'habitations troglodytes. Puis, avisant un enfant en larmes se faisant consoler par sa mère, Tulia s'immergea dans sa propre enfance. Elle ne s'était jamais connue de parents, n'était-ce pas pour cela qu'elle avait fui en fait, son village natal ? N'était-ce pas pour oublier sa solitude ? Elle ne s'était jamais attachée à qui que ce soit de peur de ressentir ensuite un sentiment d'abandon. D'ailleurs, avait-on déjà été proche d'elle ? Les rares personnes qu'elle avait côtoyées n'étaient pas forcément de bonnes fréquentations et les quelques relations qu'elle entretenaient étaient souvent opportunistes. Mais tout un chacun y trouvait finalement son compte, elle ne s’était donc jamais réellement appesantie sur la question.
Soudain, revenant à la réalité, elle se rendit compte qu'elle avait manqué un chemin, elle aurait dû prendre à gauche à un moment donné, mais elle avait avancé, tout occupée à ses pensées. Elle retourna sur ses pas mais se perdit aussitôt. Aussi, tenta-t-elle de demander son chemin, mais les personnes qu'elle croisa s'écartèrent d'elle à cause de son odeur pestilentielle et de la vase, maintenant sèche, qui lui collait au corps. Elle se fit une raison et poursuivit son chemin, elle rencontrerait sûrement une personne plus tard qui lui indiquera la sortie, se rassura-t-elle. Mais au fur et à mesure qu'elle progressait dans le dédale de granit, elle ne vit plus âme qui vive et, sachant que revenir sur ses pas était la meilleure façon de se perdre encore plus, elle emprunta un à un les chemins qu'elle sembla reconnaître jusqu'à ce qu'elle se perdît totalement. Comme pour ajouter à sa mauvaise fortune, la dernière torche qu'elle rencontra s'éteignit, la laissant dans un noir complet.
