La racine plantée germa de plus en plus. Bientôt, des tiges vertes se formèrent et des bulbes grossirent jusqu'à ce que des pétales de rose en éclosent. Les nouvelles roses fraîchement formées se tournèrent alors vers le soleil, offrant leurs beautés au ciel bleu de l'après-midi sous des yeux attentifs incandescents. Des mains se placèrent au-dessus d'elles comme pour leur insuffler une énergie nouvelle pour les aider à leur croissance.
- Fenhara ! Va me chercher de l'eau à la rivière s'il te plaît. Prends la charrette !
Déconcentrée par cette intrusion, la petite plante se flétrit brusquement et s'affaissa.
- Oh non ! S'écria Fenhara en regardant la plante s'effondrer, dépitée. J'avais presque réussi !
- Réussi quoi ma chérie ? Demanda sa mère en s'avançant vers elle avec du linge à étendre.
- Rien mère.
- ... Très bien, remplis-moi ces trois seaux s'il te plaît. Mais reviens aussitôt terminé à la maison, les routes ne sont pas trop sûres en ce moment.
- Oui mère, répondit Fenhara en se relevant du jardin, de la terre pleine sa tunique.
- Fenhara, reprit sa mère plus doucement. J'aimerais que tu t'intéresses plus à autre chose qu'à ces plantes. Tu me rends inquiète quand tu es dans cet état de concentration. Je ne veux plus que tu viennes dans ce jardin pendant un temps, comprends-tu ?
- Bien sûr...J'y vais, ajouta la jeune femme en s'en allant sous le regard soucieux de sa mère.
Fenhara sortit de la chaumière et monta dans la charrette. Elle plissa ses cheveux roux pour les enfourcher sous un chapeau de paille, efficace contre la chaleur, puis mit son cheval en branle. Elle dut contourner la chaumière pour prendre la route principale et passa devant le potager où sa mère s'occupait du linge. Elle l'observa avec affection, elle ne lui voulait que du bien et se faisait du souci pour elle, c'était normal qu'elle s'inquiète. Depuis la mort de son époux, sa mère la surprotégeait, voire l'étouffait. Faute d'avoir des amis, Fenhara s'était renfermée sur elle et était devenue d'un tempérament timide. Mais elle s'était vu développer à l'inverse de cela, un attrait irrésistible pour les plantes. En effet, elle se sentait merveilleusement bien lorsqu'elle était entourée de végétaux. Sa mère ne savait pas pourquoi elle s'y intéressait autant, mais elle, elle savait. Elle communiquait avec les plantes, elle les comprenait, elle savait ce dont elles avaient besoin, c'était même pour cela que le potager de sa mère était si productif. En un printemps, elle avait transformé ce tas de terre en un jardin merveilleusement beau. D'ailleurs, les voyageurs qui passaient par cette route s'arrêtaient souvent pour admirer les fleurs aux multiples coloris et aux formes intrigantes. Beaucoup demandaient le secret de telles œuvres, d'autres achetaient carrément des spécimens pour les rapporter avec eux. Mais elle ne pouvait pas le leur révéler, même pas à sa mère. Elle ne la comprendrait pas. D'ailleurs étant petite, elle lui avait crié qu'elle parlait aux plantes, mais cette dernière ne l'avait pas crue. Elle avait alors gardé ce secret, même le fait que depuis un certain temps, elle s'exerçait à faire pousser des plantes rien qu'avec son énergie vitale. Cela paraissait invraisemblable, mais elle avait bien failli réussir avant que sa mère ne l'interrompe plus tôt. Elle détourna les yeux de sa maison qui disparaissait derrière elle à mesure que la charrette progressait sous le soleil. Elle observa de loin la grande ville imposante qui se dressait devant elle. Elles avaient trouvé, sa mère et elle, cette chaumière à l'écart de la cité de Bourqua et avaient voulu y habiter. Parce que, premièrement, elle était située loin du bruit et de la population dense et parce que, secondement, cela arrangeait bien Fenhara car ses plantes avaient besoin d'espace pour survivre. Elle soupira et offrit son visage au soleil en souriant. La douceur de ses traits faisait ressortir de grands yeux aux teintes orangées qui détonaient avec le blanc laiteux de sa peau. De longs cheveux roux ondulés cascadaient jusqu'à ses hanches tandis qu'un visage ovale faisait ressortir sa candeur. Elle traversa doucement une rangée d'arbres qu'elle salua de la tête et en retour, plusieurs feuilles vertes se détachèrent de leurs branches pour voler à sa rencontre. Elle sourit, réjouie que la nature la compte parmi les siens. Enfin, elle entendit plus qu'elle n'aperçut la rivière ruisselante à sa gauche et y dirigea sa charrette avec les gestes sûrs d'une longue habitude, puis, arrivée au bord de la rivière, elle descendit avec ses seaux pour les remplir. Elle prit néanmoins le temps d'admirer le paysage qui s'offrait à elle ; la rivière était large et on apercevait au-delà, la grande chaîne de montagnes rocailleuse. On pouvait apercevoir son reflet dans le miroir de l'eau limpide que seules quelques barques ridaient la surface lisse. La rivière tournait à sa droite pour continuer son affluent vers la ville qui se tenait à présent dans son dos. Bourqua s'était construite près des chutes de la rivière et avait l'accès à un port donnant sur la mer. Cette position stratégique permettait de mettre en difficulté d'éventuels envahisseurs qui se heurteraient à la chaîne de montagnes sur laquelle elle était construite. Fenhara arrêta sa contemplation et entreprit ensuite de remplir ses seaux, mais toute concentrée à sa tâche, elle ne s'aperçut pas du cliquetis, tout d'abord minime, qui troublait la surface de l'eau à quelques brasses d'elle, à sa gauche et qui devenait de plus en plus insistant. Ce ne fut seulement que lorsqu'il se transforma en une sorte d'ébullition que Fenhara releva la tête, alertée, un seau en main. C'était étrange, ce bouillonnement s'intensifiait de plus en plus, mais pourtant, aucune chaleur ne se dégageait de la rivière. Il n'y avait pas, à sa connaissance, de volcan marin, alors qu'est-ce que cela pouvait bien-être ? Se demanda-t-elle, intriguée par cette étrangeté. Et le bruit qui accompagnait ce phénomène devenait de plus en plus inquiétant pour Fenhara qui regarda nerveusement autour d'elle, afin de s’assurer qu’elle obtiendrait de l'aide au cas où cela s'avérerait dangereux. Mais aucun voyageur ne passait sur la route et les barques, qui glissaient sur l'eau il y a peu de temps, s'étaient toutes éloignées. Peut-être devrait-elle faire de même ? Hésita-t-elle, en se mordant la lèvre inférieure. Mais la curiosité l'emporta. Intriguée par cette étrangeté, elle entreprit de s'avancer alors doucement dans la rivière en relevant sa robe. Cependant, à peine fit-elle quelques pas dans l’eau qu'un homme jaillit subitement du bouillonnement en un bond spectaculaire qui le propulsa dans les airs avant de retomber brutalement sur la berge.
Fenhara retint à grande peine un cri de terreur et courut vers sa charrette. Elle s'apprêtait à lancer au galop son cheval sans demander son reste lorsque l'inconnu l'interpella d'une voix affaiblie :
- S'il vous plaît... Aidez-moi, supplia-t-il dans un souffle.
Fenhara le regarda avec des yeux ronds avant de comprendre ce qu'il lui demandait. L'individu était à genoux et semblait lutter pour se relever. Il tenait dans sa main un tissu mouillé parsemé de fils d'or et enroulé en forme de boule. Ses cheveux noirs et mouillés lui collaient au cou et son torse dénudé laissait entrevoir une profonde entaille à la hanche. Que faisait-il dans l'eau ? Elle avait beau se souvenir, elle n'avait vu personne y nager et puis d'abord comment aurait-il fait avec une blessure pareille ? Et puis cet homme ne semblait pas être de la région de Bourqua, constata-t-elle en avisant ses vêtements. En effet, il portait une culotte noire moulante surmontée de jambières et de souliers en argent. Des canons d'avant-bras de la même matière étaient ornés de motifs d'or inconnus. L'homme paraissait tellement désespéré que Fenhara n'eût pas le cœur à l'abandonner et elle se décida finalement à s'approcher pour lui prêter son épaule et le soutenir. Elle l'aida à s'installer dans sa charrette, puis prit la direction de sa chaumière en mettant son cheval au galop, il n’y avait pas de temps à perdre.
- Ne vous inquiétez pas, le rassura-t-elle en se retournant, je vais vous emmener chez moi, ma mère et moi saurons vous soignez !
L'homme qui s'était allongé se redressa au prix d'un terrible effort qui lui arracha une grimace :
- Non, s'il vous plaît... Bourqua...
- Quoi ? Mais nous sommes plus proches de chez moi ! Il faut qu'on vous soigne.
Le vent lui sifflait les oreilles à cause de la vitesse qu'elle infligeait à son cheval et elle devait crier pour se faire entendre.
- Dirigez-vous vers Bourqua s'il vous plaît !
Fenhara ne savait plus quoi faire, devait-elle écouter les délires d'un malade ? Puis en le voyant se retourner de temps en temps derrière lui pour vérifier que personne ne les suivait, elle sut que l'homme avait de graves ennuis. Elle vit tellement la terreur imprégnée sur son visage qu'elle n'hésita plus une seconde et changea subitement de direction pour mettre le cap sur Bourqua. Quelques instants plus tard, elle vit au loin la route qui reliait le port à la ville apparaître devant elle et se posa maintenant la question de savoir ce qu'il comptait espérer trouver ou faire à Bourqua, car elle, ne connaissait ni guérisseur ni personne d'ailleurs susceptible de les aider. Puis Fenhara se résolut à aller trouver la milice locale qui, elle, saurait régler le cas. Cependant, elle n'eut pas le temps de mettre son plan à exécution car l'inconnu se releva encore une fois et elle s'en alarma ; il avait le teint fiévreux et les yeux creux, il semblait avoir du mal à respirer, mais il put, néanmoins, lui indiquer une nouvelle direction :
- Non, pas par le port... Dirigez-vous vers la montagne sur laquelle est située la ville...
- Mais il n'y a pas de chemin par-là ! La seule route pour se rendre à Bourqua est celle qui va du port à la ville ! S'exclama-t-elle.
L'homme avait du mal à parler et il le faisait par intermittence.
- Faites... Ce que je vous dis, s'il vous plaît...
Puis il se retourna encore une fois et elle vit à ce moment de l'effroi dans ses yeux. Se demandant ce qui pouvait tant l'effrayer, elle se risqua à suivre son regard pour voir au loin de la poussière... Soulevée par des chevaux, dirait-on.
- Mon Dieu ! Souffla-t-elle.
Elle n'arrivait pas encore à distinguer les assaillants mais elle savait qu'ils les poursuivaient. Qui était cet homme ? Pourquoi lui en voulait-on ? Qu'allait-il advenir de lui s'ils lui mettaient la main dessus ? Elle n'avait jamais été témoin de violence, elle détestait cela. Puis, oubliant ces pensées, une question essentielle survint alors à son esprit ; s'ils rattrapaient cet homme, que feraient-ils d'elle ? Mon Dieu ! Pensa-t-elle encore avant de claquer un peu plus les rênes, donnant ainsi la nouvelle direction indiquée par l'homme au cheval. Mais ce dernier n'étant ni de prime jeunesse ni de course, ce fut donc avec horreur que les deux occupants de la charrette virent leurs ennemis se rapprocher dangereusement. Néanmoins, ils purent atteindre le pied de la montagne et ils descendirent de la carriole aussi rapidement qu'ils le pouvaient.
- Et maintenant ? Que faisons-nous ? Il n'y a que de la pierre ici, pas de chemin ! Nous aurions dû passer par le port ! S'écria-t-elle au bord des larmes.
L'homme s'approcha de la paroi en titubant et la tâta avant de se retourner vers elle pour lui demander faiblement :
- Venez m'aider s'il vous plaît, il faut chercher un passage, il y en un... Nous devons trouver le mécanisme afin d'activer l'ouverture de l'entrée !
Fenhara regarda derrière elle, les poursuivants seraient bientôt sur eux, ce n'était plus qu'une question de temps, elle ne pouvait plus rebrousser chemin. Elle se hâta donc vers la paroi pour la tâter frénétiquement et lorsqu'elle fut sur le point d'abandonner tout espoir, sa main s'enfonça dans la roche et une partie de la paroi s'écarta dans un grincement rocheux. Elle l'avait trouvé ! Ne perdant pas plus de temps à réfléchir, elle s'engouffra dans l'entrée avec son protégé qui se tenait difficilement sur ses jambes. À peine furent-ils entrés que la porte se referma derrière eux, car en fait, de l'intérieur, c'était bel et bien une gigantesque porte dorée qui s'était activée. Fenhara n'avait jamais rien vu de semblable. L'endroit où ils se tenaient donnait sur un grand espace circulaire crée dans la roche. Le sable jonchait le sol et des torches ornaient les parois. Au bout de cette salle improvisée, un passage sombre.
- Il faut bloquer la porte, souffla le blessé, l'arrachant ainsi à sa contemplation. Elle cédera, mais ça les retiendra assez longtemps pour qu'on ait de l'avance sur eux... Enlevez le disque en or à gauche de la porte, il la bloquera.
Sans réfléchir, Fenhara se précipita sur un gros disque plaqué contre le mur et le tourna de façon à le dévisser de la paroi, puis le laissa tomber lourdement à cause de son poids en or. Elle se saisit ensuite d'une torche au mur et se remit en position pour soutenir son compagnon avant de se diriger vers le passage. Au fur et à mesure qu'ils avançaient, le froid s'intensifiait et le silence, entrecoupé par la respiration haletante du blessé devenait oppressant. Elle en profita donc pour poser les questions qui lui brûlaient les lèvres depuis leur rencontre :
- Qui êtes-vous donc ? Pourquoi vous pourchasse-t-on ?
Ils arrivèrent à un croisement de chemin et l'homme la dirigea vers l'un d'eux.
- Savez-vous seulement où nous allons ? Insista-t-elle.
- Je m'appelle Niyak, je suis un homme... De Véa...
Il n'arrivait plus à parler car la marche épuisait toutes ses forces, d'ailleurs, il se traînait plus qu'il ne marchait et Fenhara avait du mal à le soutenir. Il devenait de plus en plus lourd et elle s'en inquiéta, car d'abord, il devenait blême et puis elle ne savait pas du tout où elle était, il était le seul à savoir où ils se dirigeaient. Aussi s'arrêta-t-elle de lui poser des questions en attendant qu'il puisse reprendre des forces. Tandis qu'ils évoluaient dans le dédale de couloirs, elle eut vaguement conscience que le chemin qu'ils avaient emprunté s'inclinait légèrement en pente descendante, où allaient-ils donc ? Ils progressèrent ainsi pendant un bon moment lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à un second croisement en cercle où quatre autres chemins se présentaient à eux. Là, épuisé par la blessure où le sang se répandait à flots, l'homme s'effondra de tout son long sur le sable, entraînant Fenhara.
- Non, non ! S'il vous plaît, pas maintenant ! Nous n'en sommes pas encore sortis, s'il vous plaît ! Implora-t-elle.
L'énigmatique personnage releva un peu la tête et, sachant sa mort proche, lui tendit le tissu taché de sang qu'il tenait enroulé près de lui :
- Prenez ceci, s'il vous plaît, protégez-le... Les Témérites... Trouvez Bradis...
Mais il ne put en dire plus car les mots se transformèrent en un gargouillis incompréhensible. Il eut juste le temps de pointer un chemin du doigt avant de fermer les yeux à jamais dans un sourire triste. C'était un sourire de désespoir, un sourire d'échec, il avait failli à sa mission et maintenant, le destin de toute la Communauté était dans les mains d'une étrangère qui ne survivra probablement pas assez longtemps pour porter le message qu'il avait tenté de transmettre. Que l'Essence les garde tous...
Fenhara était désemparée. C'était bien la première fois qu'elle se retrouvait littéralement abandonnée à elle-même car il y avait toujours eu sa mère à ses côtés jusqu'à présent. Elle se tenait là, toute seule, agenouillée au-dessus du corps d'un malheureux, brandissant la torche d'une main. Heureusement qu'il lui avait quand même indiqué la voie à suivre, mais qu'avait-il essayé de lui dire ? Qu'étaient-ce les Témérites ? Une ville ? Et pourquoi voulait-il absolument qu'elle prenne avec elle ce tissu ? Elle le ramassa et voulut le déplier lorsque des pas se firent entendre. Les poursuivants ! Elle les avait complètement oubliés, ils avaient dû ouvrir la porte ! Qu'allait-elle faire maintenant ? Elle ne pouvait plus s'enfuir, ils la rattraperaient très facilement ! Tétanisée, Fenhara ne pouvait plus esquisser un mouvement, les yeux agrandis par la peur, elle vit la lueur d'un flambeau qui se déplaçait très vite dans l'un des tunnels, mais elle se rendit compte qu'il y avait encore d'autres personnes qui se rapprochaient, car elle entendit courir en même temps. Elle était au bord de l'évanouissement lorsqu'elle vit déboucher simultanément, de deux chemins différents, deux femmes. Étaient-ce leurs poursuivants ? Non, ce n'était pas possible. D'ailleurs, elles n'étaient pas arrivées par le même chemin qu'elle avait emprunté quelques instants plus tôt avec Niyak. Toutes les trois se dévisagèrent longuement avant que celle, munie aussi d'une torche, n’avisât le corps étendu par terre, imitée tout de suite par (une femme âgée ?) l'autre inconnue complètement recouverte de boue et qui dégageait une odeur nauséabonde. Le regard des deux nouvelles arrivantes passa du corps étendu à Fenhara et de Fenhara au corps étendu. Niyak ! Elle l'avait complètement oublié ! Qu'allaient-elles donc croire ? Qu'elle l'avait tué ?! Tout portait à le penser ! Il fallait absolument qu'elle se justifie, elles allaient sûrement lui demander des comptes ! Suant à grosses gouttes, Fenhara s'apprêta à fournir des explications d'une voix tremblante lorsque la première femme, munie d'une torche, se racla la gorge et demanda le plus simplement qu'elle le pût :
- Heu... Pourriez-vous m'indiquer la sortie s'il vous plaît ?
