Tulia inspira. Elle ne s’était jamais retrouvée dans ce genre de situation. Ressentir ce sentiment désagréable d’être prise au piège et impuissante. Elle qui aimait les aventures, elle qui aimait parcourir les distances… Elle qui trouvait toujours des échappatoires à ses déboires. La découverte surréaliste de cette communauté l’avait enthousiasmée au début, même si ses expériences de la vie lui invitaient à une certaine prudence en toute chose. Mais avec la déclaration d’Atenis, un poids semblait maintenant peser sur son cœur.
- Que veux-tu dire par là ? Finit-elle par lui demander.
- Dès le début, notre rencontre m’avait paru étrange. Une rencontre dans ce labyrinthe, surtout à un endroit isolé où nous aurions bien pu nous perdre dans d’autres chemins. Le reste de squelette que j’y avais croisé m’indiquait réellement qu’il s’agissait d’un vaste réseau tentaculaire dont il était difficile d’en sortir. Quelles étaient réellement les probabilités que nous nous y croisions ? Et en même temps ? Commença Atenis calmement.
C’était bien la première fois que Tulia et Fenhara l’observait être aussi calme, cela en devenait presque dérangeant. C’était celle des trois qui avait été la plus logique depuis leur rencontre, mais il y avait toujours cet air de suffisance surfaite qui cassait son image de maturité qu’elle souhaitait présenter. Toujours une remarque piquante ou un sourire en coin qui démontraient qu’elle était le genre de personne qui affichait des airs sérieux à l’extérieur, mais qui, à l’intérieur… Était une véritable peste ! Cependant, les deux amies constatèrent présentement un changement dans son attitude. Elle semblait être plongée dans une profonde réflexion, donnant ainsi un sentiment de gravité à la situation dans laquelle elles se trouvaient et Fenhara en frissonna. Cela… Ne pouvait pas être si grave, si ?
- La coïncidence a encore voulu que nous soyons témoins de l’un des problèmes les plus importants concernant cette communauté et qui remet en jeu leur sort ; le vol de la main, poursuivit-elle en croisant les siens. Outre cet événement, nous apprenons que la cérémonie censée pérenniser ladite Communauté se tiendra dans cinq lunes. Quelle est l’utilité de nouveaux arrivants avant une possible catastrophe ? Si, comme ils semblent l’affirmer, ce fabuleux Être a programmé l’arrivée des membres pour constituer cette assemblée, il est très difficile de ne pas se questionner sur notre arrivée après une aussi longue période sans nouveaux membres et juste avant cette cérémonie…
Atenis inspira et s’adossa à sa chaise avec lassitude avant de lever ses yeux comme si elle s’absorbait dans ses souvenirs.
- Mon père m’a enseigné le métier de commerce et l’une des qualités que devrait avoir un marchand est d’être à l’écoute des changements. Savoir observer les évolutions, faire des rapprochements entre plusieurs situations afin d’anticiper les évolutions et maintenir ainsi son commerce. Dans notre cas, bien entendu, il ne s’agit pas de commerce mais nous avons des coïncidences qui, au final, s’avèrent n’en pas être.
- Tu veux dire qu’il y a une raison spécifique à notre arrivée et que cette raison est liée à la main ? Demanda Fenhara, comprenant la logique d’Atenis.
- Mais pourquoi nous ? Répondit Tulia à la place d’Atenis. Qu’avons-nous de plus qui nous démarquerait de leurs expériences ?? Enfin, je veux dire, ces gens vivent dans leur monde depuis bien plus longtemps que nous, qu’avons-nous de plus à leur apporter ? S’agaça Tulia à la pensée que le destin tentait de leur imposer une hypothétique mission. Elle en était totalement opposée !
- Je ne saurais réellement le dire, avoua Atenis. Toujours est-il que j’ai de plus en plus cette impression que je ne ressentais pas auparavant. Comme un poids qui pèse dans mon cœur. Il y a ce sentiment désagréable que quelque chose est…
- … Caché, termina Tulia en la fixant droit dans les yeux.
Exactement le même sentiment que la jeune blonde ressentait. C’était incroyable, mais aussi effrayant. Effrayant de savoir qu’il y avait un élément ou une situation qu’elles ne pouvaient pas réellement définir, mais qui dégageait une sensation d’oppression, comme… Quelque chose tapie dans l’ombre qui épiait.
Atenis lui rendit son regard. Cela ne la surprenait plus que Tulia terminât ses phrases, mais cela confirmait aussi qu’elle n’était pas la seule à le ressentir. Elle s’en sentit soulagée, soulagée aussi parce qu’elle pouvait leur raconter son rêve déroutant sans qu’aucune ne la prenne comme étant dérangée. Et c’est ce qu’elle fit.
Ce fut Fenhara qui reprit la parole après la fin du récit d’Atenis tout en entreprenant d’examiner ses paumes.
- Je sais que certaines décoctions peuvent avoir des effets hallucinogènes. Je ne suis pas une guérisseuse comme Aliam, mais j’ai la connaissance des plantes et je faisais souvent des décoctions pour ma mère quand elle avait des maux. Cela semblait très bien marcher, elle en était ravie et avait entrepris d’en vendre quelques-unes aux voyageurs qui passaient par notre habitat et qui nous achetaient des fleurs. Je pourrais voir si je ne peux pas trouver d’autres remèdes qui te conviendraient mieux que ceux de la Communauté ?
- Bonne idée ! Approuva Tulia.
Fenhara avait, en effet, une affinité avec les plantes. Qui mieux qu’elle pouvait trouver les bons breuvages à des cas plus particuliers ?
- Mais il reste quand même curieux que ces potions t’aient fait vivre cette expérience aussi vivement, reprit Tulia. Et ce qui m’inquiète le plus, c’est qu’Aliam semblait penser que ce serait un frein pour boire l’eau de cette Essence. Je ne comprends pas le rapport entre ton intolérance et cette eau… Il ne devrait pas y avoir de corrélation, il ne s’agit pas des mêmes substances… Chez les unes, ce sont des potions à base de plantes, chez l’autre, c’est une substance « divine », finit Tulia en accentuant le mot par la gestuelle imitant des guillemets.
Le raisonnement de Tulia était correct. Pourquoi l’un empêcherait de consommer l’eau de la source ? Non pas qu’Atenis souhaitât en boire, mais il était vrai que, logiquement, il ne devrait pas y avoir de corrélation ?
-… Et si justement les potions que j’ai ingurgitées hier n’étaient pas faites à base de plante… ? Souleva Atenis, suspicieuse tout d’un coup. C’est vrai quoi, je ne sais pas réellement ce que j’ai bu…
-… Mais alors, qui nous garantit que l’eau de l’Essence que nous sommes censées boire, Tulia et moi dans trois jours, n’aura pas les mêmes effets négatifs sur nous ? Intervint Fenhara à son tour.
Il eut un silence de réalisation après cette déclaration où Atenis se massa les temples tandis que Tulia posait ses mains sur la tête en signe de désespoir et que Fenhara se mordait la lèvre. Les implications qu’engendrait la consommation de cette eau de l’Essence devenaient de plus en plus perturbantes. Il y avait beaucoup trop d’incertitudes concernant cette Communauté et dans leur procédé d’intégration pour qu’elles acceptent leur sort sans comprendre ce qui pourrait leur arriver.
Ce fut après ce moment de réflexion qu’Atenis fit soudainement sursauter tout le monde en tapant dans ses mains.
- Bien !! Nous devons savoir ce qu’il y a dans toutes ces… Substances visqueuses, dit-elle en accompagnant sa grimace de dégoût d’un geste désignant des objets fictifs. Le but est de savoir ce que nous ingérons et pourquoi cela m’est répulsif et si ces breuvages peuvent avoir les mêmes effets sur vous. S’ils souhaitent nous obliger à boire cette chose, il faudra avant tout vérifier que ce ne soit pas dangereux pour nous. Et puis, c’est peut-être notre chance…
- Tu veux dire que s’il s’avère que nous rejetons tous ces breuvages nous n’auront pas à boire cette source ? Déduisit Fenhara qui commençait de mieux en mieux à comprendre les intentions d’Atenis.
Cette dernière sourit d’un air de conspiratrice avec un arrière-fond de vice… Comme cet air leur paraissait familier et plus en correspondance avec sa personnalité ! Tulia s’en soulagea mais s’en lamenta par la même occasion, car elle se rendait compte qu’elle préférait une Atenis abusive avec ses remarques sarcastiques et cassantes qu’une Atenis emprunte d’une profonde réflexion. Avec le retour de son humeur, c’était comme s’il y avait encore de l’espoir. Une échappatoire. Elles n’étaient pas totalement bloquées… Elles allaient se mettre en action et lutter !
- Je pourrais étudier ce qu’il y a dans ces potions… Je ne suis pas sûre de tout connaître, mais je pourrais identifier facilement les plantes s’il y en a. Il me faudrait la liste des ingrédients utilisés pour les potions pour cela, reprit Fenhara.
- Je vais m’en charger, répondit Atenis. Je les demanderai à Aliam ou je les récupérerai de manière plus subtile. Mais je ne sais pas où nous pouvons avoir un échantillon de cette eau de l’Essence… Je pourrais lui poser la question par la même occasion, peut-être ?
- Je sais où se trouve l’eau de la source, sourit Fenhara. C’est ce que je voulais vous confier dans la salle d’entraînement, hier. J’ai pu visiter la cité des « honorables » et ai pu voir de loin le lieu où était entreposée cette eau, mais il est extrêmement bien gardé. Je ne suis pas sûre que l’on pourra y entrer, même pour le visiter.
- Mais il faudra pourtant trouver un moyen avant trois jours. Fenhara, pourras-tu te renseigner ? Tu sembles avoir bien repéré les lieux… Remarqua Atenis, admirative que son amie ait pu se faufiler et approcher d’aussi près certains endroits sécurisés en si peu de temps.
Fenhara sourit et rejeta exagérément ses cheveux en arrière d’un geste crâneur.
- Voilà à quoi ça sert d’être agréable avec les gens. On n’obtient généralement pas grand-chose avec des cris, de la force et en se moquant des autres… Je vais voir ce que je peux faire…
C’était une accusation déguisée à l’intention des deux rebelles et Tulia en émit un petit rire. Sa voix cristalline eut pour conséquence le relâchement de la tension qu’elles ressentaient toutes depuis ce matin. La jeune femme blonde intervint ensuite :
- Bon, le but est de ne pas boire la source, certes, mais aussi de filer d’ici. Je me fiche de savoir s’il y a une raison à notre arrivée, nous devons nous éloigner de cette communauté. Et s’il s’avère, oui, je sais… S’il s’avère que nous avons une quelconque mission, nous pouvons très bien y réfléchir en étant à mille lieux d’ici… Répondit rapidement Tulia en avance à l’objection qu’Atenis tentait de lui formuler en levant les mains.
- Le souci, c’est que nous sommes formées et suivies par Ejas jusqu’à notre intégration complète aux Témérites, ajouta Atenis. Il va nous coller comme un bouton aux fesses, celui-là.
- Il ne sera pas tout le temps avec nous, reprit Tulia avec son air espiègle et un arrière-fond de vice, tout aussi familier aux deux autres compères.
Vraiment, pensa Fenhara, il n’y avait rien à en tirer de ses deux amies. Des aimants à problèmes en toute situation !
- N’oubliez pas que je vais maintenant être entraînée pour être intégrée à la garde de Sérek, compléta la jeune femme blonde. Je ne pense pas que je serai suivie par le Second, il a une position qui ne lui permet pas de s’occuper de tout le monde… Et je n’aurais pas forcément Ejas tout le temps sur le dos lors de mes entraînements qui seront susceptibles de se poursuivent en dehors de ces murs…
-…Et tu auras l’occasion de repérer les sorties, poursuivit Atenis. Comprendre comment marchent ces fameux passages, et même apprendre à déjouer l’attention des gardes le moment venu, héhéhé…

L’une, toute dents sorties, se frottait déjà les mains comme si elle allait se remplir les poches, l’autre, le sourire du démon aux lèvres comme si elle jubilait par avance à l’idée de piéger un lapin dans un trou. Cela se transforma en une compétition de ricanement qui prit en volume à mesure qu’elles échafaudaient des plans boiteux dans leurs têtes… Vraiment, rien à en tirer, pensa Fenhara en secouant la sienne.
- Bien, récapitulons mesdames. Fenhara, s’occupera des potions, Tulia de repérer les sorties pour notre future fuite, et comme je serai celle qui échappera entièrement à la vigilance d’Ejas à cause de mon état, je pourrai aller rechercher plus de renseignements sur cette cérémonie qui se tiendra dans cinq lunes. Je veux être sûre des implications qu’elle engendrerait sur nos vies, quelles en sont réellement les risques.
- Bonne idée, cela ne servirait à rien de courir, en effet, si la marée nous rattrape, approuva Tulia en hochant la tête, les bras croisés.
- Fenhara, je te communiquerai les ingrédients à ton retour. Puisque nous serons séparées, regroupons-nous ici ce soir pour échanger nos informations avant que vous ne regagniez vos logis.
- Hmm, acquiesça Fenhara… Et je vais envoyer un message à ma mère qui doit être totalement morte d’inquiétude.
Cela faisait maintenant deux jours qu’elle avait disparu. Fenhara savait que sa mère devait la rechercher désespérément et elle s’en inquiétait. Elle culpabilisait que les circonstances l’aient éloigné de sa maison et qu’elle ne pouvait pas la rassurer personnellement. Elle allait devoir lui envoyer un effet personnel pour lui prouver qu’elle était réellement en vie et si cela ne suffisait pas… Elle n’aurait peut-être pas d’autres choix que de boire l’eau de l’Essence afin de sortir de la cité, même si cette eau pouvait potentiellement lui être dangereuse… Elle aurait certainement à faire des choix, c’était une situation assez compliquée pour elle.
La dernière remarque de Fenhara rappela Atenis aussi à l’ordre. Elle était sûre que son père était toujours à quai avec son bateau, inquiet, mais bouillonnant silencieusement de fureur à l’intérieur. Elle ne souhaitait vraiment pas y penser. Avoir disparu ainsi – et n’avoir pas su respecter la consigne de ne pas s’éloigner, ça, c’était à passer sous silence – sans avoir laissé de message était impardonnable. Si un jour elle parvenait à revenir, il allait réellement falloir qu’elle trouve une manière d’éviter le courroux de ses parents qui serait long à apaiser… Tch. Elle s’était mise toute seule dans les problèmes. Une lettre plus que convaincante devait parvenir à son père, mais elle ne savait pas ce qu’elle allait bien pouvoir lui raconter, Atenis en était anxieuse. Il était vraiment étonnant qu’elle fût capable de témérité devant une horde d’animaux pour défendre sa vie, mais qu’elle perdît ses moyens à la perspective d’une confrontation avec son père. Cela lui paraissait être un défi au-delà de ses compétences. Le vieux commerçant serait même susceptible de jeter le messager qui lui apporterait sa lettre à la mer et s’assurer qu’il ne remonte pas à la surface…
- !!! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH !!!
Tulia et Fenhara sursautèrent de surprise à cause de l’éclat de rire subite d’Atenis. Cette dernière se tenait la tête en riant, elle avait l’apparence d’une démente et Fenhara s’en inquiéta sérieusement.
- Atenis, ça va ? S’approcha-t-elle pour la tâter afin d’apaiser un possible début de folie.
Elle était vraiment inquiète. Toute cette situation avait-elle eu un impact sur la santé mentale de son amie ? Les potions n’avaient-elles été, au final, que des signaux d’alerte d’un potentiel problème dans son corps et sa tête ? Fenhara se mordit la lèvre, il pouvait advenir que les personnes à l’apparence plus posées étaient celles qui intériorisaient le plus les difficultés et étaient susceptibles de les expulser de manière totalement incontrôlée. Vraiment, il fallait qu’Aliam la suive au mieux, elle ne pouvait pas supporter que son amie souffre intérieurement sans qu’elle ne puisse l’aider…
- Atenis… Reprit-t-elle, doucement.
Sa compagne se calma enfin et les regarda avec… Un sourire vicieux et Fenhara se raidit. Elle avait un mauvais pressentiment qui se confirma lorsqu’elle entendit Atenis déclarer d’une voix douce :
- Il s’avère que moi aussi je dois envoyer un message à mon père. C’est compliqué, il n’est pas le genre de personne à accepter les fausses explications sauf… Si je lui avoue que j’ai rencontré quelqu’un à qui j’ai donné mon cœur. Je lui dirai que par peur de son refus, parce que la personne que j’aime n’est ni un marin, ni un commerçant, je me suis enfuie pour qu’il réalise l’importance de cet homme dans ma vie et qu’il devra considérer sérieusement mon choix.
Elle se leva doucement et déambula dans la pièce nonchalamment en passant ses doigts délicatement sur la table en bois d’ébène, puis elle sourit d’une manière sinistre qui fit vraiment froid au dos de Fenhara.
- J’aurai ainsi décidé de partir quelques jours afin de laisser à mon père le temps de s’habituer à ma décision, élabora-t-elle.
Puis, elle se retourna vers ses amies et compléta, l’air pensive, comme si elle exprimait une pensée à voix haute :
- Au mieux, il croira ces mensonges, au pire, il pensera que j’ai disparu pour explorer la contrée et satisfaire ma curiosité. Il en a l’habitude avec moi, ce sera une énième rébellion pour lui, certes grave, mais peut-être moins improbable que l’histoire du partenaire…
Elle soupira et joignit ses mains derrière son dos avant de se retourner de nouveau avec, derrière elle, ses deux amis qui avaient des difficultés à suivre le cours de ses pensées.
- Je préciserai dans ma correspondance que ce sera mon aimé qui lui apportera la lettre afin qu’ils se familiarisent ensemble lors de cette première rencontre. Au mieux, encore une fois, il pensera que cette personne est véritablement mon amant, au pire, il pensera que c’est le complice de mon escapade. Quoi qu’il en soit, cet homme sera le sacrifice qui permettra à mon père de déverser un peu de sa colère… Ahh. Ejas, Ejas. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi d’être un « messager », demanda-t-elle de manière théâtrale en faisant face à la fenêtre.
Fenhara était livide tandis que Tulia riait à gorge déployée tout en conseillant d’ajouter telle ou telle précision dans le message…
Vraiment, rien à en tirer.
