Atenis serrait la mâchoire et Fenhara était sûre qu'elle avait définitivement Sérek dans le mauvais œil. Quant à Tulia, la menace de Rohl semblait sonner comme un défi. C'était le genre de personnage qui était stimulé lorsqu'il y avait des interdits. Les règles ? Elle n'en connaissait pas. Parce que tout simplement, si on lui interdisait l'accès à une pièce, par exemple, c’était parce qu'il devait y avoir une quelconque richesse dedans, pourquoi ne pas alors aller vérifier ?
Fenhara hésita à parler car il lui semblait voir des nuages noirs se former au-dessus de la tête de ses compagnes et elle s'en inquiéta.
Soudain, elles entendirent un raclement de gorge derrière elles et elles se retournèrent toutes en même temps. Sur le pas de la porte, se trouvait un jeune homme en uniforme avec des yeux d’un intense noir, presque hypnotiques, remarqua Fenhara. Des cheveux noirs et courts complétaient un visage qui se voulait strict, mais un peu surfait à son avis. Il adoptait une posture droite comme un "i", les mains derrière le dos et son apparence était tellement impeccable qu'il n'y avait aucun faux pli dans sa tenue. La jeune femme fut soulagée de cette intervention, elle n'avait plus besoin de chercher à alléger la mauvaise humeur de ses compagnes. Mais son soulagement fut de courte durée lorsqu'elle avisa des yeux mauvais se tourner vers le nouveau venu. Elle ferma les siens et pria silencieusement pour le messager, car elle savait, oui elle savait, que ce serait lui qui allait payer pour leur humiliation. Qu'elles étaient mesquines !
Le jeune homme prit soudainement la parole d'une voix sûre et grave :
- Bonjour, je me présente, je me prénomme Ejas. J'occupe habituellement le poste de messager, mais pour aujourd'hui, on m'a chargé de vous accompagner dans vos premiers pas. Nous allons visiter tout notre territoire pendant cette journée et je vous expliquerai en même temps notre histoire en détail.
- Et si nous ne sommes pas intéressées ? Demanda Atenis nonchalamment.
Interloqué par cette déclaration, Ejas lui répondit d'une voix outrée :
- Mais... ?! Pourquoi voudriez-vous vous en aller ?! Vous n'y pensez pas ! La Communauté est la chose la plus noble qui ne vous soit jamais arrivée, vous lui faites injure en la traitant ainsi ! C'est un privilège que d'avoir été choisi pour participer au grand œuvre...
- Ehh doucement, intervint Tulia en levant ses mains en signe d'apaisement.
Elle avait constaté qu'il devenait rouge d'indignation et elle afficha un sourire en coin à l'adresse d'Atenis, mais le regard de Fenhara les dissuada de céder à l'hilarité.
Atenis le dévisagea néanmoins. Il n'y avait pas de mal à visiter les lieux, apparemment, elles étaient libres de rester ou de partir. Qu'à cela ne tienne, avant de s’échapper de cet endroit, elles pouvaient très bien en apprendre un peu plus sur cette mystérieuse Communauté. Sans vouloir l'avouer, elles étaient quand même extrêmement curieuses car, si ces gens étaient capables de construire de vastes réseaux par-delà les contrées sans être remarqués, c'était que leur assemblée n'était pas aussi simple. Chacune avait ses propres motivations et Atenis réfléchissait sur les conséquences d'une population entièrement dissimulée et dont les autorités ne semblaient pas avoir connaissance. Avec les tensions entre les pays, le pacte de paix signé semblait déjà être fragilisé, qu’était-ce encore que cette communauté dotée de machines étranges ? Même si elle ne souhaitait pas s'enfoncer dans les délires présentés pas ces gens, en tant que marchande, elle se devait d'avoir des informations sur la situation politique du pays avec lequel son village commerçait. Il était important de sécuriser les approvisionnements… La jeune femme inspira et décida de récolter les informations nécessaires et fit un signe à Tulia qui semblait tout aussi curieuse qu'elle. Il n'allait jamais être trop tard pour s'en aller par la suite…
- ... On vous suit, contez-nous votre... Notre fabuleuse histoire, reprit Tulia en plaçant une main dans le dos d'Ejas pour l'inciter à commencer sa visite.
Un peu plus détendu, le messager reprit son air guindé et expliqua :
- Nous allons visiter toutes nos installations de l'intérieur et de l'extérieur.
Il guida alors la petite troupe à travers les couloirs et ils se fondèrent dans la masse des membres de la Communauté qui affluaient dans les grandes places circulaires. Le messager commença par leur montrer les différents endroits de la cité et comment se servir des élévateurs et autres objets, mais il ne s'était sûrement pas attendu à avoir des auditrices aussi dissipées ! Dès lors qu'il leur avait montré le fonctionnement des témeos, ces objets volants avec lesquels ils se déplaçaient d'un endroit à un autre rapidement, elles s'étaient éloignées, accélérant leurs engins, rasant de près des promeneurs ou s'élevant très haut alors que cela n'était pas conseillé dans l'enceinte ! Il avait du mal à les contenir et encore moins à les regrouper. Il s'époumonait à crier leurs noms, à croire qu'elles faisaient exprès de le rendre fou, surtout celles qui se prénommaient Atenis et Tulia ! Elles le faisaient tellement courir - et voler - qu'il finit par s'asseoir sur un banc, attendant qu’elles aient terminé leurs escapades.
Tulia ressentait une sensation euphorisante. À croire qu'elle avait été faite pour cet engin, elle avait appris à le manier très facilement, en tout cas plus facilement que Fenhara. Elle rejoignit Atenis qui s'était arrêtée à plusieurs coudées du sol et observait la cité à travers un mur de verre. Elle avait passé assez de temps avec ses deux autres compagnes pour se sentir en confiance et l'aventure qu'elles avaient vécue ensemble avait favorisé une certaine intimité. D'autant qu'être présentes dans une communauté dont elles ne se sentaient pas appartenir, renforçait les liens entre les trois jeunes femmes. Tulia était surprise par la relation qu'elle avait développée avec Atenis, elles paraissaient se comprendre sans avoir à trop se parler. Atenis était perspicace et devinait parfaitement ses intentions. La jeune femme blonde n'était pas le genre de personne à placer sa confiance facilement en des personnes inconnues et elle se demandait bien pourquoi elle avait suivi ces deux femmes. Elle était une solitaire, elle aurait très bien pu se séparer d'elles et continuer son chemin sans se préoccuper de qui que ce soit lorsqu'elles étaient dans la forêt de Bourqua. Certes « l'union fait la force », surtout lorsqu'on était en situation de danger, mais ce n'était pas comme si elle n'avait jamais rencontré des situations périlleuses auparavant. La vie qu'elle avait vécu enfant avait eu son lot quotidien de risques. Non. Il y avait réellement cette compréhension sans avoir à communiquer verbalement et, même si Atenis n'hésitait pas à se montrer cassante dans ses paroles, elle ne manquait néanmoins pas de tact et évitait les sujets qui pouvaient être durs à aborder. Tulia l'avait constaté dans la forêt tandis qu'elle répondait à Fenhara sur son passé. Elle n'était pas dupe, Atenis avait redirigé la conversation adroitement pour éviter que Fenhara ne creuse un peu plus sur son enfance, car certaines blessures étaient difficiles à cicatriser, surtout s'il fallait se les remémorer. De cela, elle lui en était reconnaissante... Même si la jeune femme noire en avait profité pour la critiquer en passant, l'air de rien...
Revenant de ses pensées, Tulia jeta un coup d'œil, un peu plus en bas, sur Ejas qui se frottait les tempes et semblait fatigué.
- Tu ne crois pas que nous y sommes allées un peu fort ? Commenta-t-elle lorsqu'elle fut assez près de sa compagne.
Regardant à son tour l'objet de la discussion, Atenis haussa les épaules.
- Ça lui apprendra à croire que nous sommes des ouailles obéissantes. Regarde-le, avec son air suffisant, le même que son chef. Si je pouvais lui faire avaler la poussière à celui-là...
D'un commun accord, toujours tacite, elles n'avaient pas voulu obéir aux injonctions du messager. Même si elles avaient été fascinées par les téméos, elles ne souhaitaient pas être catégorisées comme membres à part entière de cette communauté étrange, elles ne l'avaient pas accepté. Elles souhaitaient ainsi bien faire comprendre à leur « guide » que les règles de cette cité ne s'appliquaient aucunement à elles.
Fenhara, quant à elle, avait passé le plus clair de son temps à apaiser Ejas ce qui avait amusé les deux autres compères. Elles s'étaient soutenues entre elles face aux dangers rencontrés et leur promiscuité avait permis d'identifier le caractère des unes et des autres. Fenhara était celle qui tentait d’amender les relations conflictuelles et notamment l’humeur d’Ejas présentement. Tulia en ricana.
- Je ne te connaissais pas aussi cruelle... Que regardes-tu ?
Atenis tourna de nouveau son regard à travers la vitre pour se poser un peu plus loin en contrebas.
- À l'extérieur... As-tu vu ? C'est incroyable, nous n'avons même pas réellement entamé la visite de ces structures en verre qu'il y a encore une autre ville en bas, je n'avais jamais rien vu de tel.
Tulia observa la ville qui s'étendait en dessous. En effet, habituée aux chaumières et aux bâtisses en pierres, elle était impressionnée par ces infrastructures étranges avec ces tours immenses qui se dressaient ici et là et se terminaient par des toits en spirales. La plupart des habitats étaient construits de verres et de métaux gris qui reflétaient les rayons du soleil et faisaient penser à une ville lumière. Elle pouvait apercevoir la foule de gens, en bas, se presser dans les rues faites de pavés. Ici, des chevaux côtoyaient les téméos et dans le ciel, à peu près à leur hauteur, elles observèrent un ballet d'énormes animaux volants qui transportaient sur leurs ventres des passagers dans des compartiments rectangulaires. Le spectacle était impressionnant et, parallèlement à cela, une autre ville se tenait dans les airs. En effet, la construction de verre, dans laquelle elles se trouvaient présentement, était encastrée en partie dans la roche montagneuse qui entourait la cité et communiquait, à droite et à gauche, avec d'autres structures similaires par des couloirs en verre de forme cylindrés. Un troisième corridor s'élevait vers le ciel, mais se perdait dans les nuages blancs de l'après-midi. Tulia porta son regard ensuite à l'horizon et constata que plusieurs étendues de champs étaient parsemées dans la cité.
- C'est inimaginable, comment une telle population a-t-elle pu passer inaperçue ? S'enquit-elle, stupéfaite.
- Crois-tu sincèrement qu'il s'agit d'une mascarade ? Au vu de leur nombre, je ne crois pas que ce soit une plaisanterie, mais... J'ai quand même du mal à avaler que nous soyons « destinées » à intégrer leur cité... Qu'en penses-tu ? Demanda Atenis.
« Destinées » ? Qu’était-ce le destin ? Se demanda Tulia intérieurement. Était-ce lui qui l'avait laissé orpheline ? Elle avait passé sa vie à survivre et ne s'en remettait qu'à elle-même. Elle avait une approche cynique de l’existence et les croyances de cette communauté ne l'intéressaient pas. Cependant, il fallait bien l'avouer, cette cité n'avait rien de comparable à ce qu'elle avait pu rencontrer auparavant, mais était-elle prête à s'établir ici ? Elle avait toujours vécu de manière aléatoire, n'allait-elle pas perdre sa liberté d'action et de décision en restant ici ? Elle n'avait pas d'attaches ailleurs et l'inconnu ne lui faisait pas froid aux yeux, mais ces gens étaient réellement étranges. Il fallait qu'elle en sache un peu plus ; pouvait-on faire partie de cette communauté et avoir la liberté de sillonner les contrées par la même occasion ? Il était vrai qu'elle cherchait un endroit où elle pouvait définitivement se sentir chez elle, un endroit où elle pouvait retourner et appeler « sa maison ». À partir du moment où on ne l'obligeait pas à pratiquer des croyances qui ne la concernaient pas, elle ne voyait pas pourquoi elle serait opposée à s'établir ici ? Réfléchit-elle, considérant cette probabilité. Cette communauté semblait plus avancée que les pays extérieurs... Et plus riche. Cela semblait vraiment avantageux, après tout, s'ils voulaient la considérer comme l'une des leur, pourquoi ne pas en tirer profit ? Le sourire de Tulia s'élargissait au fur et à mesure qu'elle fomentait un nouveau plan dans sa tête et elle répondit à Atenis :
- À vrai dire, je n'ai pas réellement d'attaches et j'ai besoin d'un repas chaud le soir. Que ce soit ici ou ailleurs... Contrairement à moi, Fenhara et toi avez un endroit où retourner.
Atenis inspira. Elles étaient, en effet, libres de rester ou de partir. Et même si les circonstances les avaient réunies, elles avaient chacune leur propre vie et pour sa part, un père et une mère qui l'attendaient. Mais il y avait dans cette communauté, quelque chose d'extrêmement intriguant.
- Encore faudrait-il que nous puissions retourner chez nous, rétorqua-t-elle. Penses-tu réellement qu'ils nous laisseraient partir aussi facilement après avoir découvert toute cette assemblée ? Ne deviendrons-nous pas une menace pour eux ? Et s'ils nous libéraient, ne nous mettrions-nous pas en danger, nous et nos familles ?... Et dans l'hypothèse qu'ils nous relâchent, je ne suis pas sûre qu'ils auront beaucoup de bonté pour nous escorter jusqu'à Bourqua. Au meilleur des cas, ils nous montreraient la sortie vers le désert et nous devrons nous débrouiller pour survivre jusqu'à notre retour...
- Que devons-nous faire alors ? Intervint une voix derrière elles.
Atenis et Tulia se retournèrent pour voir Fenhara qui les avait rejointes sur son téméos et les fixait droit dans les yeux. Elle avait entendu la tirade de la jeune femme noire et son résonnement était juste. Rien ne leur garantissait la sécurité si elles décidaient de s'en aller.
Atenis ferma les yeux et appuya l'index et son pouce sur l'arête de son nez comme si elle luttait contre une migraine.
- De toutes les façons, nous ne pouvons rien faire maintenant, répondit-elle. Nous n'avons pas assez d'information pour prendre des décisions qui pourraient nous mettre en danger. Nous devrions nous laisser jusqu’à demain pour nous renseigner sur cette cité et trouver la manière la plus sûre de sortir d'ici, de connaître le réseau de passage qui existe et qui faciliterait notre retour... Nous devrions agir prudemment, nous ne savons pas réellement si nous pouvons faire confiance à ces gens.
- Magnifique ! Approuva Fenhara.
Elle n'était pas encore prête à se séparer de ses compagnes et souhaitait, tout comme elles, en découvrir un peu plus sur cette communauté étrange. Elle n'avait jamais expérimenté une telle aventure et savait qu'en rentrant chez elle, sa mère ne l'autoriserait plus à sortir sans sa présence. Peut-elle pourrait-elle la convaincre de s'établir ici ? Car il fallait l'avouer, cette cité l'impressionnait. Elle ressentait une énergie qui semblait la traverser tout entière, elle était pourtant dans un lieu qui lui était totalement inconnu, mais cette cité l’attirait énormément. Du moins elle n'avait pas autant de méfiance que ses compagnes. Elle devait comprendre un peu plus cette étrange communauté afin d'apaiser les craintes que sa mère ne manquerait pas d'élever si elle souhaitait s'établir dans cette ville et puis... Il y avait quelque chose qu'elle s'était promise de découvrir ici…
- Nous devrions peut-être commencer à soutirer les informations au messager dans un premier temps et repérer les lieux, non ? Commença Tulia.
Elles acquiescèrent d'un commun accord et Fenhara ajouta :
- Ils doivent nous affecter une chambre commune temporaire d’après Ejas, je pourrais m'y rendre pour préparer notre installation et glaner peut-être d'autres informations ?
- Bonne idée, ne perdons pas plus de temps, conclut Aténis.
Cette dernière, suivie de Tulia, entreprit de se diriger vers leur guide tandis que Fenhara s'éloignait de son côté. Les deux compères ne craignaient pas de se séparer de leur amie pour le moment, car les nouvelles recrues devaient assister obligatoirement ce soir aux entraînements des soldats pour finir la première journée de visite de la cité. Il s'agissait du programme qu'avait concocté Ejas et il souhaitait impressionner les jeunes femmes avec l'élite guerrière de la Communauté.
