"Cameo? Cameo, are you awake?" No, he wasn't. Not really. His eyes had barely opened for a second before the heart rate monitor beeped. But he was awake now, nothing could change that.
He groaned and rolled over, stuffing the pillow over his head.
"No."
Infinity laughed and squeezed his hand. "You're feeling better than yesterday, right?"
He grudgingly pulled the pillow off of his head. "Yeah, I guess. My arm still hurts like the дьявол, but other than that, I'm mostly fine."
Infinity sighed. "Good."
He opened his mouth to speak, then hesitated. Gathering his courage, he asked, "I thought you were Colton, didn't I?"
Infinity bit her lip. "Yes."
"I'm sorry."
"You have absolutely nothing to apologize for, Cameo. So shut up."
He recoiled at her sudden use of language. Infinity laughed again. "You're a bad influence, Hunt."
"Hmph. Я не виноват, что Джейден меня так обучил," he muttered under his breath.
"Relax, I'm kidding. They wouldn't put you in charge if they didn't think you had any good influence in you."
"No, they put me in charge because I saved them from a mansion kitchen, and then buried their dead parents. They put me in charge because I deserve to be in charge. But I don't want to be in charge! No one asked me if I wanted to lead a war. Because I don't, Infinity. I never have. But I'm the only one who can do it. So here I am, stuck in a hospital bed because my own soldiers won't listen to me!"
Infinity placed her hand over his mouth. “Thomas is not one of your soldiers,” she said vehemently. “Thomas mutinied and is now a prisoner of war. He’s officially not worth keeping alive.”
“His girlfriend?”
“Broke up with him yesterday. No tears from her, just serious ‘I wish you were dead, but not just ‘cuz you’re my ex’ type vibes.”
“No one else who could possibly care if he died or not?”
Infinity shrugged. “I asked him. He said everyone who knew him hated him. One guy actually tried once, but Thomas was stronger and the other guy ended up…” She trailed off and drew a finger across her throat.
“Ah. I see.”
“But he’s causing too much trouble. You heard Tanner say he almost escaped. He’s tried twice more since yesterday.”
Cameo shifted on the bed. “Assaulting a superior officer in a time of war is punishable by death.”
“I can get someone to-”
Cameo sat up and hauled himself off the bed. “I’ll take care of him myself."
