The bus came to a screeching halt in the ambulance bay of the hospital. Ethaniel and Tanner leapt out and crashed through the doors, looking around desperately for a stretcher. Finally, they found one and wheeled it out to the bus. When they opened the door to the storage area, Infinity bit her lip and grabbed Cameo’s hand. Ethaniel and Tanner gave each other a knowing look, then carefully placed Cameo on the stretcher and began wheeling him through the doors.
Cameo moaned and opened his eyes. He looked around, not recognizing Tanner or Ethaniel. His gaze landed on Infinity.
“Colton, are we at the hospital?”
Infinity nodded. She didn’t want to take away his brother again, so she continued to pretend.
“Oh.” He closed his eyes.
Infinity looked away.
The boys pushed the stretcher until they came across a room that didn’t look like a bomb had exploded in it. Gingerly wheeling Cameo through the door, they gently lifted him onto the hospital bed. They backed out of the room and turned to see Infinity and Harley, and behind them, the two hundred or so teenagers they’d brought with them from Yellowknife.
“They want to help,” Harley said, speaking for Infinity, who’s eyes were full of unshed tears. “What can they do?”
Tanner stepped forward. “Okay, who likes to read?” Roughly forty hands shot into the air. “Go find some medical textbooks and read as much as you can on how to treat infection.
“I want a four-person, rotating, overlapping shift, round-the-clock security detail on Thomas. He stays in the bus.
“Half of the rest of you, go down to the kitchen and see what you can find. We’ve got a lot of mouths to feed, so get going.
“The other half, you need to figure out where medicines and bandages and all those supplies are.” Tanner took a breath. “You all have your assignments, so get out of here!”
Harley and Infinity stayed while the others dispersed. The younger girl had her backpack in her hand, the one full of all her high-tech experiments. She quietly opened the door of Cameo’s room and crept in, sitting down in a corner and spreading her machines out around her.
“What are you doing?” Ethaniel hissed.
“Looking up cures, what’s it look like?” she hissed back. Infinity walked in behind her and tugged a chair over next to the bed. Tanner and Ethaniel shared an exasperated look, rolled their eyes, and joined Infinity in her vigil.
“Well, he won’t wake up alone at least,” Tanner whispered, slightly annoyed.
“He might think he does though,” Infinity said, tears slowly falling down her cheeks. “He thinks I’m Colton, and he doesn’t recognize any of you. If I’m not here, he’ll think he’s all alone."
