He barely made it a hundred yards before the weight of what he had done overcame him. When it did, it felt like a ton of bricks hitting him in the chest. He dropped to his knees and cried. He held his head in his hands, rocked back and forth, trying to stop the fight from bleeding out of his soul.
“Cameo, what are you doing?” Her voice was full of sympathy and understanding. He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.
“Nothing,” he whispered, not turning to face her.
“You’re crying.” Infinity walked around in front of him and knelt down. “You’re crying because you killed him.”
He nodded miserably.
“That’s a good thing. He can’t hurt anyone else now, okay?” She cupped his chin in her hand.
“I’ve killed two people since this suicide trip started. I’ve almost died more times than I want to count. I’ve attempted to kill you at least twice. You have got to see by now that I am not a person anyone should be around. I’m not okay. I’m going insane, Fin.”
“Then we’ll reel you back in,” another voice spoke from behind. “There’s not a person here who doesn’t think you’re the only person to lead this suicide trip. And God help Jaiden when you find him.”
Cameo whipped his head around to see all the teens standing behind Tanner, Ethaniel, and Harley. Every one of them was smiling, not sympathetically, but determined, harsh, brutal, and bloodthirsty.
Ethaniel stepped forward, his footsteps carrying out through the forest. “We will defeat him, not because we’re stronger, smarter, faster, older, or wiser. We’ll beat that son of a jerk because we have the one thing he doesn’t. A reason, a mission, a determination that no one else on this earth can have besides a bunch of crazy, hormonally-imbalanced teenagers with a death wish. And Cameo, believe me, you are the craziest one out of all of us, and that’s why you’re leading this suicide trip. Because if you don’t, none of us will ever be able to live in a free world.
“So if you’re going to lead us, suck it up and get on the bus. We’ve got roughly six hours to go and we are attacking at dawn, so we’ve gotta get a move on.” He cocked an eyebrow. “What do you say, General?”
Cameo took a deep breath and stood up. “Let’s go,” he said, his voice rough and low, “and if I get an iota of complaining out of any of you, I will have you court-martialed.”
The crowd cheered and Infinity smiled. She took his hand and squeezed it tight. “Where you go, they will follow. And so will I."267Please respect copyright.PENANAtQtYLCiyJf
