โAnd here we have the commanders of the young army, five intrepid youngsters,โ the obnoxious newscaster blared out of the hotel TV's speakers. โCameo Zachary Hunt is the leader, with Infinity Cali Costello, Ethaniel Flynn Taylor, Harley โGizmoโ Daliah Jackson, and Tanner Brady Thorne close behind him. These are the people you need to thank for saving your children and killing your tyrannical president! Cameo, do you have anything to say to the folks at home?โ
Cameo snatched the remote off of the coffee table and muted the television. Ever since the press had shown up at the remains of the White House three days ago, interviews with him and his team had been playing nonstop on every channel. He was sick of all the attention, especially when they would ask what his relationship with Infinity was. She wouldnโt even look at him, let alone answer for him, so he lied and said she was nothing but an acquaintance.ย
Infinity walked into the hotel room just then, carrying a bundle in her arms. Even from where he sat, he could sense the restrained fury and betrayal rolling off of her.ย
โThey just delivered the car back to my dad, and the chauffeur will be here in ten to pick us up. Whereโs Harley?โย
Cameo cocked a thumb over his shoulder. โBedroom. Sheโs with Ethaniel.โ She nodded and knocked on the bedroom door.
โCome in!โ a giddy voice squealed from behind the door. Infinity nudged open the door with her foot, her arms full with the strange package.ย
Harley was curled up in Ethanielโs lap, beaming. Her lips had that just-been-kissed tint to them, and Infinity smiled.ย
โI brought you something, Giz! Oh, and I got this for you,โ she said, tossing a bottle of Tylenol to Ethaniel.
โOh my word, thank you,โ he sighed, knocking back two pills dry. Harley slid off his lap and took the gift from Infinity. She sat down on the carpeted floor and gingerly peeled away the brown paper.
Gasping, she lifted the box into her arms. It was a state-of-the-art, brand new computer. She ripped open the cardboard box and pulled out the slender piece of tech. Its gleaming silver casing glinted in the light. Harley squeaked out a thanks before she completely disappeared into her own little engineering world. Ethaniel strode over and plucked the computer out of her hands.
โHey!โ she yelped.ย
โChauffeur gets here in five minutes, Giz. You gotta put away your toys for now.โ
Harley grumbled but obeyed, carefully rewrapping her new computer and gently placing it alongside her backpack full of all her other tech.
Infinity backed out of the room, right into Cameo. โSorry,โ she said coldly, and ducked away. Cameo sighed.ย
A loud knock startled them both. Cameo ran over to the bathroom and pounded on the door.
โThe guyโs here!โ
โOkay, okay, Iโm coming!โ Tanner yelled and yanked open the door. Harley and Ethaniel walked out of the back bedroom, and the whole gang was together. They looked at each other and smiled sadly. Soon, they would be going in different directions. Infinity was going back home, Tanner back to Yellowknife, and Cameo, Harley, and Ethaniel were going to be traveling the globe, taking children back to their homes.ย
Cameoโs eyes locked with Infinityโs, but they were filled with such an intense hatred that he had to look away, so he turned and opened the penthouse door. An older man in a suit stood outside the door.
โLadies, gentlemen, I am here to take you to the airport.โย
As they followed the elderly man, Cameo dragged his feet, each step taking him farther from the girl he loved.
