Cameo was at the wheel in the predawn darkness. With Infinity beside him and Harley just behind, asleep, it was easy to picture that first night. She had noticed the stars and he had noticed her.
He glanced at her, long enough to see that she was not entranced by the stars, but by him.
“What?” he asked.
“Nothing.”
“There’s definitely something,” he returned.
“You just seem… different… from when we met.” She reached up and touched his face, tracing her finger down the cut on his lip. “You seem older than sixteen.”
“I have to, Fin. I’m the General of an army, I’ve killed two people, I’ve nearly died myself. What else can I do but not act my age? I’m not sixteen anymore. I’m so much older. I’ve lost so much,” he sighed.
“Cameo, you are not the only one. We’ve all lost things these past few weeks. I’ve lost my whole life, the Yellowknife kids have lost their families, Ethaniel nearly lost his life. But it hasn’t been for nothing. We’ll beat him and make him hurt just as much as you’re hurting now. Because I know you’re hurting, even if you’re too proud to admit it. I also know that I’ll be here for you, no matter what.” Infinity promised.

Infinity ran her finger down his cheek, tracing his jawline, touching his lips with the tips of her fingers. He sucked in a breath as her fingers touched the cut on his chin.
Lights twinkled on the horizon, shining in the predawn gray light.
“D.C.” Infinity whispered. Cameo nodded. She stood up. “I’ll go tell everyone.” She bent down and kissed his cheek. “I’ll be right back.”
Cameo nodded again.
She would be back.
