โSo, you guys stole a helicopter?โ
Ethaniel shrugged. โI found it, Harley hotwired it. It wasnโt that hard, I have to say.โ
โCanadian military bases are surprisingly easy to infiltrate,โ Harley broke in.ย
Cameo laughed. โCrazy kids. I canโt leave you alone for a week without you getting into trouble,โ he reprimanded jokingly. Ethaniel playfully punched his shoulder.
โI could say the same for you two,โ he chuckled, throwing an arm around Cameo and Infinity. โWhat have you two been up to?โ
Infinity looked at Cameo and blushed.
โWell,โ he cleared his throat, โwe broke into Groth Industries, planted that virus, stole a cop car, nearly died by P.U.K.E., saved the teenager population of Yellowknife Canada, buried every dead, decaying parent there, and oh yeah, I murdered someone by throwing them off of the roof of a building fifty stories up. Itโs been a weirdโฆ How long?โ He shook his head and closed his eyes, thinking. He sighed and opened his eyes. โEight-ish days?โ He rolled his eyes. โWhatever. Not like it matters.โ His voice had risen and the kids on the highway were all staring at him. โWhat?โ
Emma, Tannerโs girlfriend, was the first to speak. Her voice was small and scared. โYouโฆ murdered someone?โ Tanner took her hand and squeezed it. Cameo gritted his teeth, telling himself not to lose control, but it was pointless. He was already gone.

He turned and bolted down the slope that led off of the road. He crashed into the forest, terror clawing its way up his throat. Thorns caught his pant legs, roots tripped him, but he ran on into the deep unknown.
Infinity knew, before anything happened, that he would take it all too hard. She ran after him, but stopped once she reached a clearing. On the far side of the clearing was a rock face with a cliff jutting out over the ground. She gasped when she saw Cameo, dangling from the bottom of the overhang, holding on with his fingertips. She closed her eyes as he swung and catapulted over the edge to safety. When she opened them again, he was gone.
She knew he would come back to her when he was ready, so she turned around and walked back through the forest, back to the buses. She turned to face the teenagers and said, โI believe the next group for shooting is males sixteen and up.โ
Cameo had scaled the wall with ease, whether from practice or fear, he didnโt know. Now he was stumbling through the woods, holding his shirt against a large gash on his upper arm where he had scraped it against the cliff. His fingertips were scraped and bleeding, his legs and arms were sore and bruised, and all he wanted to do was lie down and sleep. He sat down on a patch of moss and leaned against a lichen-covered tree. He was exhausted, dehydrated, and starving, but with no water or food, satiating these hungers was impossible. His head lolled back and he closed his eyes.ย
When he opened them again, a large black wolf was standing over him. He tensed and straightened, but immediately fell back, too tired to fight. But the beast wasnโt looking for blood. It nudged him with its nose, prodding his ribcage. When he stood up, the creature turned, as if asking for him to climb onto itโs back. When he did, the wolf began to run through the forest. Scared and beat up, he could hardly hang on, but somehow he did. The dark wolf flew like a shadow through the forest, making no sound as it leapt over logs and landed like a feather on the other side. Cameoโs hands were shaking by the time the wolf stopped by a clear stream fed by a rushing waterfall. He slipped off the wolfโs back and fell to his knees by the crystal water. As he cupped the water in his hands, the wolf slunk back into the forest. He began shivering. He started unwinding his shirt from his arm, but when it stuck to the blood still trickling from the wound, he became worried.ย
โNo,โ he whispered. He pried the shirt off his arm and gritted his teeth. Pus oozed from the cut. Infection, he knew, could kill him faster than cold or hunger. He wanted to search for a plant to help with pain and inflammation, but none that he knew of grew in this part of Canada. Instead, he wrapped his arm back up after washing his shirt in the river and began collecting bark and small twigs. After piling them up to his liking, he took a look around for something to make a spark with. Finally finding a small shard of flint, he flipped a knife out of his jean pocket and struck them together. As the small pile of tinder caught and smoked, he fed small sticks into the fire.ย
Once he had a sizable flame, he unwrapped his arm again. More pus squeezed out, and the wound smelled septic. Grimacing, he plunged his arm into the frigid November stream. He sighed audibly as the water washed into the cut and flushed out the pus and blood. It felt so good that he stepped into the eddy by the shore and lay in the still water, letting it flow over him, cleaning his torn, loved, broken, kissed body. He closed his eyes as darkness fell, but soon the cold began to numb him, and he climbed out, sitting down next to his small blaze. His jeans were saturated and his dark hair was plastered to the back of his neck, but he felt better than he had in days.
A branch snapped in the forest behind him. He turned to see the wolf creeping out, dragging a large deer behind him. He held a hand to his heart.
โYou scared me.โ
The wolf dropped the carcass in front of Cameo, then walked behind the waterfall. Cameo didnโt hesitate; he flicked his knife open and began carving a chunk out of the deerโs back thigh. Warm blood spurted out over his fingers and he gagged, but he kept sawing away at the meat. When he had a steak-sized piece, he sliced the skin and fur off and dropped it into the fire.
A single sharp bark issued from the waterfall, and the black wolf emerged, followed by a pure white wolf and a litter of dusky gray pups. When the puppies saw the deer, they ran toward it and bit into it while their parents looked on with pride. Cameo smiled and leaned against the tree, watching in fascination.
โYou're a dad?โ He whispered. The dark wolf cocked his head, as if in response. โAnd these are your pups?โ This time the wolf nodded. โHuh. Cute kids.โ He leaned over and flipped his steak.
When his food had been cooked as long as he could wait, and he had licked the last of the juices off his fingers, the wolves guided him into their den, a cave behind the waterfall. There was barely enough room for Cameo to stand up, but it had a large feel to it. The white wolf slunk to the far end of the cave and lay down and the little wolves curled up next to her. The dark wolf pushed Cameo towards them with his nose, and he walked over, tentatively lying down next to the wolves. The black wolf curled up on the other side of him. Cameo slept there, surrounded by warm fur, man and wolf sleeping side by side.
