- Maître ! Le passage a été activé !
Sérek se retourna sur l'un des membres de la Communauté. Il s'acharnait à entraîner une partie de son équipe lorsque le jeune homme l'interrompit. Il fronça les sourcils et attendit que le messager termine sa salutation pour lui répondre impatiemment :
- Eh bien ? Qu'il y a-t-il d'extraordinaire là-dedans ? Notre Communauté emprunte un certain nombre de passages plusieurs fois par jour.
- Maître... C'est que le passage qui a été utilisé a été ouvert... Avec le réceptacle...
Sérek resta interdit un moment avant de recouvrer ses esprits rapidement. Qu'était-ce encore que cette histoire ? Bien que restant perplexe, il abandonna immédiatement son entraînement et désigna du doigt quelques guerriers.
- Vous ! Venez avec moi !... Mène-nous vers ce passage, Ejas. La Désignée est-elle au courant ? Ajouta-t-il à l'adresse du messager.
- Non, je vais l'informer tout de suite...
- Non ! Le coupa-t-il brutalement, ne lui dit rien, nous allons vérifier cela par nous-même. Il se peut que ce soit une fausse alerte, ne l'embarrassons pas plus...
- Bien maître.
Le cœur de Sérek battait vite, étaient-ce les autres ? Pourquoi s'aventuraient-ils ici bon sang ? Jura-t-il intérieurement avant d'ordonner à plusieurs de ses soldats de le suivre. Trop absorbé par ses pensées, il ne s'aperçut pas qu'ils étaient déjà arrivés à l'écurie qui leur était réservée. Ils traversèrent une entrée surmontée d'un fronton représentant une bataille équestre avant de se retrouver dans une large allée pavée, entourée de grands bâtiments couverts de lauses et qui abritaient les box des chevaux. À l'intérieur, des palefreniers s'activaient ici et là à nettoyer les box et, à leur arrivée, trois d'entre eux se chargèrent d'approcher leurs montures déjà préparées, obéissant ainsi à un ordre muet. Sérek se hissa sur son cheval d'un geste mécanique, tout de suite imité par ses soldats. Ils suivirent le messager qui les guida vers le passage activé. Ils possédaient plusieurs passages et certains étaient difficiles d'accès pour un non-initié car ils étaient entourés d'innombrables dangers. Aussi fut-il surpris lorsque le messager lui apprit que c'était celui situé dans la forêt de Bourqua qui avait été utilisé. Si ce n'étaient que de simples habitants, les nombreuses bêtes qui y vivaient se seraient chargées de leurs sorts. Non. Cela ne pouvait être que les membres de leur Communauté ou... Les autres.
Ils se mirent en route et galopèrent sous le soleil de plomb à travers le désert brûlant. Ils arboraient tous des masques qui leur permettaient de dissimuler leurs identités en présence de personnes extérieures à leur Communauté, mais elles avaient d'autres fonctions bien précises à l'intérieur même de leur groupe, car chaque masque avait une distinction hiérarchique. Le sien était unique, car sa fonction était unique. Il était le Second de la Désignée et, en tant que tel, il était le dépositaire des règles instaurées par elle. Il appliquait et relayait les ordres provenant de ce guide et nul ne pouvait aller contre sa volonté, car telle était celle de la Désignée. Aussi lui témoignait-on presque le même respect qu'à cette dernière. C'était un honneur d'accéder à cette place, mais l'honneur le plus grand était de se faire désigner par l'Essence...
Ils aperçurent au loin l'entrée du passage, construite à la base d'une petite montagne de pierres rouges, qui leur servait de porte vers la forêt. D'énormes rochers étaient parsemés ici et là et Sérek soupçonna que les nouveaux arrivants pouvaient être embusqués derrière l'un de ces énormes blocs. Aussi ordonna-t-il la prudence à son équipe et ils ralentirent les chevaux, se rapprochant prudemment du passage. Le Second observa ce dernier. C'était l'une des nombreuses portes qui avaient été construites depuis le commencement. En effet, elles avaient été créées pour que la Communauté puisse se déplacer et surveiller discrètement toutes les contrées sans que quiconque ne s'en aperçoive. Ces portes les transportaient d'une terre à une autre en quelque temps au lieu des jours ou des lunes requis pour ce genre de voyage. Des inscriptions étaient gravées sur chaque porte et l'initié devait les lire à voix haute pour pouvoir ouvrir le passage. C'était le dialecte de la Communauté mais on pouvait, cependant, recourir à la clé qui ouvrait toutes les portes ; la main. La main ouvrait plus que des portes, c'était leur symbole redoutable et à cause de sa trop grande valeur, elle était gardée sous haute protection... Or, elle était censée avoir disparu. Qui l'avait retrouvée ? Et pourquoi revenir avec en sachant ce qu'elle représentait ? Trop absorbé par ses questions, il sentit plus qu'il ne vit l'agitation des chevaux et ordonna à ses soldats de mettre pied à terre. Ils dégainèrent leurs épées et entamèrent lentement leur progression, abandonnant derrière eux leurs montures. Un énorme rocher leur barrait le chemin et un autre monolithe naturel, plus loin à leur droite, siégeait quasiment devant le passage. Ils étaient à l'affût et bien qu'ils n'aperçussent aucun intrus, ils avaient la certitude d'être épiés. Le silence devint alors pesant. Un vent sec se leva, entraînant une poignée de sable à leur suite. Ils suaient sous leurs masques et leurs respirations se faisaient plus courtes et plus rapides à mesure qu'ils se rapprochaient du premier rocher. Sérek se demanda alors pourquoi il n'avait pas pris plus d'hommes. Certes, ses soldats faisaient partie de sa garde rapprochée et étaient très entraînés, mais il ne pouvait pas se permettre de se mettre stupidement en danger alors qu'une menace planait sur la Communauté maintenant. Il se concentra de nouveau sur son objectif, ce n'était pas le moment d'être distrait. Le rocher n'était plus qu'à quelques pas, il fallait agir vite et il fit un signe en ce sens à ses compagnons qui hochèrent silencieusement la tête, puis il donna alors l'assaut. La petite équipe se retrouva rapidement derrière le rocher, épée en main et prête à essuyer une attaque... Personne. C'est alors qu'ils perçurent un mouvement venant du second bloc de pierre et Sérek ordonna :
- Ils sont là-bas, rattrapons-les !
La petite milice se mit alors à la poursuite des embusqués qui avaient déjà réagi et détalaient aussi rapidement qu'ils le pouvaient. Dépassant leur cachette, les poursuivants se rendirent compte que les lâches avaient tout prévu ; des chevaux avaient été dissimulés derrière une crête et les soldats se firent distancer facilement. Il était déjà trop tard pour récupérer leurs propres montures et se mettre à leur trousse, ils les avaient perdus.
- Ahh !!! S'énerva Sérek.
- Vous avez vu ? C'étaient des hommes de Véa, s'exclama un soldat.
- Oui, on a tous vu, on ne s'y tromperait pas, renchérit un autre.
- Que faisaient-ils ici, aussi loin de leur territoire ? C'est insensé ! S'exclama Ejas qui les avait guidés jusqu’ici.
- Cela veut tout simplement dire qu'ils ont de moins en moins de limite, la confrontation devient imminente, répondit calmement le Second en rengainant son épée.
- Vous croyez qu'ils étaient ici pour nous épier ?
Sérek se retourna finalement et entreprit de marcher vers son cheval. À quoi bon de rester ? Ils leur avaient échappé, se disait-il.
- Oui, ils étaient sûrement ici pour récolter des informations. Il faudra, dès notre retour, que nous instaurions plus de sentinelles qui sillonneront les alentours de la cité, répondit-il néanmoins.
C'était incroyable ! La Désignée se mettra sûrement en colère lorsqu'elle apprendra cela. Leur Communauté s'était installée dans le désert depuis quelques siècles, mais elle n'avait pas toujours résidé dans cet endroit, il n'y avait pas eu lieu. Mais depuis que les hommes de Véa leur étaient devenus hostiles, il avait fallu parer à toute éventualité et un gigantesque déménagement était alors devenu indispensable. Il leur avait fallu quelques printemps pour effectuer ces changements, mais en ce temps-là, la population de la Communauté n'était pas aussi nombreuse. Il était alors apparu beaucoup plus aisé de reconstruire la cité que de défendre des murs qui se seraient effondrés à la première attaque de leur ennemi. Cet ennemi qui connaissait toutes leurs faiblesses. Aussi, afin de rester discrets, ils avaient dû recourir à des stratagèmes extrêmement efficaces, tels que les passages et le labyrinthe de Bourqua qu'ils avaient creusés dans la montagne il y avait fort longtemps de cela. À cette époque, la ville n'existait pas encore, il n'y avait que quelques maisons et quelques hères, mais son emplacement stratégique attira bientôt les marins, les pêcheurs, et toute une ville se créa ainsi autour de cet estuaire. Cette contrée se révéla, beaucoup plus tard, être un enjeu considérable car elle avait toujours eu à sa tête un roi entièrement dévoué à leur cause. Ainsi, l'influence de la Communauté sur les guerres et les politiques de toutes les contrées se traduisait par les décisions du roi de Bourqua. Elle était d'ailleurs à l'origine du traité de paix, signé par les pays voisins. Mais si la Communauté de l'étoile était derrière certains bienfaits, celle de Véa était à l'origine des tensions actuelles qui n'avaient pour but que de l'affaiblir. Et ça, il en était hors de question.
Sérek retira son masque, aussitôt imité par ses compagnons, il n'y avait plus lieu de les garder maintenant que la menace avait été écartée. Leurs pas crissèrent sur le sol caillouteux et les rayons du soleil semblaient vouloir transpercer leurs chairs. Aucun homme ne pouvait survivre plus de deux jours dans un tel milieu hostile et aucune armée ne pouvait donc soutenir un siège. Ils avaient choisi le bon endroit. Tout à coup, un de ses hommes le tira de ses pensées. Il était retourné vers le rocher où s'étaient embusqués leurs ennemis et il leur faisait de grands gestes pour attirer leur attention.
- Il a découvert quelque chose, constata Rohl.
C'était son conseiller le plus proche et ce qui pouvait s'apparenter à un ami. Rare étaient les décisions qu'il prenait sans l'avoir consulté au préalable. Rohl lui était fidèle, ce dont il en avait énormément besoin, surtout en ce moment. Ils s'étaient rencontrés dans la Communauté et avaient évolué ensemble. Ils étaient devenus très proches et ce fut aussi naturellement que Sérek l'avait assigné au rang de grand général des armées. Ce n'était pas seulement parce qu'ils étaient amis - on ne pouvait pas faire prévaloir des intérêts personnels à ceux de la Communauté - mais parce qu'il était très compétent et adoptait la même vision que lui ; la Communauté passait avant tout autre chose. Cet esprit engagé leur avait valu l'entière confiance de toute la population... Mais surtout celle de la Désignée.
La petite troupe se dirigea vers le rocher et un petit vent apporta un instant de fraîcheur bienvenu. Certains soldats portaient des turbans pour se protéger de la chaleur, d'autres avaient préféré enlever leurs tuniques, exposants leurs torses aux rayons du soleil et révélant ainsi d'étranges motifs sur leurs corps qui s'illuminèrent au contact de la lumière. Arrivés au rocher, tous furent stupéfaits de la découverte qu'ils firent ; trois femmes gisaient à terre et semblaient encore vivantes si on se référait à leurs respirations régulières.
- Mais… ? Qui sont-elles ? Que font-elles ici ? Demanda Rohl stupéfait.
- En tout cas, elles étaient avec eux, affirma Ejas.
- Il y en a une qui saigne, constata un soldat.
Sérek se pencha sur la femme noire, un filet de sang s'écoulait de sa tempe gauche.
- Ils les ont assommées...
- Mais pourquoi ? Demanda le messager, intrigué.
- Je crois qu'elles les ont interrompus...
- Mais comment ont-elles fait pour arriver jusqu'ici ? Insista Rohl. Elles n'ont pu venir que par le passage, or il a été activé par la main, comment l'auraient-elles eue en leur possession ??
- J'ai déjà vérifié, elles ne l'ont pas, intervint le soldat qui les avait découvertes, répondant ainsi aux questions muettes qui se lisaient sur la plupart des visages.
- Bien sûr. Si elles l'avaient en leur possession, les hommes de Véa l'auraient sûrement dérobée, affirma le Second.
- Croyez-vous qu'elles venaient nous le rendre ? Demanda Ejas.
Sérek resta perplexe. Qui étaient-elles ? Pourquoi seraient-elles venues le leur rendre ? Et surtout comment connaissaient-elles leur existence ?
- Et si c'était un piège ? Soupçonna Rohl. Et si justement les hommes de Véa nous les avaient laissées exprès pour que nous les ramenions dans notre cité ?
- C'est plausible... Concéda-t-il.
Puis, observant les trois femmes pendant un court instant, le Second décida :
- Laissons-les là. On observera de loin ce qui se passera. S'il s'agit d'un piège, ils reviendront sûrement les récupérer, auquel cas... Elles mourront de déshydratation.
Tous satisfaits de cette décision, ils hochèrent la tête et s'éloignèrent déjà à l'exception d’Ejas qui hésita. Il avait remarqué quelque chose d'étrange. Il crut tout d'abord que ce n'était qu'un effet d'ombre mais se décida à en avoir le cœur net. Il se rapprocha alors de la jeune femme rousse. Sa tête était penchée sur la droite et ses cheveux masquaient une bonne partie de sa figure, néanmoins ce n'était pas ce qui l'intéressait, mais plutôt l’arrière de son cou. Il s'agenouilla et écarta ses cheveux de façon à le dégager et resta interdit par sa découverte.
- Mais... ?! Maître !
La troupe s'arrêta et Sérek fit volte-face, un peu agacé de s'attarder plus que nécessaire dans ce lieu, et demanda d'un ton brusque :
- Quoi encore ?
Le visage grave du jeune homme inquiéta le Second qui se rapprocha des corps pour voir ce que le messager avait découvert. Ejas releva la tête tout en écartant les cheveux roux pour que son maître puisse voir sa découverte.
- Je ne crois pas que nous puissions les abandonner ici...
Sérek fixa, stupéfait, le cou de la jeune femme où une petite marque était présente mais qui aurait bien pu passer inaperçu, car elle se situait au niveau de sa nuque. Une petite étoile y était dessinée, avec une branche plus longue que les autres qui se terminait par un point. Il s'agissait du même motif qui ornait, de dimensions différentes, le torse et le dos de ses soldats. Il n'entendit même pas le jeune messager ajouter dans un murmure :
- Elles sont des nôtres...
