Fenhara et Ejas traversèrent les couloirs cylindrés en direction de la grande bibliothèque située dans la cité des honorables. Après avoir mis au point leur stratégie, les trois compères s’étaient séparés et Tulia avait été dirigée par la suite vers une salle d’entraînement, ne laissant que Fenhara et le témérite en tête-à-tête.
Ce dernier avait fait la priorité de déterminer une bonne fois pour toutes les capacités latentes de la nouvelle recrue rousse et la guidait maintenant d’un pas décidé vers la bibliothèque. En arrivant dans la cité des honorables, Fenhara ne se lassa pas encore d’admirer le décor malgré d’y avoir déjà été confrontée hier. Tout le monde n’y étaient pas admis, seuls les hauts officiers militaires, les grands administrateurs de la cité et autres comités décisionnaires pouvaient accéder à cette mini-ville. La taille de cet édifice dépassait largement les structures en verre encastrées dans la montagne dont elle était dorénavant devenue familière. La spirale de métal, entourant la cité à l’extérieur, laissait filtrer des bandes de lumières éclatantes, ici et là, donnant ainsi à l’endroit une atmosphère féerique. Un parterre d’un granit lisse et rose recouvrait le sol et une immense statue en albâtre blanc pouvait être vue à une centaine de pas de la position d’où ils se trouvaient. La statue représentait un homme et une femme, dos à dos, tenant chacun une épée levée à une main. Les traits doux et sereins des visages contrastaient avec la tenue forte des épées qui semblaient vouloir s’abattre à tout moment. Fenhara s’y était extasiée pendant quelques instants avant d’avoir été informée qu’il s’agissait d’une sculpture des premiers Désignés, Véa et Témérian. Tout comme dans les autres structures, des bancs de pierre étaient disposés ici et là, et même une chute d’eau était accolée à un mur et laissait tomber doucement une eau claire dont le bruit régulier se mélangeait au léger brouhaha dégagé par la foule qui traversait la grande place. Fenhara se demandait toujours pas quel prodige cette communauté arrivait-elle à construire de tels édifices dans les airs et comment ils arrivaient à faire apparaître des chutes d’eau de nulle part ?
Tandis qu’ils poursuivaient leur marche, ils croisèrent ces fameux « honorables » vêtus de tenues plus solennelles composées de longues tuniques bleues à collets montés, toujours avec des étoiles brodées en fils rouges. Le lieu était moins agité qu’ailleurs, plus serein avec les pas mesurés des locaux, mais néanmoins troublés par ceux des gardes, plus énergiques, qui assuraient la sécurité de la mini-cité. Ejas dirigea Fenhara vers un élévateur qui s’arrêta au deuxième étage et la jeune femme jeta, malgré elle, un coup d’œil vers les étages supérieurs et en bas. La cité était organisée en forme de cercle et les appartements et salles étaient agencés dans les renforcements latéraux, de sorte que le centre de la cité était totalement ouvert à la vue depuis n’importe quel étage. Tout en haut, se tenaient les appartements de la Désignée et c’était à l’avant-dernier étage qu’elle avait pu apercevoir les potions des cérémonies d’intronisation et, de l’autre côté de ce même étage se tenaient les appartements et le bureau du Second.

La voix d’Ejas la ramena de sa contemplation et la jeune femme se concentra maintenant sur la fameuse bibliothèque. Cette dernière semblait occuper tout le second étage et plusieurs entrées semblables étaient parsemées sur tout le tour du balcon ouvert. De grandes portes en bois massif lisse à doubles battants étaient encadrées par des colonnes de pierres de couleur marron. Une impression de grandeur se dégageait de ces entrées et Fenhara se sentit intimidée malgré elle. Ce sentiment s’accentua lorsqu’elle pénétra dans la bibliothèque, à la suite d’Ejas. Au premier plan, se trouvaient de longues tables où les honorables pouvaient consulter les ouvrages. Par la suite, des rangées et des rangées de manuscrits se succédaient et se prolongeaient sous les grandes hauteurs du plafond. Des salons plus privés étaient disponibles dans une ambiance plus sombre que l’espace consultative. Des honorables déambulaient parmi les rayons de livres, d’autres, assis, consultaient de vieux manuscrits et Fenhara identifia certains portant une bande de tissu jaune sur leurs habits comme étant les responsables de la bibliothèque. La jeune femme n’eut, cependant, pas le loisir d’observer plus en avant, car le messager la guidait déjà vers une autre entrée située bien à l’arrière de toutes les rangées de livre et qui était surveillée par deux gardes. Ces derniers leur ouvrirent une porte à deux battants à leur approche.
Ejas précéda Fenhara et pénétra dans une pièce totalement obscure au premier coup d’œil. Mais après quelques instants d’adaptation, la jeune femme se rendit compte que des objets étaient éclairés par des lueurs tamisées situées juste au-dessus d’eux. Ses sens étaient troublés par le manque de repères visuels. Tout paraissait être fait pour que l’attention soit portée essentiellement sur les objets au centre, car la pénombre recouvrait le reste de la salle et en cachait les dimensions qui restaient floues. Ejas guida la jeune femme par le bras, cette fois-ci, comme s’il devinait que la nouvelle venue ne pouvait pas se diriger toute seule dans cet espace, puis il la positionna en face des objets. À cette distance, Fenhara pouvait distinguer clairement qu’il s’agissait de livres posés, chacun sur un socle élevé et transparent. Les livres étaient de diverses couleurs et de grosseurs différentes. Cette présentation dans cet environnement sombre, et les lumières feutrées dispensées sur chacun des livres, rendaient la scène solennelle. Fenhara se sentit encore intimidée et jeta un regard hésitant à Ejas qui la lâcha et expliqua, tout en posant ses yeux sur les objets :
- Voici la salle que nous appelons « Dilselectio ». C’est une salle qui a été construite spécifiquement pour contenir les livres que vous voyez. Ces manuscrits datent de plusieurs millénaires et nous ont été transmis par les Désignés qui les préservent de la détérioration en infusant continuellement leur énergie. La lueur qui les illumine n’est pas une lumière dispensée par des cristaux, mais bien l’énergie de notre Désignée.
Fenhara ouvrit de grands yeux et les reporta plus attentivement sur les lueurs qui irradiaient les livres. Plus elle se concentrait, plus elle percevait une légère aura enveloppant les objets. Fait surprenant, ces auras s’appropriaient la même couleur que les livres qu’elles enveloppaient et cela intrigua fortement la jeune femme qui tourna sa tête, encore une fois, vers Ejas.
Ce dernier croisa ses mains dans son dos et la regarda enfin avec un petit sourire :
- C’est ici que va se dérouler le test de détection de vos pouvoirs. Chaque livre contient des enseignements sur des thèmes spécifiques et ce sera le thème que vous aurez sélectionné qui nous indiquera si vous avez réellement des prédispositions ou pas.
Puis, reportant son attention sur les livres, il reprit :
- C’est donc très simple. Vous allez devoir choisir parmi ces vingt livres celui qui vous attire le plus. La constitution de cette salle a été réalisée de sorte que l’initié ait la possibilité de se concentrer sur son choix, mais aussi qu’il puisse emprunter l’énergie de la Désignée afin d’augmenter son intuition. Cela lui permettra d’effectuer sa sélection de manière plus affirmée et sans ambiguïté.
- Et si je souhaite choisir plusieurs livres ? Intervint Fenhara.
- Cela s’est très peu produit, mais reste possible. Dans ce cas, il vous suffira de sélectionner le second livre à la suite du premier, tout simplement. Lorsque vous allez vouloir choisir, vous ressentirez une forte impulsion, quasi-irrésistible, de vous diriger vers un manuscrit. Ce sera ce livre qui définira la nature de vos pouvoirs.
- Il me dira comment les utiliser ? À quel stade suis-je ? S’enquit Fenhara de plus en plus intriguée.
Ejas émit un petit rire face à ces multiples questions.
- Non, pas vraiment. Ici, nous allons juste déterminer la nature et le potentiel d’évolution de vos aptitudes. C’est-à-dire la limite vers laquelle peut tendre votre don si vous réussissez à le développer à pleine puissance. Nous allons par la suite vous affecter à un travail qui correspondra à vos capacités et qui sera utile à la Communauté. Vos dons se développeront par l’exercice continuel de vos facultés dans le cadre de votre travail qui sera dispensé par vos supérieurs. Ce seront ces derniers qui pourront ainsi évaluer, plus spécifiquement, l’ampleur de ces aptitudes dans le temps, leurs limites et vous aider à les développer si nécessaire.
- Beaucoup ont-ils pu progresser en pratiquant avec leur travail ? Demanda encore la jeune femme en pensant à sa propre affinité avec les plantes.
- Bien sûr, mais cela dépendra de vos propres capacités.
Si elle pouvait améliorer ses dons, que serait-elle bien capable de faire d’autres ? Elle pourrait peut-être même trouver des remèdes pour Atenis ou éviter à Tulia et à elle de consommer les breuvages imposés par les Témérites ? Fenhara réfléchissait à toute vitesse. C’était une opportunité qu’elle devait saisir. Ses deux autres amies se débattaient pour pouvoir trouver des solutions pour s’échapper, elle devait, elle aussi, faire sa part du travail. Elle inspira profondément et serra les poings. Les yeux fixés fermement sur les objets, son visage reflétait la détermination de ses pensées et Ejas le remarqua. Elle semblait être prête, il lui indiqua alors :
- Vous pouvez commencer maintenant. Inspirez et relaxez-vous dans un premier temps, puis concentrez-vous sur les livres. Laissez-vous vous imprégner de l’énergie de la Désignée, ne la rejetez pas. Enfin, lorsque vous serez prête, faites votre choix en prenant le temps nécessaire.
Fenhara suivit les instructions d’Ejas et ressentit un petit frémissement dans son corps, elle se sentait envahie par quelque chose de doux qui la détendit incroyablement. Cela devait être l’énergie indiquée. Le silence était assourdissant. Le temps s’était comme figé pendant un court moment, car aucun mouvement, ni son n’étaient perçus. Même la présence d’Ejas semblait avoir disparu. Fenhara s’avança alors vers les livres. Ses pas étaient mesurés, mais elle était dans un état second. Elle ne réfléchissait plus et était comme hypnotisée par un livre vert clair en quatrième rangée. Cependant, arrivée à sa hauteur, son corps, comme téléguidé, marqua une courte pause avant de continuer vers un autre livre qui se trouvait à la cinquième rangée, juste derrière le livre vert. Cette fois-ci, son corps s’arrêta devant le manuscrit d’une couleur verdâtre. L’aura de même couleur qui enveloppait ce livre était même parsemée de taches noires mais la jeune femme ne remarqua pas ces détails. Ses yeux étaient agrandis, happés inexorablement vers la couverture vieillie du livre dont de petites déchirures apparaissaient sur les bords. Le centre de la couverture prenait la forme d’un cercle creux avec, à l’intérieur du cercle, la forme d’un arbre. Fenhara étendit la main pour la toucher, le visage affichant une avidité grossière, totalement étrangère à sa personnalité. Mais ce fut au moment où ses doigts allaient se poser sur le livre que la lueur douce se fit tout d’un coup plus vive, presque qu’aveuglante, cependant, Fenhara n’en avait cure, elle était comme obsédée par la possession de cet objet. Ses mains se mirent à brûler au contact de cette lumière éclairante qui paraissait vouloir la repousser, mais la jeune femme exprima un grognement presque animal de contestation qui accompagna un visage déformé par la frustration. Elle se jetait entièrement sur le manuscrit pour le saisir sans parvenir pour autant à le toucher, la lumière la maintenant à distance comme si un champ de protection s’était formé autour du livre. Ses habits se mirent à brûler à mesure que le champ émettait une chaleur de plus en plus élevée. Fenhara hurla et grogna en même temps, mais n’abandonna aucunement sa lutte pour s’accaparer le trésor qu’elle ne quittait pas des yeux avec une obsession anormale. Ce fut alors à ce moment-là qu’Ejas intervint. Il la saisit par l’arrière, tentant de l’éloigner du livre, cependant la jeune femme se débattit comme si elle était possédée par un animal. Elle le griffa au visage, voulant se soustraire à l’étreinte du messager, mais ce dernier put la maintenir fermement. La petite stature du guide le laissait paraître frêle et inoffensif aux yeux de tous et il n’était, certes, que le messager de Sérek, neanmoins pour le devenir, il était absolument indispensable de faire partie de la garde rapprochée du Second. Ejas était bel et bien avant tout un soldat d’élite. Tenant toujours Fenhara qui se débattait comme une furie, le guide l’emprisonna dans ses bras et réalisa en arrière, le même bond que Tulia avait effectué dans la salle d’entraînement. Grâce à ce saut, il se retira de l’espace où étaient concentrés les livres, juste à temps, avant que le champ d’énergie ne s’élargisse et ne les englobe. L’intensité de la lumière l’obligea à se protéger les yeux avec son bras tandis qu’il protégeait Fenhara avec son corps en la plaquant au sol. La lumière ne s’étendit pas jusqu’à eux, elle se contenta de subsister quelques instants sur tous les livres avant de se rétracter et de revenir à son état initial. Encore ce silence assourdissant qui se fit de nouveau comme si rien de grave ne s’était produit quelques instants plus tôt. Les seuls éléments attestant d’une activité anormale dans la salle étaient la haute chaleur ressentie et des lettres témérite de couleur orange qui étaient apparues dans les airs et qui recouvraient maintenant toute la salle, à l’exception du centre où étaient disposés les manuscrits. Le messager observa, pendant quelques instants, si la situation était sous contrôle et rendit gloire silencieusement au dispositif des lettres orangées. Ces symboles étaient la sécurité qui s’activait pour contenir l’énergie de la Désignée au cas où ce flux deviendrait incontrôlable, comme présentement. Cela permettait de protéger la Communauté, à l’extérieur, de ce pouvoir capable de consumer littéralement tout objet ou forme vivante sur son passage. C’était un mécanisme de sécurité qui, d’ailleurs, avait été étendu aux salles d’entraînement, car cela empêchait ainsi les soldats dotés de dons de détruire les édifices dans lesquels ils s’exerçaient. Des symboles étaient ainsi dessinés sur toutes les surfaces des salles pour éviter l’effondrement des murs dus à la pression énergétique. Ce mécanisme était donc dupliqué dans chaque endroit où le pouvoir témérite était susceptible d’être activé, comme aussi dans les passages dissimulés dans les contrées, par exemple…
Ejas se redressa enfin, la respiration saccadée tout en attendant que les symboles illuminés s’éteignissent les uns après les autres d’eux-mêmes, plongeant de nouveau la salle dans son obscurité initiale. Qu’avait-il bien pu se passer ? Se demanda-t-il, déconcerté. Il avait vu la jeune femme se diriger vers les manuscrits situés aux dernières rangées, hésiter sur sa direction puis s’arrêter sur ce vieux livre de couleur vert noir. Il n’avait qu’une vue de son dos et n’avait pu, de là où il se tenait, remarquer le blocage invisible qui empêchait Fenhara de toucher le livre, ni l’expression de son visage. Ce ne fut que lorsque la lumière s’était intensifiée qu’il avait réalisé la dangerosité de la situation et avait réagi avec une rapidité impressionnante. Il ne s’était pas préparé à ce que cet incident intervienne avec Fenhara - peut-être avec les deux autres - car elle semblait être celle qui se conformait le plus aux consignes. En effet, la puissante réaction était une forme d’interdiction qui apparaissait lorsque le candidat n’était pas censé choisir un objet parce que, de la même façon que le Témérite empruntait l’énergie de la Désignée pour réaliser son choix, de la même façon, l’énergie pénétrait dans le corps du Témérite pour s’imprégner de son essence. En d’autres termes, il ne pouvait pas avoir de tricherie quant au choix effectué, l’énergie déterminait d’ores et déjà les différents choix possibles du candidat en fonction de son essence. De ce fait, si l’individu souhaitait choisir un livre selon une stratégie réfléchie et non en fonction de son être propre, il se verrait repoussé puis consumé s’il continuait à forcer son choix. Fenhara n’avait donc pas sélectionné le livre par impulsion mais par calcul. Elle avait triché et n’avait pas suivi ses instructions. Ejas ne s’attendait pas à ce qu’elle adopte le même comportement que ses deux autres comparses ! Sourcils froncés, il se détourna des livres pour reporter son regard sur la jeune femme, toujours à terre. Elle affichait un air hébété et perdu comme s’il elle ne comprenait pas ce qui lui était arrivé. Comment aurait-elle pu ? Il ne lui avait pas averti de cette sécurité, c’était normal. Mains sur les hanches, le messager soupira bruyamment tout en décrochant un regard noir à Fenhara qui gardait les yeux grands ouverts, encore sous le choc. Puis son regard se posa sur ses mains et ensuite sur ses habits qui avaient été brûlés et le guide soupira de plus belle, dépité.
