It comes as a shock to realize something that you haven’t realized before.
Here’s the thing: the flaws we see in other people are most often the flaws we see in ourselves.
You would normally not compare yourself with such things, but sometimes, it's hard not to notice the similarity. The realization is shocking all the same, though.
It’s not something you think about. You push that part of yourself away. You try not to let your mind wander to that. So, when you finally do see it then it's so… surreal. Almost like seeing yourself, you watch the flaw with awe.
You ask yourself, “Is that really what I’m like?”
Then as you pick apart that flaw, you begin to pick apart yourself. You go over everything. The lines that separated you and the rest of the world grow thin as you realize you’re just like them all.
The notion of you being unlike the thing you hate the most is that of a personal lie. Shielding yourself from what you are is the reason you haven’t changed it. You can’t fix what you believe you are not. Self-denial being the worst kind.
The illusion that you surround yourself with crumbles. A rock plummets from your chest to your stomach in a heartbeat. You are suddenly so aware of what you truly are like. You try to recount all the times where you may have been bewitched by this flaw.
Acknowledgment of what you may have been overwhelms you. Then, you begin to think of yourself as the flaw. You are the wrongdoer. You’ve made the mistake of trying to be something you’re not.
You are the worst you have seen in other people. You are the thing that you’ve been disgusted with.
This feeling is so indignifying. You’ve lost yourself in the act of judging others when you are the one with the fault. You are the scum that can’t even see your true self until you have seen it played out before you as something else.
