[CLARIFICATION ABOUT KARIN’S LINE IN 635] SHE DOES *NOT* SAY THAT SASUKE NEARLY KILLING HER ‘FELT GOOD’
Sorry, guys! I’m quite late this week because I didn’t have the internet. Thankfully, most of you are aware of this translation issue already, but since it never hurts to share… :D
When the chapter came out last week, we got Ohana’s script and made a post about it in the SK FC. However, I wanted to wait for the raws to make sure there were no discrepancies between the script and the chapter before sharing it here.
Now that the raws (and even the official translation) are out, here we go~!
To summarize, Mangapanda (sadly) went overboard with one of Karin’s lines.
Karin does not say that Sasuke nearly killing her “felt good”.
Kishi did a pun; a pun that was also a little nudge to one of Karin’s old lines.
In Chapter 351, Karin uses “たまらない” (tamaranai) to say that Sasuke is irresistible; in that case, she was being turned on by him.
However, “たまらない” can be read in different ways; and its connotations aren’t always positive.
たまらない 《堪らない》 (exp,adj-i) (1) (uk) intolerable; unbearable; unendurable; (2) (uk) irresistible; tremendous; out of this world; (3) (uk) (after ~て/~で form) cannot help (doing); cannot but do; anxious to do;
So when, in this chapter, Karin goes all: “T… that’s not it! Why would I like/How can I like that shithead Sasuke!! He almost killed me… *unbearable / can’t help*… no, t… that’s not it!!” (literal translation)
***
There’s a pun: it could either be read as Karin having a slip of the tongue about her feelings for Sasuke (which is what mangapanda went for, albeit in a very tasteless and overdone fashion), or Karin realizing her words could be taken the wrong way and thus hurrying to clarify and deny that she likes him once again.
***
She is, as Thimble puts it, quite incoherent when she gets in her 'flustered’ mode, after all. But she’s pretty adamant in her denial of not liking 'that shithead’ Sasuke, haha.
All in all, it’s a pun that’s quite hard to render properly in English. Which is why mangastream left it out altogether, and why VIZ went for an adaptation instead.
Lastly, there is something really adorable in Suigetsu’s and Karin’s exchange: even more wordplay and puns. You can read all about it, HERE~!
Someone in Tumblr also posted her own take about this issue; it’s very thorough and makes for a very interesting read, so don’t miss out! :D HERE
