"I am not going to waste my breath explaining anything to you."
And with that Jenny was gone. Without another word, Nancy and I headed back to the hospital. My head was spinning. An explanation. There has to be a logical explanation.
And there was. A set of events began from that night that took the case in a whole different and unexpected direction.
The first thing that happened was that my Dad opened his eyes. He didn't speak but he was awake and the doctor was optimistic that he would be better soon. It was the happiest day of my life. I spent the evening imaging him recovering and rehearsing the apology that I owed him.
Little did I know everything was about to get worse.
I was asleep on a hard plastic chair. Not exactly the best sleeping arrangements but when you lay awake half a night worrying, you kind of tire yourself out into sleeping the other half.
It was a small noise that woke me. At first I wondered if I had heard anything at all. Then I heard it again. A faint voice calling for help and it came from the ICU.
