What in the world? The voice in my head muttered several times as some women calmed Daisy and took her away to a room. Uncle Elias stood at the center, grief burning in his dry eyes. Many people standing in the living room kept staring at him. An explanation…That’s what they wanted. But they didn’t dare ask…689Please respect copyright.PENANA4cnDU8JZXc

“I think it’s time we went.” Someone whispered beside me. Jenny…She was calm, almost startlingly so, despite the insanity that was going around us.689Please respect copyright.PENANATms1jSotJQ

And she pulled me away. Even as we walked out of the gate, I heard Aunt Daisy’s screams. She was cursing Uncle Elias…She wanted nothing more than to see him hanged.689Please respect copyright.PENANAgJaLa5H5JI

Again, her calmness frightened me. Her voice was cold and matter-of-fact. As though she knew something that I didn’t.689Please respect copyright.PENANAMUJaV5pxuU

Did Jenny sense my thoughts? I think she did. Her eyes narrowed dangerously as she looked at me and said. “What's wrong?”689Please respect copyright.PENANAwhCFXCLU3z

"I think I should be the one asking you that question." I said. "What's wrong, Jenny?"
"There's..." She began. "No...It's nothing. I..."
"Blackmail..." The voice whispered.
At that point, I completely lost it. I was tired of hearing vague phrases and words, not knowing who was thinking what...It was infuriating - like having only five pieces of a jigsaw and trying to figure out what the whole picture was.
"Jenny..." I cried. " What about blackmail? Who's blackmailing who and how the hell do you know about it. Just tell me."
Jenny took a step back and stared at me, her face white. "How..."
"It doesn't matter how I know. I'm...I've just about had enough. Just tell me."
People were staring but I didn't care. I kept yelling at her to tell me, while she just kept staring at me. Someone pulled me away from Jenny back into the house and into into an empty room.
"Calm down." A gentle voice ordered.
She was an old woman, surely above seventy years of age. Her kind face was full of wrinkles. Her brilliant blue eyes were full of a quiet sense of power.
"I'm sorry..." I muttered, awkwardly.
"I have never seen the power in so young a person before."
It was as if I was struck by a lighting bolt. I stared at her, trying to at least ask one question but my voice got stuck somewhere in my throat.
"Listen..." she said quietly. "I am going to give you one piece of advice and I want you follow it."
"Why can I...How..."
"Girl..." She said gently. "There are some people who are very good at reading others. They can see through lies and deception. they can sense when others are feeling down. They are very good listeners and have a wonderful memory for even the most trivial things they hear. One day they find that they have access to something they shouldn't have. The thoughts and memories of other people."
"Why?"
"Even I don't know. But I do know this...It's not a boon...It's a curse..."
"A curse?" I remembered the darkness...The irrational outburst I had just now...
"The power grows stronger every day. It wouldn't be long before you understand what that means. Most go insane, unable to make sense of it."
"I..."
"Here's my advice. Keep to yourself for a few days and ignore the voice. It will fade away on it's own."
"I..."
"Listen to me, girl. Using this power will take a lot out of you. Remember what I said about going insane? That's the best outcome."
"What's the worst?" All the information was overwhelming. I wasn't scared but that was probably because my brain was still processing the things I just heard.
"You'll pass out and never wake up."
To be continued...
