I remembered the episode I had after Jolly’s death. The terror I didn’t feel before slowly crept in. But a rational part of me had already started advising me against trusting this stranger. Who was this all knowing person who suddenly popped up to advise me against using my power?
“Promise me you’ll stop. Promise me you won’t destroy yourself.” She held on to my hands and shook them, her eyes sad and pleading. “I have seen what…”
“Who are you? How do you know this?” I freed my hands from her grip and asked her firmly.
“That doesn’t matter. What matters is…”
“I ignore the voice muttering about murder and blackmail? How am I supposed to do that?”
“Sometimes…It is best to ignore things that do not concern you.” For the first time since our meeting, she looked uncertain. She looked like someone whose plans just went wrong.
“Did someone…” I asked her suddenly. “Are you here to scare me?”
But that was absurd. No one knew about what I could do? Not even Jenny.
“If you are not scared you are either remarkably brave or insanely stupid.” She said. I could make out a faintly sinister edge to her voice now. “If you want to commit suicide, I can’t stop you. I can only tell you this. Ignore the voice. Just…Just keep to yourself for a few days…It will go away…”
And she was gone, leaving me standing there, confused, angry and frustrated. I didn’t stop her. What use was it when I was quite sure she would not be helpful?
Then I remembered Jenny…It was odd that she let that old woman pull me away and even odder that she didn’t follow me. Blackmail…That was what she was thinking. Now that my thoughts were somewhat clear, it was quite obvious to me that Jenny and the word blackmail would never go together.
So who?
Of course…There was one person involved with Jenny who could get tangled in blackmail.
Her father.
Michel Sir…Our school manager.
And a dear friend of Uncle Elias who was just accused of murder by his wife.
