I had always thought myself a brave person. I had always been secretly proud that I wasn't a shrinking violet like Jenny. It was a good feeling. Holding my head high even when bad things happened.
But the day the voices started, I realised how wrong I was in ever classifying myself as a brave. I am a coward, plain and simple. I had stood up against the so called bad things only because they weren't really bad at all. I mean...Would teasing and bullying even compare to murder?
I was terrified when I walked into the classroom. My eyed were doubtful when I surveyed my classmates. Which one of them was capable of murder? I even tried to concentrate hard to hear the voice again. But no...After a full day of tormenting me, it had finally decided to shut up.
At recess, I tailed Jolly. There was nothing different about her as far as I could see. She was being her usual rude and nasty self.
Everyone in my school knew Jolly Johnson. Beautiful and talented, she had the whole school wrapped around her little finger. She was charming towards the members of her little gang, polite and sweet tongued towards the teachers...No one had anything bad to say about Jolly except people like me and Jenny. The outcasts...The misfits...
To us, Jolly was a nightmare. She was cruel, poison-tongued...All in all she was an absolute jerk. She was jealous of Jenny, I knew. That was why she was always saying horrible things about her.
"Nancy...Why do you even bother coming to the rehearsal? What can you do for the talent show? You wrote the play...But there's nothing you can do in it."
Nancy simply sighed, her face showing no emotion. I felt sorry for her. She used to be quite the dancer until...A car accident took her leg. And guess who's the new dance star now? Jolly...And she never loses an opportunity to rub salt on Nancy's wounds.
"Now...I don't want you there today evening. We don't want your..."
She said something I did not catch. Nancy flinched as though Jolly had slapped her.
"Why don't you say this in front of a teacher, Jolly?" Nancy whispered.
I laughed loudly, causing Jolly to turn towards me.
"The guardian angel..." She said, mockingly. "Are you this desperate to earn friends, Miss. Nosy? Sticking up for people with a zero friend count...Oh! Birds of a feather flock together, huh? Nancy here is rather defenseless..."
"Shut it!" I said, firmly.
"Sure...Be glad someone came to your rescue, Nancy." Jolly smirked. With a contemptuous glance in my direction, she was gone.
"Did I invite you to come here and stick up for me?"
I tore my eyes of Jolly's retreating back. Nancy's angry eyes glared at me. "I don't think I asked for a bodyguard."
"Nancy..."
"I can take care of myself." She said bitingly.
Suddenly, I heard it again. Loud and clear like the time I heard it in my bedroom.
"One day...I will kill her..."
I stared at Nancy. She turned away from me. A sob escaped her lips.
"One day she will pay for this..." The voice screeched.
To be continued...
