One True Love - Chapter 13

Feeling the brightness of the sun behind my eyelids, I opened my eyes to a brightly lit room. I turned my head to my right to find my beautiful wife waking up, blinking her eyes several times to adjust to the light. I smiled at her and wrapped my arms around her waist, earning a smile from her.

"Morning babe," her melodious voice filled the room.

"Morning," I replied, before connecting my lips with hers. The sweet taste of her lips filled my senses, causing me to deepen the kiss to get more of her. A moan escaped my lips as I felt her legs entangle mine. I rolled us over, landing on top with my hands on both sides of her head and leaned down for another kiss. No matter how many times I kissed this woman, I knew that I would never get tired of the feeling I always got when we parted.

The sound of our heavy breathing filled the air as I looked down, admiring her. "My shirt looks great on you but," I looked at the ceiling and stroked my invisible beard as if I was thinking about something deeply, "I like it better when it's─"

The doorbell rang and caused me to cut my sentence short. I was about to get off of her when I felt her arms wrap around my neck, pulling me towards her, and connecting our lips. I desperately wanted to continue to kiss her but the bell rang again.

"Can you get it?" I asked, peppering kisses along her jaw line. Even though I asked her that, I wanted nothing more than for her to stay in bed with me.

"No you go. It's probably George wanting to borrow something," she said. Her eyes shone with defiance as she tried to avoid getting up.

"Fine," I groaned, pecking her lips softly, before dragging myself out of the bed. I walked down the stairs quickly as the bell rang repeatedly. If it was our neighbour George, then whatever he needed to borrow must have been important.

I swung open the door and instantly regretted not wearing a shirt.

"Sup bro?" My younger brother Mike asked, or rather stated, as he entered the house uninvited. Walking in behind him was his girlfriend Amanda. I noticed her eyes glued onto my chest and tried to cover it with my arms. A small smile spread over her lips before she looked up to my eyes and said "Good morning."

I heard footsteps as Victoria made her way downstairs. I really hoped she had put on something decent, I didn't like the thought of my brother having his eyes on my woman.

"Babe─" She immediately stopped what she was going to say and Amanda walked to the stairway.

"Victoria!" she sang, as if she had just seen a long lost friend.

"Um... Hey Amanda. How's it going?" I heard Victoria reply.

"Great, just great" she said, "you look... great."

At the sound of that I assumed that she had changed into something else. I walked behind Mike to join the girls.

"What are you─" Mike stopped speaking as his eyes landed on my wife.

"Good morning Tori," he said, looking down to her exposed legs. I wasn't very happy to see him admiring my wife but I didn't want to seem too possessive, knowing that Victoria didn't like it when I over protected her.

"Morning," she said, a small smile gracing her lips. Every time I saw a smile of hers, I wanted to desperately place mine against them. "So what are you two doing here? The barbecue doesn't start until one," she continued.

I looked at Mike and he looked at Amanda. "We wanted to help you guys get ready," she replied, smiling brightly.

"Oh but it's only," my wife began, lifting her wrist and looking at it almost as if she had a watch there, only to find it empty.

"It's ten." Mike's voice filled the silence. She whispered something under her breath before replying.

"Oh... okay. I can make us a quick breakfast." She started to walk towards the kitchen.

"That's okay, we brought breakfast. Egg Mcmuffins anyone?" Mike said, holding up a brown McDonald's bag. A relieved smile fell onto Victoria's face as she turned to face him.

When we finished eating breakfast, I ran upstairs to take a quick shower and change into a black shirt and a pair of jeans. I walked towards the kitchen and heard Victoria and Amanda speaking. In the background, I could hear Mike playing a videogame in the living room.

"Well Alex needs to pick up a few groceries. Mostly the vegetables and drinks since we already have the turkey thawing in the fridge," Victoria said.

"I can go with Alex to the store to pick up the groceries. I need to go pick up something for later," Amanda said.

I stopped by the doorway of the kitchen. I didn't like the idea of being alone with Amanda. Ever since she started dating Mike, I always got a bad feeling when we went on double dates. The hugs that we shared as a greeting were always too long for my liking.

I sighed and tried to push that thought to the side, hoping that nothing would happen when we went shopping. I walked into the kitchen and wrapped my arms around my wife's waist, planting a soft kiss on her cheek.

"I'll be back soon babe," I said as she turned around and placed a kiss on my lips.

"Amanda is going with you. She needs to pick up something," she said, wrapping her arms around me. I looked at Amanda and saw her smiling at me slightly, causing me to frown before I remembered Victoria was here and looked back at her with a smile.

"Okay babe. See you soon," I said before lightly kissing her again. I smiled contently when we pulled apart and kissed her forehead before leaving with Amanda.

We walked towards my car and sat in with her in the passenger seat and me in the driver's. I quickly drove to the store, trying to minimize the amount of time I would be alone with her.

I parked the car once we got to the parking lot of the grocery store and got out of the car, hearing the other door open and close as Amanda got out. She smiled at me brightly and I returned it with a small smile before walking towards the store.

"So are you looking forward to the barbecue?" she asked, walking slightly closer to me.

"Yeah I guess." In all honesty, I was looking forward to it because I knew that most of the family would be there; and it had been a long time since we had all gotten together. However, the thought of my mother being in the same room as Victoria's family scared me a little.

From the day she met her, I knew that my mom would not be happy with our relationship and that proved to be true when she constantly tried to talk me into divorcing her.

On our wedding day, she came into my room as I was getting ready and asked me a lot of questions which were meant to drive me away from her as she helped me with my tie. And just recently, when she came to our house for dinner, she pulled me to the side and made remarks about my wife which made me very angry.

I really wanted to tell her that no matter what she said, I knew that Victoria was a good woman; and she had proved that to me with the way she treated me and the way she made me feel. Whenever I was around her, I felt as if I was floating on a cloud, a cloud of happiness which would always keep me up no matter what. I loved her and I knew that she felt the same way. And we would both always feel the same way about each other.

The feeling of someone touching my arm broke me out of my thoughts as I stood in front of the vegetables with a head of lettuce in hand.

"You two make a lovely couple," an elderly lady, pushing a walker, said as she looked at Amanda and me with a large smile.

"Thank you ma'am, I always thought so," Amanda replied. My eyes widened as I looked between her and the woman.

"Sorry we're not─"

"We have to get going," Amanda interrupted me and pulled me into an aisle with canned food.

"What was that about?" I asked her, making my anger evident in my voice. She looked at me with a coy expression on her face.

"I was just accepting a compliment Alex." And with that, she walked back to the vegetables to pick out some corn and added it to the half full cart.

I unlocked the front door and walked in, immediately surrounded by the delicious aroma of my Victoria's cooking. I walked towards the kitchen with bags in my hands, a small smile on my lips upon seeing her appearance.

"Hey babe," I said, giving her a light kiss before placing the grocery bags on the island.

"Hey." A large smile lit up her face. The sound of shoes hitting against the floor caused us all to turn to look at Amanda as she entered the kitchen.

"Brought some corn for the grill," she said, holding up the bag before putting it on the island.

"Awesome," Mike said with large grin.

We all got something to do as we prepared for the barbecue. The air was filled with a delicious smell which made it really hard not to eat anything. Victoria left to get ready while Mike and I went into the living room to play a videogame.

"You're so going down," he said, putting in the disc for Fifa 14.

"Oh we'll see," I smirked, taking a seat on the sofa and picking up a controller.

The sound of realistic cheers filled the room as we started a game. He was winning by two when I scored my first goal. The last time we played, I had won by four but it looked like he had gotten some practice since then. The game ended with him winning by two. I stood up from my seat and went upstairs to check on Victoria.

I walked into my bedroom to find her putting on a necklace. I quietly walked up behind her and grabbed the necklace from her slowly.

"Let me help you with that," I whispered into her ear. I closed the rings of the necklace and before she could comprehend what was happening, I turned her around and placed my lips on hers and my arms around her waist, getting the feeling that I always got from kissing her.

As the kiss deepened, I removed my arms from her waist to place my palms on her soft cheeks. We pulled apart and I looked into her beautiful eyes and smiled.

"I love you Victoria," I said, pecking her lips softly, "and there's no one else I'd rather be with."

Tears welled around her eyes as she smiled at my words. She wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me thoroughly.

"I love you too Alex. I always will."

We leaned into each other for another kiss but were interrupted by the voice of my dad.

"You two joining us for dinner or not?" He asked as he looked at us with an amused expression. Victoria and I looked at each other and smiled before I replied.

"We'll be down in a second."

We had finished dinner and everyone was dispersed around the house, doing something which entertained them. I walked into the kitchen and got a can of soda, opening it and taking a sip from it. I took a few steps towards the exit until I was stopped by Amanda.

"Hey," she said, flashing me a bright smile. I smiled back slightly before I walked past her, attempting to leave. She grabbed onto my wrist and turned me around, asking "why don't you like me Alex?"

I looked at her with my eyebrows drawn together in confusion. "What are you talking about?" I asked her.

She pushed me hard against a wall in the kitchen and ran her hand over my chest. I looked at her in shock before it died down and I tried to push her away. However, my effort was useless as she pressed me harder against the wall.

"She's not good enough for you Alex, and you should know that," she said, putting her face closely to mine.

Anger began to fill me as her words echoed around the room. I didn't appreciate anyone speaking about Victoria negatively; not my mom, and definitely not my brother's girlfriend.

"Don't you dare speak about her like that. You could never be the woman that she is," I countered. She smiled deviously and placed her forehead on mine.

"I'm twice the woman she is. And I can show you." She pressed her lips tightly on mine and wrapped her arms around my neck. I tried to push her away one more time but it was too late. Someone had already seen us; and it was the last person I wanted it to be.

"Alex?" she asked, almost as if she couldn't believe the sight before her. Amanda broke her lips away and looked at her with a smirk. I looked at Victoria with a heartbroken expression. I could tell that she already suspected the worst of me. She looked back at me with watery eyes, trying to hold in her tears.

She walked towards us with her eyes glued to the fridge. I grabbed onto her wrist when she got closer, trying to tell her what really happened.

"Babe." My voice came out strained. She jerked her arm away, causing my heart to feel as if someone had taken it and ripped it apart.

"Don't call me babe," she said, a trace of anger accompanying her voice.

"Let me explain. It's not─"

"Not what it looks like?" she interrupted, "because I think it is exactly what it looks like." She turned around, opened the fridge and took out a can of soda and turned to walk away.

"Babe please. It's really not what it looks like," I tried to plead with her, grabbing onto her sleeve lightly, hoping that she would take the chance to stay and listen to what really happened.

"Fine. Would you care to enlighten me?" she spoke, her anger apparent now as she jerked her arm away once again. She faced me with tears streaming from her eyes, causing pain to ripple through me. I promised her that I would never do anything to hurt her. And although I knew that I didn't do anything, the pain radiating from her made me want to shrink; it was unbearable to see my wife's beautiful face with tears.

I wanted to tell her what really happened. So badly, that every fibre of my being froze when I opened my mouth to speak. My words had suddenly vanished when she gave me the chance, reducing me to stutters.

She nodded her head slowly when she figured out that I wasn't going to say anything. It hurt so bad to have the feeling to tell the truth but it hurt even more not being able to say it. She turned around and walked towards the front door.

"I'm leaving," I heard her say before the back door closed. Our parents, who had been talking, immediately stopped and ran to the front door. I slid down against the wall and sat down, bring my hands to my face and covering it. How could I let this happen? My anger overtook me and caused me to start crying.

I heard movement beside me before I felt a hand gently patting my back. I looked over and saw Amanda with a small smile on her face as she said "everything will be alright."

"Alright?! How can you say that?! My wife just left me! You know what, get out! Now!" I yelled in her face. I wasn't usually the one to yell at anyone but after what she just did, she was lucky that she was still alive and breathing.

I walked out of the kitchen to the front door, grabbing my car keys along the way.

When I went outside, I saw that everyone was in the front yard, looking sad and confused. My mother walked up to me and placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Victoria just left, what happened?" she asked, genuinely concerned.

I looked at her and tried to control my anger. I knew it was wrong to yell at your parents, especially your mother. But when I saw her face, I lost all control of my anger.

"She left me mother," I spat, "Are you happy now?" And with that, I walked to my car, got in, and drove away, not caring where I went or who followed me.

I took a sip of my drink after I finished telling Victoria what had happened on the day she left me. She looked back at me stunned, unable to speak.
