One True Love - Chapter 14

Victoria continued to look at me without saying a word. I felt my lips tilt into a small sympathetic smile. I didn't know exactly what she was thinking about what I told her but I knew it was hard for her to accept it. When she walked in on the day it happened, it really must've looked like I actually kissed Amanda; I really must've looked like the bad guy. I chuckled slightly and she broke out of her trance.

"Do you know what I thought?" I asked her, the small smile still on my face. She shook her head and I continued, "I thought that when I was finally able to tell you what happened, I would have you back in my arms. But after seeing you with my brother today, I'm not so sure that'll happen."

She looked down, sadness covering her face. She looked back up slowly with a blank face.

"How could Amanda do that to Mike?" she asked in a small voice.

A sinister laugh left my lips and she looked at me with a confused face. "She didn't do anything to him," I said. Her eyebrows scrunched together and she asked me to explain. "They weren't dating, they were just friends. It was all an act." Her eyes widened and she covered her lips as she gasped.

"How do you know?" she asked. After taking another sip, I told her.

I pulled out of the driveway and drove. I couldn't stay at that house, knowing that my mom's biggest wish, the end of my relationship with Victoria, had just happened. Not knowing where else to go, I went to a park that I used to go to on my breaks at work.

I got out of the car and walked towards a big tree in the middle. I sat down and leaned my back on it, placing my head in my hands and letting out the tears that I was afraid to release earlier.

The world that I had grown comfortable in, since I met Victoria, had just been torn down with just one kiss. The woman who was the love of my life was gone. I didn't have anything left.

I stayed at the tree, trying my best to think of a way to fix all of this; but nothing came to mind. I heard leaves crunch beside me and looked up to find Mike walking up to me. Immediately, anger overtook my sadness and I stood up, grabbing him by the collar when he was close enough, and pushing him against the tree hard.

"Dude it's me, I just want to talk," he said, looking a little panicked.

"Why did you have to bring her?" I breathed, trying to control my anger.

"Who? Amanda?" I nodded, afraid of losing my patience if I spoke.

"She wanted to see everyone."

"Do you know she made a move on me?" I asked, feeling my anger slowly melting away. He looked at me confused before he composed himself, a knowing expression taking over.

"She's not my girlfriend if you're trying to tell me that she cheated on me." I let go of him, looking away and back at him.

"What do you mean she's not your girlfriend? You two have been together forever," I said incredulously. He sighed and sat on the grass. I followed his action.

"We're just friends─we've always been just friends. It was all an act that mom asked us to do." As he spoke, he did his best to look everywhere but at my face.

"Why would mom want you to do something like that?"

"You know how much she doesn't like Victoria. She really thought that you could do better than her. So she asked us to pretend to be a couple and get close to both of you, in hopes of one of you getting attracted to one of us and break up your relationship."

"How could you ever agree to something like this?" I asked him, feeling my anger build up again. He opened his mouth to say something but decided against it, closing it and looking at the ground with an unreadable expression in his eyes.

"I asked you a question Mike," I said, making my tone as serious as I was.

Hearing this wasn't much of a surprise, I had noticed how he'd look at her whenever she was in the room. But a small part of me wished it was just my imagination.

"What do you mean?" I asked him. He looked up and sighed.

"I'm in love with her; I've always been in love with her ever since I saw her in eighth grade."

"Eighth grade?!" I asked, my eyes widening. I was definitely not expecting this.

"Yeah. On the first day of school when I was looking for my class, I got lost. She saw me and offered to help me. I remember thinking that she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, and she still is. Everyday after that, whenever I saw her I was too shy to approach her. So I stayed back, hoping that nobody would beat me to it.

But when I was in senior year, I saw you two together at dad's restaurant, when you were in college, and I had to give up. So when mom told me about this plan, I thought that this was it; I could finally be with her, the woman I've loved for all these years. But I didn't think about what that would do to you. I was selfish."

I sat there looking at him, not knowing what to say or do.

She looked at me as if there were a lot of questions she wanted to ask. The wedding was in full swing around us, with everyone busy dancing the night away. I could tell that the music was very loud, but looking at her face I heard it as if it was at a far distance.

The sound of her dress moving as she adjusted herself brought me back to reality. She heaved a sigh and nodded before looking at me.

"Okay so why was Fae at your house when you fainted?" she asked, a blank expression on her face.

"What?" I said, feeling confused. This had nothing to do with her, why would she bring her up now?

"Why was Fae at your house?" Her eyes shone with accusation. I finished my drink before I answered her, having the feeling that this explanation could take a while.

"She was just checking how I was doing. She's been doing that since she came back," I said. She nodded but I could tell that she wasn't satisfied with my answer so I elaborated.

It had been only a day since Victoria saw Amanda kissing me and left. Eventhough it had been only a short time, with every minute that passed, it felt like we had been separated for years.

I lay in bed, staring at Vitoria's number on my phone. Tonight was going to be another night of sleeping alone, without my wife. It was really hard knowing that she was not here, where belonged, beside me.

As I was about to send her a text, a yawn escaped from my lips. I shook my head and tapped on her number; I couldn't sleep right now, I had to reach out to her. I sent her multiple texts, mostly along the lines of:

Babe, it really wasn't what it looked like.

You have to let me explain.

I love you. And that hasn't changed.

Babe, just give me a chance to explain,

hoping that would at least get her to talk to me and listen to what really happened. As soon as I saw that they were all sent, I fell asleep, a lonely feeling covering my heart.

The next morning, I woke up, ate and got ready to go over to my brother's house. The other day when he had told me about our mom's plan, he sounded genuinely sorry for participating in it. I had to apologise for letting my anger get to me. It wasn't his fault that this happened, he was only following his heart.

Every few seconds as I drove, I would look over to the passenger seat, thinking that Victoria was there. And every time, I was disappointed to find that she wasn't. I really hoped that our situation would only be temporary rather than permanent.

I got out of my car and locked it, walking towards Mike's place. When I got there, I looked through a potted plant to find a spare key and opened the door, returning the key back to its place. Assuming that he was in his room, I walked towards it, hoping that he was awake. The sound of movement on his bed made me think that he was indeed awakening and so I opened the door.

"I didn't have anyone else to talk to about my─" my words got stuck in my throat as soon as I saw the sight before me. My brother and my wife were in the same bed together. I shook myself from the shock and continued to look at them, no longer feeling like I existed in this world if she was able to forget about me that easily.

"Dude it's not what it looks like," Mike said, getting up from the bed. If only I hadn't heard those words before.

"I should've known," I replied, not believing that I actually thought my brother wouldn't go after her. I turned around and left.

"Alex it's not like that," Mike pleaded, walking behind me. I turned around and looked at him.

"What's it like then?" I asked him. He looked surprised by that question but immediately spoke.

"I went to the club yesterday and she was there. She got really drunk or something so I decided to help her out."

"So sleeping with her when she was in that state is helping her out?" I asked. He looked at me with anger beginning to build up.

"We didn't do anything. We just fell asleep on the same bed; nothing happened." I shook my head in disbelief and walked towards the door. Obviously, I was a fool to believe that he wouldn't do anything with her.

I spent the day driving around, trying not to remember the sight of them together on the bed. But no matter what I did, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I returned to my home late that night and walked into the living room to watch TV but the sound of doorbell ringing throughout the house, caused me to turn around and walk to the door, opening it to find Fae standing before me.

"How're you holding up?" she asked, smiling slightly. I sighed as I moved aside and allowed her to enter, closing the door behind me.

"Do you want something to drink?" I asked, trying to avoid her question. Her chuckle echoed throughout the house.

"Alex, I know when you're trying to avoid a question." I sighed again and immediately felt my eyes begin to sting as tears formed around my eyes. "What's wrong?" she asked.

I went into the living room and took a seat, feeling the couch sink slightly as she took a seat beside me.

"I saw Mike and Victoria in bed earlier today." She looked at me shocked and shook her head.

"That's not possible," she said, still shaking her head.

"I think I know what I saw Fae."

"But that's it. You think you know, you don't really know for sure. I think you both need to sit down and talk things out because there's probably something that you're both wrong about."

"How can you be so sure?" I asked her. She smiled slightly.

"I'm not sure, just giving you some advice."

"I need to go," she said in a small voice.

"Victoria wait." I wanted her to stay so we could try to figure things out but she obviously had other plans. I went to grab her wrist to stop her but she pulled away.

"Bye." I sat back down, frustrated. I had hoped that telling her the truth would guarantee that we'd get back together. But unfortunately that was a false hope.
