One True Love - Chapter 16

I sat beside my mom and dad, facing Alex, Mike and their parents in my parents' living room. Three days had passed since my mom told me that she was calling them. And in those three days, I had tried my best to prepare for what was to come. But as I sat before everyone, I was on edge. I didn't know what to expect from this conversation.

In those three days, Mike had constantly texted me, telling me how he felt about me and how he would feel if we were together. But I couldn't grant him that wish, my main concern was Alex.

Now, silence enveloped all of us as we continued to look around the room, none of us with the intention of beginning the conversation. The sound of Jeff clearing his throat caused all of us to look at him.

"So why did you call all of us here?"

My mom sighed and looked at me before looking back at him.

"We all need to discuss what happened between Victoria and Alex and see how we can move forward. I don't thi-"

"There's nothing to discuss. Victoria and Alex are over, she's with Mike now," Marian said, looking like she was the only smart person in the room; the only person who knew what was really going on.

"She's what?" my dad asked, looking as if someone had just slapped him in the face. I looked at Marian and frowned, earning a victorious smirk from her.

"I'm not with Mike," I said, looking at him instead of my dad. His head fell, along with his shoulders, in defeat. The sound of Marian laughing caused all of us to look at her, preparing ourselves for what she would say next.

"What's so funny?" my mom asked. She looked at me with a determined look as she answered her question.

"The fact that she's denying it."

"I'm not denying anything Marian, I'm telling the truth." I could feel my anger beginning to rise as I looked at her smug expression.

"The truth? Explain to me how that's the truth Victoria, because from what I've heard you two were definitely together yesterday."

"You told her?" I asked Mike, flabbergasted.

"I swear I didn't tell her anything, I don't know how she knows," he said, panicking.

"Wait what are you talking about?" My dad's question could be barely heard as Marian continued talking.

"Nobody had to tell me, I was there; I saw you together at the wedding."

My mouth, along with Mike's, dropped. I didn't know how he was feeling, but I was definitely trying to recover after panicking.

"If you're not together, then I don't know what it is you two have going on. Because the way I saw you looking at each other suggested that you were."

"I barely looked at him," I said. Her smile widened as she continued to talk.

"It doesn't matter how much you looked at him. Every time I saw you looking at each other, it was as if you were in love."

I took a few breaths in, trying to control myself and prevent myself from saying anything detrimental. I looked over at Alex, wondering how he was reacting to all of this, and hoping that he'd back me up since I was with him most of the time. But when my eyes landed on him, all I saw was him looking down, as if he was concentrating on thinking about something.

Knowing that nothing was going to change, I walked out of the house, unable to listen to what was being said any longer. How could Marian continue to spew lies about Mike and me? And how could Alex continue to sit there without saying a word? I shook my head and continued to walk, not knowing where exactly I was going.

The voices of everyone calling after me did nothing to stop me.

As I turned a corner down the street, I felt a drop of water fall on my face. I looked up and saw dark clouds, signalling the possibility of rain. I hadn't taken an umbrella but I was not about to go back into that house.

I took a deep breath, desperately hoping that it wouldn't rain. However, my hope was shattered a few minutes later as I came close to a small park and it began to rain very hard. I cursed under my breath and continued to walk, determined not to return.

A wooden bench underneath a tree came into view a few moments later and I decided to take a seat there. As I got closer to it, I felt warm tears fall on my face as everything which had happened came flooding to me. How did everything get so bad? I continued to walk towards the bench until I felt a pair of arms wrap around me, holding me in place.

I turned around as he pulled me closer towards him.

"Let go Alex," I said softly, sniffling slightly and placing my palm on his chest, tears running down my face along with the constant rainfall.

"I'm not giving up on you Victoria," he whispered, the rain almost drowning out his voice. I was instantly paralysed. What do I do now? A voice inside me was yelling at me to walk away and stop hurting him the way that I already have. But my heart said otherwise.

I swallowed, pushing him away and looking into his eyes. He looked back at me, pain sprinkled across his face with drops of rainwater. My heart stung looking at him. I turned around to walk away but he held onto my wrist, turning me around to face him.

He looked at my face as if he were memorizing it before sadness replaced his pain. He let go of my wrist, turning around and walking away on the dark street. Warmth surrounded my wrist where his hand had been moments before. I held onto it, looking at him as my tears began to pour once again.

I slowly turned around and began to walk. The rain poured down harder almost as if giving me a sign. You've made a mistake, I thought to myself, stopping and dropping down onto the ground.

I didn't care that I was drenching wet. I made a mistake and there was nothing I could do to take it back. I cried out loud, knowing no one could hear me. I felt myself crumble on the sidewalk I was currently sitting on.

The one man I've always loved was gone so easily and there was nothing I could do...

Suddenly I felt something like a hand resting on my shoulder. Now I was going crazy and imagining Alex behind me, I thought to myself. But the hand continued to rest on my shoulder.

I turned around, expecting to see no one there. But instead, I saw him.

Alex.

He stood beside me with his hand on my shoulder. He removed it and reached it out towards me. I looked at it and then back at him. His face was emotionless as I placed my hand in his. He slowly lifted me up and looked at me. I could see tears lining his eyes.

My eyes widened as he pulled me into him. I was immediately surrounded by the warmth that was Alex. I suddenly felt that I knew what I had to do. Although I had hurt him, I could help him take away the pain by being the wife I was before all of this happened. When he pulled back, I saw tears freely falling onto his cheeks. I hated seeing him like this...

"I came to say goodbye, " he said, bending down and placing a soft peck on my lips. I felt a tingle of warmth when he pulled away.

As he turned around, I grabbed onto his wrist as tightly as I could.

"Wait." He didn't turn around. I took a deep breath as I prepared myself.

"Alex I'm sorry. Please don't go, there's no one I'd rather be with."

His back was still facing me.

"You were always the only one who could get me to laugh on my worst days. The one who always made me feel like the world wasn't such a bad place. The one who always made me feel warm inside. The one who made me forget how to breathe whenever we kissed. The one who─"

As I was about to continue, I felt his soft lips engulf mine. I'd never felt so weak. As we kissed, I couldn’t think of anyone else I'd rather spend the rest of my life with. The man that would always own my heart was right in front of me. No one had ever made me feel the way that he always did. This was where I was destined to be; with him. Forever.

But when he pulled away, his dark expression showed that he was not thinking the same thing that I was. And when he spoke, I felt my world fall apart.

"I can't do this Victoria." And he began to walk away.
