“Fuck, I guess she was always a bitch,” Carter said under his breath as he looked out his bedroom window. “Who turns their back on you like that?”
“The spineless bitch acting like I’m the bad guy,” Christy said, sighing. She stood up from the bed and looked at the Keith Urban poster hanging on a wall.
“So you went to juvie after that?”
“Yeah, and all the bitches there used me to smuggle drugs, then I had to suck a guard’s dick to make him shut up about it. Oh, and one time he fucked me with a broken condom and I was prego when I got out. Then my dad freaked out and went out to find the CO, only to get pulled over and shot down by the police!” Christy had been breathing heavily by the time she finished her rant, which Carter could more than understand as he felt a random shiver in his back.
She wouldn’t have been in that hellhole in the first place if Paige just told the truth. It was grade-A backstabbery.
“People think I’m being extra as fuck, but they just don’t get it.” She shook her head.
“She was like that when she dumped me in middle school,” Carter said. “She acted like she fell for me too, but really it was all some sick game to her.” He puffed on a joint.
Christy sat back down on the bed. “At least she didn’t get you in juvie on purpose and ruin the rest of your fucking life.”
“Hey.” He stood up. “You weren’t there, okay? She had this dumb excuse about how my dad was dating her mom.”
“Wait,” Christy said with a hand up. “Your parents were dating? Maybe that’s why she called it off.”
It felt like steam was coming out of his ears. “It wasn’t like they were gonna marry anyway! Back then I fell so hard for her! She was playing me the whole fucking time!”
She held both of her hands up. “Okay, geez. I guess you win the Olympic medal for Most Fucked-Up By Paige.”
Rolling his eyes, he sat back down in his desk chair. “You don’t fucking know me, okay?” He smoked from his cigarette some more. He realized she had spent most of the afternoon talking. “Has anyone ever told you that you talk back too much?”
“Um, what’s that supposed to mean?”
He shrugged. “Maybe that’s why James dumped you, and why he’s kissing Paige’s ass. And that Asian girl Selah.”
“Can you just not bring up Selah Wynters again? Or James?” She lay on her back and crossed her arms.
He had to admit she looked better lying down and with her mouth closed. “Sure thing,” he murmured. He checked out her boobs rising up and down as she breathed, and he blew out some smoke.
A buzzing sound came from under her ass, so she reached down to pull out her phone. “Kylie’s feeling better. Becca might stay with her tonight.”
Carter scoffed. “Lesbos.”
She turned off her phone and sat back up again. His eyes were so focused on her cleavage that he almost didn’t catch her saying, “What is with you being obsessed about them being a thing? Sure, maybe they’re hiding it, or maybe they’re just friends. I don’t know why you gotta be annoying about it.”
He leaned back in his desk chair and continued smoking. “You just met them, so how would you know?”
“Yeah, I just met them, but you were like, ‘All girls are bi and they don’t even know it.’ I wonder if you hear yourself sometimes.”
But he just chuckled. She absolutely did not understand. Maybe he could try to change the subject so he didn’t have to explain to a clueless, stubborn bisexual like her? “That’s not how I sound,” he said. She didn’t reply to that, so he sighed. “Yeah, I do hear myself, and I think I’m right as fuck. And it’s just a theory. I’m not a psychologist.”
“But you’re also not a girl, so ‘how would you know’?” she said, poorly mimicking his light Texan accent poorly again.
He let out a long breath. He had to explain to her no matter what. “I know it sounds like bullshit, but just hear me out, okay?” As she waited, he leaned back in his chair again and puffed another smoke, feeling like a Mafia boss. “You know how girls are seen as the hot and sexy gender? Well, that’s what makes y’all stuck-up and insecure at the same time, with the makeup and shit. So y’all hang out to feel better and next thing you know, you’re scissoring each other.”
Christy burst out laughing, which sort of made him see red, but then he got caught off-guard by how sweet her laugh sounded. He grinned.
“You’re right, it does sound like bullshit,” she said as she wiped a tear from her eye.
“I mean, yeah, it’s just a theory. But I’ve known enough lesbians and bisexuals to prove it.”
“I’m surprised you even know gay girls.”
Still grinning, he smoked his joint and blew out a smoke in the shape of a ring. “Oh, you don’t know the half of it.”

In terms of weather, California was no different from Texas, except it didn’t have tornadoes or floods. Carter didn’t mind, of course. The only problem with California was the sunny days that stretched for months on end. People weren’t kidding when they said California was in a serious drought.
As he walked home from school in the midday heat, he pulled his water bottle out of his Jansport backpack and took a sip. He was so glad the school lockdown happened since it let him go home a couple of hours early. It turned out there wasn’t a bomb near the teacher’s lounge after all. Maybe some brave kid put the “bomb” there to avoid taking a test or something. Regardless, he or she was a genius.
Wiping sweat off his brow, he drew a long breath. He thought about whether he should go to the high school party that some kids at his middle school were going to. It was Friday anyway, and he needed to make new friends.
He walked up to the porch of his fancy new house and unlocked his fancy new front door. The house was a total upgrade from the piece of garbage that was his house in Texas. Even Dad’s new girlfriend was a total upgrade after a few months of being depressed about Mom’s suicide. Violet took him out on a lot of dates and was really sweet with the baked goodies she brought.
Carter went to his room, and after taking off his backpack, he fell backwards onto his bed. He wanted to take a nap before calling Dave Simons to tell him he could make it to the high school party.
Out of nowhere there were two loud female screams, one of which sounding like it belonged to Violet. Panicking, he sprinted out of his room and wandered down the hall. Some groans came from the spare bedroom that Violet sometimes slept in.
When he opened the door, Violet was naked in bed with a dark-haired woman also naked, both of them lying on opposite sides of the bed with their legs splayed out like scissors. The panting stranger reached down to where their crotches met, at the same time Violet looked over her shoulder to see Carter and gasped. She scooted away from the other woman and scrambled to the floor to hide behind the bed.
His Friday was ruined instantly.
“Carter, wait!” Violet called, but he was closing the door quietly. Then he turned and went to his bedroom and closed his door too.
Several vague emotions were running through his mind, but he couldn’t pinpoint a single one. As he sat on the bed, he tried to force himself to cry, but no tears came out. His breathing growing faster, he crammed his fists against his closed eyes and tried to erase from his brain the picture of Dad’s girlfriend and the brunette on the blankets. That was how women did it? Who was the brunette? How could Violet do this while dating his dad? How long had she been seeing that woman?
Carter had such high hopes that he wouldn’t have to deal with his dad’s depression anymore.
The door creaked open, and he turned to see Violet with her clothes on. The image of her naked seared his entire brain as she closed the door behind her and sat down next to him.
“Carter, I’m so sorry,” she said, sniffling.
He kept his eyes above her neck so he would stop remembering her body underneath the clothes. “Who is that?” he asked.
“She’s my best friend.”
“But...but why are you with my dad? How could you do this to him? And you’re not straight?” His voice had risen by the end of the last sentence and he stood up with his hands clenched into fists.
“Look, I wasn’t dating her before. Well, not till today. But I was going to tell Owen later!” she said quickly. “And I’m bisexual.”
He just shook his head. He had no more questions, comments, or even words.
“You have every right to be upset. If you’re going to tell your father then you can--”
“You bet I will!” he screamed, surprising himself. “I’m gonna tell him this whole time you were a dyke and you were cheating on him! You didn’t even tell him before you did...that!” He gestured at the direction of the spare bedroom and took out his phone from his backpack.
Violet started crying. He ignored her as he dialed Dad’s number. While waiting for Dad to pick up, Carter knew it was going to hurt to tell him after dealing with Mom’s death.
But Dad should’ve been ashamed he hadn’t known he was dating a nasty queer.
Carter gripped the stem of the bouquet of roses tightly in his hand as he walked toward the football stadium. He estimated that the game would start in several minutes, so he picked up the pace.
The plan was that before halftime, the whole football team, all of them friends of Dave’s, would hold up a huge sign asking Izzy, Carter’s gorgeous and amazing girlfriend, if she’d go to Homecoming with him. At first the idea sounded like a promposal that people more popular than Carter would do. But Dave was way too generous and insistent that Carter had to give in.
Plus, the plan perfectly showed how much he cared about Izzy. To start off, she was way prettier than Paige Connelly, his first love and first heartbreak. Izzy was actually real with him, and despite her flaws, he could never stop thinking about her light brown hair, her blue eyes, her snorts whenever she giggled too hard, even her weird collection of sunglasses in all the colors of the rainbow.
After Carter entered the venue, he texted Dave, Where are u?
Right when Carter hit send, a hand slapped his shoulder, but unlike the rest of Dave’s shoulder-slaps, this one was a lot harder. Carter turned to see his friend’s anxious brown eyes.
“You need to see something,” Dave said in a serious voice.
“But the game’s just starting--”
“You might not wanna ask her, at all.”
Did Carter hear him right? Was Izzy cheating? Who the fuck was the prick? “Show me,” Carter said through his teeth.
Dave jogged toward the back of the bleachers with Carter keeping up with him. All the things Carter could think about were the signs that he overlooked; sometimes she’d be busy without telling him why, or she’d hide her phone from him. He thought asking her why she did those things would be invading her privacy.
But since he didn’t, his heart was getting fucked over once again.
Dave slowed down to a stop at a secluded spot deep in the deserted area behind the bleachers. And after he stepped aside, Carter saw Izzy embracing and kissing her best friend Emma.
What Izzy was doing was much, much worse than cheating.
Without thinking, he stomped toward them and pulled Emma away from Izzy. “You fucking lesbos!” he yelled. “How long was this going on?”
With an angry look on her face, Emma ran up to him and slapped him across the face. “She was gonna tell you tonight! Right?” she asked as she turned to Izzy.
Carter waited as Izzy started taking long breaths and gripped her knees. It was as if several minutes passed, until she stood back up and walked up to him.
And she said, “I’d never fall for a fucking idiot like you.”
Carter threw the bouquet at the ground. “Yeah? And I think I know why! ‘Cause you’re fucked up! All of you gays are fucked up!”
She glanced at the bouquet at his feet, then looked back up at him. “You’re such a dumbass. You couldn’t even tell until you had to literally see us Frenching.”
“Then why date me, huh?” Carter replied. “What’s the point?”
Izzy’s eyes turned to Emma, and the girls smiled. “I didn’t want anyone to know about us, so I went out with you,” Izzy said with her eyes still on Emma. “But I don’t think I give a shit anymore.”
The fire inside him growing bigger, he kicked the bouquet at their direction. “Fuck you! Just--”
A lump formed in his throat, and he turned and ran. For the first time ever since his mom’s death, he cried. When he was a few blocks away from the school, he fell onto a bench at a bus stop and let the tears fall.
He really did think Izzy was the one. Her lies were so good. All of the sweet things she said to him meant nothing. She was with her best friend, and he was so hilariously blind.
His first high school girlfriend being a fucking dyke was exactly what he needed to start off his freshman year.
