During my first year at my new school, there was a sign up for next years class council. A meeting was held at lunch far those who were interested. I thought, why the heck not. I got to the meeting, and the teacher said to put my name down and put a check mark nest to in if you would like to run for president. For some reason I thought she meant “oh if you’re just thinking about it and have no intention of winning because you’re new, then put a check mark.” So I did.
I sat through the meeting, and after it I went to see who was running. It turned out to be less people than I thought, just last year’s president and one other girl. Three in total.
Here’s the problem tho. The previous president was very popular, and the other girl did FFA and was good at the whole leadership thing. Plus she’d most likely have the entire FFAs votes. This lead to me having the least possible chance of winning. Ever.
A little while later and I find out that all the candidates have to give a speech to their entire class. All 75 of us 😂
I have never EVER given a speech. Let alone to the entire freshman class?! I gotta admit I was questioning my “ohh this seems fun, lemme try it” personality for a bit.
Even more time later and I found out that the girl had dropped out. Now I had to lose to one person… even worse. That’s when I started getting a lot of campaign help, because I found out that not many people wanted the guy to be president again. We made posters and hung them up (with the principals permission ofc) and I made custom pins with my slogan on them. I was getting excited, it seemed like I had a good chance of winning.
THEN, the guy dropped out too.
I WON BY DEFAULT?!
Ughh I was so frustrated. I was looking forward to seeing my hard work pay off and people actually vote for me. Instead, they didn’t have a choice. Luckily most people said they’d vote for me anyway, so at least I knew I would’ve won. Maybe that’s why he quit? He didn’t wanna lose? Idk why, but it was annoying.
So now I had to give a speech to everyone by myself.. no one else. Just me. 🫠
My campaign team helped a lot, I even met with my friend and former (emphasis on the former part) crush early before school so he could help.
In the end, I got a lot of support from my classmates and now I’m sophomore class president of the year 2023. At first I had no hope that I’d win, at all. I thought it’d be fun to run. But here we are.
Maybe there’s a life lesson in there… uh try things even if you think they’ll go badly?
