some Ciel/Lizzy thoughts
I’ve been remembering one of my favorite cielizzy moments and I just, love this OTP so much that I have to ramble.
I mean, on one hand, we have Ciel who wants to keep Lizzie safe always, at all costs. What hits me the most about this is just how far Ciel is willing to go to do so. He has basically dedicated his life to carry out his revenge, that is his north, yet he has never hesitated to jump in the way of danger for her. Whether it be to save her from a bear or to shield her from a rush of water, whenever Lizzy is in immediate danger Ciel reacts instinctively, and (as far as we know) he doesn’t even spare a thought to Sebastian saving him in turn.
In those moments IMO he isn’t thinking that he can afford to shield her because Sebastian will certainly save their necks on the brink of time (as I’ve seen some suggest); he is simply acting because:
And I could go on and on about that forever, but another thing that has always stood out to me is that Ciel’s desire to protect Lizzy goes beyond keeping her physically unharmed. I feel he wants to keep her innocent, carefree, and pure, too; he doesn’t want her to delve into his damaged world and neither does he want her to worry about him.
And I feel that it shows in all sorts of little ways; from how he made sure she wouldn’t see the brand he’s got on his back, to how he shielded her eyes so she wouldn’t see Sebastian’s carnage back in the Campania.
What Ciel hasn’t realized IMO is that aside from being able to fend for herself, Lizzy is also much stronger than he gives her credit for — emotionally.
(image heavy post below the cut!)
And of course, I don’t only mean that Lizzy notices a lot of things that she pretends to be unaware of purely for his sake:
But that this is the girl who faced zombies head-on and was still able to be her bright self afterward:
The girl who is plenty aware that there’s something wrong with him, something he’s hiding from her - and is still able to keep smiling for him because she knows that for now, she should pretend to be blissfully unaware since she acknowledges that he is doing his best not to worry her.
Moreover - she’s been this way (‘warm like the golden sun’, in yana’s words) all along while knowing that he’s the queen’s watchdog (!!!)
If you ask me, she probably knows way more than Ciel (or any of us, really) thinks about his line of work, because I don’t think Francis is the type to let her be in the dark when she’s meant to join a family like his.
So basically, while these two have TONS of stuff to sort out and TONS of things to discover about each other, the one thing I’m sure of is that Lizzy is going to keep taking Ciel by surprise over and over because he seems to still be stuck in the way he has always perceived her (carefree, innocent like a child, naive). And I’m also willing to bet that Lizzy isn’t going to crumble no matter what truths she may discover from here on out because just like Ciel desperately wants to keep Lizzie safe physically and emotionally - Lizzy wants the same thing.
And while she used to go about it the wrong way, she still manages to liven him up one way or another.
How about taking a good rest occasionally?
Like for example back in the Circus arc, where Ciel revived some pretty traumatizing stuff and made some pretty twisted choices — and yet the arc ended with Ciel sleeping peacefully for “the first time in a long time” thanks to having spent the day getting pushed around by Lizzy (and then Soma and Agni) lol
So I feel that while Ciel may be becoming more and more cynical and ruthless, he has got certain people that are exceptions to the rule and Lizzy is at the front and center of them. In fact, IMO Lizzy is literally his strongest link to his humanity and “light” in general.
WHICH finally (!!!) brings me to my favorite moment, because to me it’s like the embodiment of all this rambling.
It’s been YEARS and I’m still in love with it! Just when Ciel was losing himself, about to have a mini-meltdown right then and there, Lizzy notices something is wrong, calls out to him and it’s precisely her call that brings him back. This is all kinds of wonderful but just look at how Ciel reacts to it. He gasps out her name and grasps her shoulder - and I don’t know you, but to me, that gesture didn’t only read as gratitude but also as Ciel literally holding her to ground himself back to the present, back to reality.
Right there, to me, Lizzy effectively grounded him. And this ties so well with the Book of Murder side-story. Actually, ALL of this does! Not only is Lizzy basically on a quest to save Ciel’s soul from ‘ice’ and ‘darkness’:
There is also the literal juxtaposition between her and Sebastian and what his and Ciel’s world stands for. Because while Ciel chose to live immersed in winter/darkness (and Lizzy will have to face this - Ciel’s own ‘evil blood’ - sooner or later in canon, too), Sebas (’The Ice King’) outright called Lizzy the ‘daughter of the sun’:
Which is so, SO important! But more than that, there was ALSO a reference to Ciel wanting Lizzy to stay innocent and pure, untainted by his world:
(in the next page he says that the roses were beautiful, and the gardens warm)
So yeah, these two may not have a happy ending in store for them given the kind of manga Kuroshitsuji is, but they have a long way to go in regards to each other before they get to their final destination, and if there’s another thing I’m sure of - along with “Lizzy is going to keep taking Ciel by surprise over and over” - is that Lizzy isn’t going down without a fight.
I really can’t wait to see where Yana will take them next, especially if the 2 Ciels theory comes to fruition because boy talks about an interesting twist!
