Back to my usual agenda aka Lizzy though THOSE PANELS.
Like, what panels did Yana pick for her Paula flashback??
First, the day Lizzy’s life turned upside down. Lizzy losing Ciel—and his brother, and her uncle and aunt and people she held dear. Notice how she’s holding the handkerchief she made Ciel for his birthday, so there’s no mistake about why Lizzy’s crying right there. She’s even wearing the same dress!
Then, we have Lizzy deciding to let go of her high-heels in order to stick to low-heeled shoes. It represents the sacrifices Lizzy has made—and is willing to make, for our!Ciel.
And third, we have Lizzy from Chapter 2; the day she went to visit ours! Ciel and broke his ring. Again, Yana even went through the trouble of drawing her wearing the exact same dress.
This really stood out to me because Yana picked which scenes to use very carefully, and pretty much managed to show a good, brief rundown of the timeline of Lizzy losing Ciel and—unknowingly—getting ours! Ciel back.
Yana could have chosen to show us flashbacks of Lizzy’s happy times with r! Ciel—of which there are plenty. But no, instead of doing that, Yana chose to remind us of what came for Lizzy after losing r!Ciel.
In the years that have gone by, Lizzy has changed. She has gone through some incredible character growth—and a good chunk of it has been motivated by ours! Ciel. She has gone from discarding her nature to hiding it to owning it. She is not the same girl r! Ciel knew, and r! Ciel is not the same boy she loved so dearly, either.
Just like Lizzy and r!Ciel shared a great many things together—so have ours! Ciel and Lizzy, and it’s that which Yana chose to emphasize. Yana chose to remind us that this smile right here:
Happened because of o!Ciel. Because of what Lizzy feels for o!Ciel.
And right afterward, totally on cue, Yana delivers this panel:
The writing can’t be any clearer. Lizzy may be where she is ‘supposed’ to be; but that’s not where her heart wants to be. It was once upon a time, but not anymore; not after everything.
And seriously, with every passing chapter, I’m more and more eager to see Yana exploring Lizzy’s conflict.
