Sebastian’s face when he hears Lizzie speak though. Look at it. This is a thing of beauty and I’ll write a thousand pages about it when the chapter comes out.
That and, Lizzie’s entrance: her low heeled shoes. Which are a symbol of the sacrifices she has always been ready to make four O!Ciel. Of how much she loves, treasures him, and wants nothing but the best for him.
I believe in my girl and I believe in her relationship with and her feelings for o!Ciel. And I’m also here for all the delicious drama and revelations this is going to bring because both Lizzy and O!Ciel will have to face themselves and each other and it’s only going to bring them closer in the end.
God. O!Ciel being so shocked that he can’t even say her name in one fell swoop. “Eliza… beth…” I can’t wait to see all the close-ups of his pained and hurt face next chapter.
Bring it on Yana I’ve been waiting years for this.
Those low shoes could be to show her feelings towards either “Ciel”. However, I think she might have also worn them for two other main reasons:
- She probably didn’t bring much with her to Sphere Music Hall when she ran away from home, which also explains why she’s wearing the same dress as when she fought Sebastian.
- She’s prepared to fight, and the low shoes are probably best for it.
Thank you for your opinion! I see where you’re coming from but I have to disagree.
While the two bullet points you bring forward are logical explanations, this is Yana we’re talking about here. Every panel she uses is filled with intent, so we would be doing her a disservice if we don’t explore it.
Which is why I’m only going to focus on your first point:
I feel Yana has clearly differentiated O!Ciel and Ciel in regards to Lizzy.
And she did it in the last Lizzy flashback, as well.
This image right here summarizes it best, I believe:
The reason Lizzy started wearing low-heeled shoes instead of following the heels trend is that O!Ciel wanted to be seen as an adult even though he looks and has the stature of a child. Lizzy didn’t want to make his short height even more obvious. As you can see, there is no correlation between her choice and fighting to physically protect o!Ciel.
It ties in instead with a desire to support o!Ciel emotionally. So that right there isn’t a sacrifice she made for Ciel. She made it for O!Ciel specifically. And as such: what they symbolize, they symbolize O!Ciel because he is what inspired her choice. Her feelings for O!Ciel are what inspired her.
And that is something we must not forget.
That said, through this arc and in this specific instance Lizzy is indeed choosing to protect Ciel rather than O!Ciel. But that’s where the symbolism comes to play, because it shows were her heart truly lies.
Her duty as his rightful fiancée and her feelings for Ciel as her beloved childhood friend (and how betrayed she must feel by O!Ciel and all the manipulation Bravat and the others did) may have Elizabeth on Ciel’s side for the time being, but she is miserable.
And that’s why we need to look at all the clues Yana is laying about Lizzy’s real feelings. Because this is a woman who is a hawk when it comes to symbolism and foreshadowing.
