Emily’s P. O. V:
What in the world was happening to me? Ever since I met that boy I hadn't felt normal at all. I was pondering over the matter sitting in my car when I heard a knock at my window.
I had only heard of, ‘Speak of the devil and he shall appear’ but I just thought of this devil and he appeared! There stood Jason asking me for a ride home. What he was doing there, so far from school or home for that matter? I had no idea and I had no intention of asking. I gestured him to get in the car and boy, it was an awkwardly silent ride home.
I have to put an end to this once and for all. It’s not bad to bring your naughty side out if necessary, Emily. My thoughts were interrupted by Jason apologizing for trying to kiss me in the movie room.
I’ve had enough of this.
“SHUT UP JASON!” I snapped. “You no longer see me as a teacher do you? You look at me as a touching material and as a toy, right? I’m such an easy target, aren’t I? You make a move on me whenever you like, then apologise like it never happened and you think I won’t mind, don’t you? If you really love me like you say, come with me right now, we’ll get a separate apartment and we’ll live together, shall we?”
He immediately said, “No, I can’t, not now.”
Oh my God! Thank you Lord Almighty for finally imparting some sense into this kid! Hallelujah!
“See! I knew it. What you have are not true feelings, you just have a crush which happens to most boys of your age. A few years from now and I’ll probably be a hazy memory in a corner of your mind. At the very least, these feelings which you think are true now will never be the same,” I said.
My mental celebration was only short-lived as Jason waited for me to come down from my frantic state and calmly said, “I only said not now. I’ll get a job, marry you properly and then we’ll live together, not in some apartment but in my own house. In your eyes, I may not seem truly loving, but I’m not a playful idiot.”
Let’s get this over with, Emily. Make those long hours you spent practicing in front of the mirror count.
I said with an equal composure in my voice, “Alright you have a point there and I admit that I haven’t even figured out my feelings for you so I draw a line from a distance. You said that by the time you finish school, you will make me your girlfriend right? And you’re pretty strong at heart and you like challenges, don’t you? So how about we raise the stakes, huh? Within one month, steal my heart completely or I will resign and leave the school and forget about you.”
“What?! This isn’t something to wager on! Think about the other students, most of them would be failing in math if it wasn’t for you. What will they do?” exclaimed Jason.
There, gotcha! That’s it Emily! You have him in point blank range. Bring out the naughty side just like you planned.
“I don’t care. This is a game for me. They’ll do well without me,” I said with a malevolent smirk. (A lie. Of course I do care a lot about the other students). His face fell even more. I knew that I was hurting him but I just couldn’t help it.
Yes! That’s it, bring out the evil aura just like you practised.
With that I left him standing speechless in the middle of nowhere as I got into my car and drove off.
The moment I stepped foot into my room, I ruminated about everything that happened and it took me that and nothing else to convince myself what a stupid person I was.
What have I done? Oh my God! What on earth have I done?!
I could have firmly told him to stay away, but I didn’t. Putting a time limit was proof in itself that I was being won over. It was not that I had no feelings for the boy but I was afraid of what others would think.
Must stay strong, must not waver.
Just then the clover that Jason had given me which I had preserved and laminated, caught my eye and all those memories played through my mind. I took it in my hand and drifted off to my own little dream-world where only Jason, I and happiness existed.
Carries P. O. V:
I was about to enter the room when I saw Emily looking at the clover Jason had given her with solemn, longing eyes.
Poor sis, her position and falling for that boy, she must be torn inside. Just be a little brave Emily. I thought as I closed the door quietly without going in.
“Is Em alright? She seemed a bit down when she came home from school today. Is everything okay?” asked Kate sounding worried.
“Uh…yeah. She said that she was tired as she had lots of work at school,” I lied.
“Alright, but isn’t she coming to eat dinner?”
“She doesn’t feel like eating now”
“But this dish is her favourite, well then you can have her share,” Kate said and we sat down to eat.
At first, I thought that Jason was just looking for the Holy Grail, chasing behind Emily. She didn’t seem to budge at all. But in the light of recent events, I was sure that she felt at least something towards the boy. I was also damn sure that she was being unforthcoming only because the relationship between a teacher and her student was something that was happily frowned upon, at least in that area.
Personally, I couldn’t understand why one would make a big deal out of such a simple matter. They were just two normal people who like all others fell for each other. I mean, it’s not like a human beings have control over who they fall in love with.
On the other hand, thinking about it, Emily’s reluctance was also acceptable because she, for one, loved being able to teach math to others. Even if a single rumour about her and Jason got out, that would jeopardise her career.
However, even if that was the case, she should have just said that to Jason and should have asked him to wait.
Sis sure is a strange person…
“Um… There’s nothing wrong with today’s dinner, is there?” asked Kate with earnest eyes, waiting for an answer because I had just eaten one spoonful of her special rice preparation after which I had zoned out.
“Oh, no. The food’s absolutely great. I just had a lot on my mind that I zoned out…” I trailed off smiling. Sis sure had some long days coming at her.
