Episode 1 Continued - The Deal with the Devil
Sebastian set the plates in front of us, smiling softly. "For dinner we have some green tea served with a beef calzone and a side of cobb salad. Made specially for our master with freshly made bread, sliced beef from the neighborhood deli, and tomato sauce made directly from our garden."
I pressed my fork in the calzone, watching lazily as is spilled out tomato sauce. "Seriously, when do you have time for this?"
"Well, I was busy this morning with your servants." He shot a look in the garden where all four of them stood. They all stiffened, and their cheeks reddened. Sebastian looked back down to me. "One of them almost burned the kitchen down. But I made everything myself despite their efforts."
"Oh, so delicious!" count Meacham said from the other side of the table, clearly not hearing our conversation. "It's simply divine! Such great servants you have, my lord!"
I watched in disgust as he tore through the calzone and chewed it loudly, and I looked down at my plate, scoffing. "These men disgust me so. They eat like pigs."
"And you don't, my lord?" Sebastian said.
I shot him a look, lightly chewing my salad before I pointed a fork accusingly at him. "Don't make me start. I hated taking all those classes from you, but you insisted."
He snickered a little, but I ignored him.
"How did you manage all this, anyway? You're simply unique, if you ask me."
"Despite all efforts of the staff," he said then, bowing before me, "despite them burning down the kitchen, cooking eggs in the sink, and mixing bleach with ammonia, I would have to say I found it very easy, my lord. Cooking is an art, and I am perfect at almost everything. If I couldn't deal with that, in the very least, what kind of butler would I be?"
I gave him a look, finishing my meal at last before I gazed up at the count. "How was it, sir? Did you like it?"
"Oh, yes, very delicious!" count Meacham said. "I would have this every day if I could!"
"Look at that, Sebastian," I said, smirking, "you're being complimented by the pig."
"Assuredly, my lord," he answered, still smiling.
I chuckled coldly. "Well... the game is still in play, and I would like to continue."
He bowed before me. "Yes, my lord."
I stood from the table then, smiling over at the count. "Come, count Meacham, we have more things to discuss."
He stood from his seat and ran over to me. "Yes, my lord. Coming right away!"
I glanced over at Sebastian as he kept his eyes to me. "Prepare his room, Sebastian. Something tells me he's going to want to retire early tonight."
He smiled. "Yes, my lord."
"And don't forget," I gazed up at him with a small smile, "warmest welcome, Sebastian. We don't want our guests in a cold room, do we?"
He kept the smile. "Never, my lord. I shall prepare it right away."
"Good." I walked off, feeling the count follow me.
Minutes later, we were back in the dining room, and I casually set up the chess board as count Meacham shuffled in his seat uncomfortably.
"Are you ready for the game?" I wondered.
He sat up a little. "Actually... I was wondering if I could step out for a moment. You see... I would like a little fresh air, is all."
"Fine," I said, waving him off. "Be quick. I'm not one who likes waiting."
"Yes, my lord." He stood and bowed quickly, gazing up with a kind smile before he left the room.89Please respect copyright.PENANAKHRHtQAIub
