Janet’s P. O. V:
George and I were returning home from a snack corner when Kenneth along with Emmett, one of the most feared boys in both the school and the college and another guy who was not from our school confronted us.
Emmett ordered us to follow them and we just obeyed because we knew that protest was not an option when it came to Emmett. The boys led us into an alley near the snack corner we had just left and stood there blocking our way out.
"Look, this obviously has something to do with me but the girl is innocent. So let her go home," George said to Emmett.
"What? Oh no you don't. She's the reason we're in this mess, you fool. And now she has to pay for her mistake," countered Kenneth.
“Wait a minute! My mistake? No one asked Lindsey to come to our class and pick on Amy in the first place so go and yell at her,” I snapped.
“Watch your mouth when you face us, you rat! Lindsey will come there all she wants and I’ll come there to beat the hell outta you. What can you possibly do, huh? Go and cry to your homeroom teacher?” he mocked.
"Hey! I wasn't the one who went from class to class looking for trouble!" I shouted back.
"Silence!" growled Emmett and we all shrank back.
Emmett agreed to let me go while Kenneth protested. “I’ll be fine go now,” said George, but his eyes said otherwise. I reluctantly left and went, not to my house but to Jason’s.
George’s P. O. V:
“I’ll be fine go now,” I said to Janet even though I knew things were gonna get ugly. Emmett spoke up after Janet left. “You see, I hate it when my gang tastes defeat so let’s settle this.”
“Okay do whatever you want,” I said eager to get the matter done and dusted.
“Fight ME. The first person to fall down loses. Don't worry. Kenneth and Tony here won't interfere," he said pointing to the third guy. "After we're finished, get the hell out of here. Got it?” he asked.
Maybe I spoke too soon. I thought as I nodded reluctantly.
His punches were really hard but not even close to Jason’s. I didn't even try to fight back because that would guarantee me some serious injury because Emmett did live up to his reputation after all. He was really strong just falling short of Jason's strength.
I lost eventually as Emmett caught me off guard and sent me crashing on the ground with a punch to my face. Just when they were about to leave, Emmett spoke again. “That boy you mentioned to Kenneth in class today… Um… Jason is his name huh? Well, he’s next.”
I could not say anything but feel sorry for Emmett. He was about to make a mistake he was gonna regret. Most people knew Jason as a troublemaker who accidentally had academic and extracurricular talent. Everyone also thought that he was a simple pushover who did not know how to fight. But in reality, Jason was someone who could study incredibly well and was also an intermediate level boxer and a street-fighting champion. He kept those activities under wraps by going out to fight only after midnight while during the day; he put up a comedian camouflage.
Jason’s P. O. V:
I felt like I was the worst loser in the world. I left the place with Amy giving me a mocking smile. On my way home, I was stopped by Janet who came running towards me looking panic-stricken.
“George got into trouble…” she said gasping for air. I was about to laugh but stifled it and said “I’m sure he can handle himself.”
“…with Emmett,” she finished.
That zipped up my mouth. I had heard from others that Emmett was regarded as the most dangerous boy in the school. He was a college student. I never had a chance to meet or to know him but as far as I knew, George was in deep, deep trouble.
"Where are they?" I asked her.
"Um... You know that little diner run by that old lady?"
"Old Ms Lisa's diner?"
"Yeah. They're fighting in the little alley right across the diner."
I sent Janet home and went to the place where she said that they met the boys. George was not there. I guessed the fight ended, so I went to George’s house.
“Do you carry a trouble magnet or something?” echoed an irritated voice as I walked up the porch. I knocked on the door and George’s mom opened it. The moment she saw me, she started her rant. “Go in and have a look at what the idiot has done to his face,” she said and left me alone. I entered George’s room and found him lying on the bed with a bruised face and a black eye.
“Name the guys,” I said bluntly clenching my fists in anger.
“Whoa! Hold your horses there Jason. It was a one on one fight and I lost. The matter is settled now,” he quickly answered sensing my anger.
“Alright. I’m gonna go,” I said and left but felt a bit guilty as a friend for not being there for him.
"If Emmett comes looking for trouble again, I'll face him personally," I said to myself as I went outside George's house.
Janet’s P. O. V:
The next day, Kenneth came to the class looking for George and Jason. Geez, couldn’t he just drop the issue? Luckily both of them were not in the class.
Oops! Spoke too soon!
Just then Jason came in. He saw that Kenneth was looking for him and stood at the doorway to see what Kenneth would do.
Just as Kenneth was looking around for Jason, he spotted the scrawny Luke trying to get out of the classroom unnoticed. Luke was always the first to run away from a fight scene. Kenneth ran towards him and grabbed him by his collar and asked, "Hey, who the hell is Jason, huh? Where the hell is he?"
"Jason's a boy in our class," answered Luke as if Kenneth didn't know that. Kenneth held Luke by his hair and slapped him. "I know that, idiot. Where is he?" he asked with anger dripping from his voice.
"I really don't know. Please let me go, I'm not even worth your punches," begged Luke. "Ah, get lost you little bug. You would've been better off being a fraidy cat than a boy," mocked Kenneth, tossing Luke aside.
“I’m standing right here, numbnut. Who the hell’re you and why’re ya lookin for me?” asked Jason in a surprisingly calm tone. Things were sure to get ugly, so I tried to make Kenneth leave which obviously was a bad idea because he closed his fist and sent a heavy punch right to my face. I closed my eyes bracing myself for the impact. I felt two strong hands pushing me in some direction.
Wait! The punch didn’t hurt. I opened my eyes and saw Jason standing in front of me holding his jaw in pain! And I thought he never cared about me!
“You were going to hit my best friend this hard?” he asked. Before Kenneth could hit Jason, Lindsey came and asked Kenneth to leave saying that the order came from Emmett so Kenneth obliged. Before he left he said,” Let’s see you pull off this same indifferent face in front of Emmett.” To that, Jason replied in a mocking tone, “Yeah we’ll see what that Emma guy can do”
Ugh! Why was he being so confident and stubborn over that trivial matter as to insult Emmett? It felt nice to know that he was willing to fight for me and I felt like I was given royal treatment when he mentioned me as his best friend but I didn’t want him to get hurt.
During lunch hour, Lindsey called me to go somewhere with her. I followed her reluctantly as she and I weren’t actually simpatico in any respect. She led me to an isolated area of the school where no one went.
Okay, so I’m in big trouble.
In front of me stood the whole eenie-meanie-girl gang, i.e. Lindsey, Stacey and two of their minions. The gang was known to completely humiliate anyone who dared to disrespect them. I had seen so many girls crying helplessly after getting beaten up by those four girls.
In case violence wasn’t an option, the four made sure that the girl in question was completely ruined in some other way. Even in the previous week, an innocent girl got dumped in public by her boyfriend of four years because the gang spread rumours that she was dating other guys behind his back.
“I’m gonna ask you nicely,” started Lindsey shaking me out of my thoughts. “Apologise to us for poking your nose in where it was none of your business. If you don’t understand, lemme make it more clear. I’m talking about interrupting Kenneth in class,”
Seriously? Is this girl normal?
“Um….. I don’t think I did anything wrong so I’m NOT gonna apologise,” I replied raising my voice.
Bad call! Lindsey’s punch was worse than Kenneth’s slap. I fell on to the ground with no plans of getting up. I heard Lindsey say, “Take off her dress” to Stacey. Within moments my uniform was in Stacey's hands. Lindsey crouched in front of me and said softly, “Just say you’re sorry and I’ll let you go”
Alright Janet, time to let your guard down.
“I’m sor” “THAT’S ENOUGH” shouted Jason followed by George who ran up to me and covered me up with his shirt.
Ah! My knights in shining armours! How they knew about my problem? I had no idea. Besides, there was no need to know, was there?
Lindsey got up to Jason and shouted,” Who do you think you OOOOFF-” and fell down with a busted lip?? Looking up at Jason, I saw the girl's blood dripping from his fist! Unfortunately she didn’t learn her lesson and spat at Jason only to get knocked out by another killer punch to her face.
