Sawyer
An alarm was going off somewhere nearby. My mind was too foggy to make out the obnoxiously high pitched lyrics. They were jumbled and disfigured.
Dim light shined through the slits between the curtens. It wasn't much light, but when I combined it with my raging headache, it became blinding.
I threw my arm over my eyes and pinched them closed. Whatever I was laying on wasn't comfortable enough to be a bed, but I didn't have it in me to move. Comfortable or not, there was a shit ton of elephants stomping around in my head like they'd been training for the grand march.
Fuck.
"Someone shut that goddamn alarm off."
The voice didn't register as familiar at first. Then it hit me. I cracked one eye open just in time to see Toni disentangling herself from Kaylee and myself. Her legs were twisted in mine and her arms were wrapped around Kaylee's waist.
"I swear on my life, heads will roll if--"
"Okay, okay," Toni said sliding off of the couch. "I'm turning it off."
"About fucking time."
"Speaking of time, I'm going to be late for work." Toni said. She chewed on her bottom lip, staring sadly at her phone.
"Don't go then." I suggested quietly. I sure as hell didn't want to get up and face reality. Falling back asleep sounded like heaven right now. "We can sleep in, watch some movies and order food."
Kaylee peeked one eye open to look at me. "I like his idea."
"I can't," she said starting towards the hallway. "It's the first day in the new building. Daddy's expecting me to be there. I have to set a good example."
"And I have to get the fuck back to sleep." Kaylee said darkly. She grabbed one of the couch cushions and held it over her face to block out the light.
I second the motion.
Toni was already in her bedroom before I could make a more compelling arguement. I could hear the water running and the faint sound of shitty pop music playing.
Screw it. I'm going back to sleep.
I was just starting to drift back into sweet unconsciousness when someone shook my shoulder. Fuck. Motherfucking hell. There was no relief from this hangover.
"Sawyer."
"What?" I grumbled.
"I want to talk to you about letting Kaylee stay here until she can afford her own place." Toni said. She was leaning over me, her attire consisting of a dark pink dress falling to her knees and banish five inch stilettos.
"Mhm."
"I know it's a lot to ask and it'll be more difficult hiding our secret.." she paused. "But she's my best friend. She would do it for me if the roles were reversed."
"Mmgh."
"If we don't let her stay here, she'll sleep in her car for the next two months," she said and shook my arm again. "I wouldn't be able to live with myself."
"She can stay, whatever."
Had I been fully awake and coherent, I probably would have put up an argument. I would have made my case. Weighed the pros and cons so she would understand what a horrible fucking idea it was to let her stay here. We weren't even convincing out in public. How the fuck were we suppose to put up a show at home?
As things were, I wasn'tfully awake or even remotely coherent. I just wanted to fucking sleep and I would have agreed to just about anything to make that happen.
I felt the soft brush of her lips against my cheek. "Thank you so much!"
The next thing I heard was the front door click shut. Finally.
A ruff kick to the shin jerked me awake. I sat up, turning my head left and right in a dazed manner. I glared at the culprit when I saw her sitting on the cushion next to me.
It was later in the day, I could tell by the sunlight coming in through the slit in the curtens. Maybe late afternoon. I'm sure I could have slept longer, but at least my head no longer weighed as much as a gorilla. Still, I glared at her through narrowed eyes for having the audacity to wake me up.
"What?"
"You didn't look like you were breathing." Was her genius response.
"So you decided to kick me?"
"Yup."
I started to stretch my arms, shaking my head at her. "I don't want to get up."
"We could order pizza and just stay like this all day." She said hopefully.
If anyone else had said it, I would have assumed they were joking. Not her. She was dead serious, and that was fine with me. "Okay."
A wide smile stretched across her face. She reached for her phone on the coffee table, nearly falling off the couch and face planting onto the hard wood floor. "Same as last time?"
"How about meat lovers?"
She looked at me like I was her soul mate and she'd been searching lifetimes for me. "Fuck yeah."
She ordered the pizza, tossing her phone onto the opposite end of the couch after ending the call. Like a star fish, she spread out across three cushions, her legs ending up in my lap.
Even in swet pants, her legs looked damn fine.
"Do you mind?"
She squinted her brown eyes at me, wiggling her toes obnoxiously. "Nope, not at all."
I rolled my eyes, deciding to leave it be for now. I had a feeling I'd need to save my energy for further arguements. Toni wouldn't be back until dinner time. There was hours between then and now.
"If you were going to commit murder, how would you go about doing it?" She asked. Arms crossed behind her head, she looked the epitome of comfortable. She looked at me expectantly.
"That's a strange--"
"Just answer the question."
I thought about it for a moment, one idea standing out more than the others. "Throw them into a pool and drop an electrical wire into the water."
She nodded in approval. "Very creative, I like it."
"And you?"
She shook her head. "Nope, not how this game works. You have to ask me a different question."
Okaaay.
"If you were rich, had an endless bank account, what's the first thing you would do?" I asked.
"I'd buy my own tattoo shop." She said without hesitation.
"Really?"
"It's what I do, what I love," she said shrugging one shoulder. "If you were attracted to the same sex, what would your type be?"
I gave her an odd look. She didn't budge. Based off of the look she was giving me, we'd be sitting here until I answered the question. "A hard shell, I guess, but soft on occasion. Just for me. A dark and dirty sense of humor with a taste for danger."
"That could just as well be for a female. Go deeper."
I sighed, draping my arms over her legs. "Fine.. a toned stomach, powerful thighs, shorter than me, with a gender neutral name."
She laughed until tears brimmed at the corners of her eyes. She wiggling underneath my arms. "Oh, damn, that was good."
"It's my turn now." I said impatiently. I wanted the embarrassment of that question to be over with. Along with the disturbing images going through my mind. "If you were on a date with an attractive guy, he's sweet, he's charming. What would automatically kill any chance of a second date?"
She stared thoughtfully at the ceiling. "Flowers. If he brought me flowers, that's an automatic fail."
"I don't buy women flowers because I don't support killing things that are so beautiful." The fuck? Where did that come from? It was the truth, but I didn't go around telling people shit like that.
"Right!" She sprang into a sitting position. "And why the fuck would you waste money on something that's going to die anyway? If they're going to get fucking flowers, get them in a pot. Or even better, use the money to buy pizza."
I looked at her, her messy hair, her wild eyes and how her tshirt hung lower on one shoulder than the other. She was fucking gorgeous and I was going to be in so much fucking trouble.
