“How much farther until we meet the house?” Suki said breathlessly as she followed behind me through the streets. “We’ve been walking for an hour.”
“About ten more miles,” I said then, still walking.
“Ten?” she said, gasping. “How far have we walked?”
“About three.”
She breathed out a groan, dragging her feet.
“I was carrying you,” I said then, shrugging, “you insisted on being let down.”
She just groaned again, making me smile a little.
“I don’t think I can make it,” she said quietly.
But she suddenly dropped down.
My eyes flashed red.
And suddenly, I was in front of her, catching her before she collided with the ground.
Suki breathed uneasily, trying to stand but her knees kept buckling.
“Are you alright?” I said then, lashes lowering as I continued to hold her up. “You look pale, Angel.”
She just struggled to keep herself steady. “I know… call me weak, but… I’ve seen death. Just not like that. Not like how you killed that man.”
My lashes lowered. “Does remembering it disturb you?”
She nodded shyly.
“I apologize if I hurt you,” I said then, holding her up, “that wasn’t my intention. Next time, I will make sure to cover your eyes or do so without looking.”
She gazed up then, eyes glistening.
“I must protect you,” I said then, smiling. “Even your mind, correct?”
A small smile formed on her lips.
“Come on,” I said then, helping her up. “There’s a motel nearby. We can stay there tonight.”
I guided her arm around my neck and scooped her up, carrying her to the right.
She stayed in place as we continued down the street.
“Are you afraid of me?” I said then.
“A little,” she said quietly. “But it’s okay. Just because I fear you doesn’t mean I can’t trust you.”
I looked down at her then, lashes lowering. “That’s odd logic, right there.”
She just set her head on my chest.
Yes, the conflict. Resist me and then don’t. Typical human behavior, but a very amusing one at that.
“You’re very warm for a vampire,” she said then, shifting into me.
“How many times do I have to tell you that I am a demon, not a vampire?” I said to her, lashes lowering.
She just giggled and closed her eyes, burying herself in my hold.
