“Hey,” one of my coworkers said, whispering low, “did you hear that Will got downsized? Is that even possible?”
“Well,” the other girl said, “he’s now as low as us which is great. Now we can date him!”
“But, he’s been awfully close with that other girl… do you think we have a chance?”
“Did you hear that she’s now the new boss?” she replied. “That cute girl?”
“Really?”
“Yeah!”
I sighed as I typed frantically on my keyboard, watching words fill the spreadsheet on my document as Suki’s place next to me remained empty. “Such vile humans… with such gossip. What is the point of knowing all this information?”
“Hey,” someone said then.
I then stopped talking and gazed up, finding Suki standing in front of the two girls.
She glared then, but I smirked.
She was so short compared to the other two girls! She looked three feet high compared to five-footers!
Adorable.
“Workplace gossip is beneath us,” Suki said then. And she waved her hands frantically, face growing red. “And stop talking about Will like he isn’t here!”
The two girls gazed over at me, finding me watching.
They suddenly gasped and shrunk against each other.
There was silence for a moment, and I stared at them when they looked back at Suki.
“Uhm…” one of them said, “you have coffee in your hair.”
Suki then slumped in on herself. “I know. I made my coffee, bent down to get something, and then my head hit the table, and it spilled on me.”
I had to resist laughing just then, so I covered my mouth.
“Oh, my,” the other girl said, “are you alright? You didn’t burn yourself, did you?”
I then gazed up, alarmed.
She shook her head, making me relax. “No, it was iced.”
“Well…” she responded, laughing nervously, “at least you got ice on your head… you know… because you hit it?”
Suki just glared.
Her friend nudged her side, making her gasp. “Sorry, about her! She’s just joking! It’s hardly noticeable anyway!”
Suki just narrowed her eyes further. “Then why did you see it immediately.”
They whimpered and stuck together.
“You know,” one said then, “I think we have files to make!”
“Yeah!” the other replied. “You know the… topic… thing. We have to go! Bye!”
They then rushed away.
Five minutes later, Suki sat on a chair inside the “boss” office as I gently ran a brush through her hair.
The blinds were closed so no one could see in here, and we were both on break, so it didn’t matter if people were looking for us, anyway.
She kicked her legs as if she had a supreme amount of energy, and I just continued brushing as she pouted.
“Relax,” I said then, smirking, “at least it wasn’t gum.”
“Ha, ha, very funny.”
“No, I’m not joking,” I said then, “if it was gum, that wouldn’t be the best thing, would it?”
She sighed then, continuing the pout.
“Almost done,” I said then, finishing with the last knot. “There you are, your hair is washed and brushed.”
“Thanks,” she said numbly.
I just set the brush aside and stepped over to her, kneeling down.
She blinked when I tipped her head to meet my gaze. “Chin up,” I said, smiling, “don’t let that horrid coffee get to you.”
“I was so pretty,” she whined. “And then I got coffee all over me and my dress.”
“You look fine, Angel,” I said, chuckling. “I fixed your hair, and your dress is black.”
“I still hit my head,” she complained.
“There’s no bump. You’ll be fine.”
She just looked away, crossing her arms over her chest.
I just moved her chin to face me. “Are you seriously going to let a measly coffee ruin your day?”
“I was inconvenienced.”
“Get used to it,” I said then, smiling as I stood. “Human lives are filled with inconveniences.”
She watched me as I pulled out a mirror from her desk and then handed it over to her.
“Why is there a mirror in there?” she questioned me.
“This was my office before,” I told her, chuckling, “even though I usually work beside you, and you me, it’s helpful to keep things in here the cubicle cannot hold.”
She then looked into the mirror, and the blinked. “Woah.”
I gazed up. “Is something the matter?”
“How did you make me look like this?” she said then, running her hand down her head. “My hair is parted in a pretty way… my bangs are in the correct direction… my face is framed… and look at my clothes!” Her cheeks warmed. “How did you center my tie so well? Oh, my….”
“I’ve been alive longer than you, sweetheart,” I said to her, eyes glowing slightly. “Plus, this is coming from a girl who never cared for herself.”
She slumped her shoulders.
I just chuckled. “Hit you hard, didn’t I?”
She then sighed and set the mirror on her desk, puffing her cheek in annoyance. “Do you remember… a week ago… you changed me when I was sick? My clothes? You helped me into your T-shirt.”
“Yes,” I said.
“You have to do as I say, right?” she said then, gazing up at me.
I just smiled. “Should I be concerned?”
She ignored my comment and continued on, “You are to help me dress every morning. But you cannot make comments, play with, or look at my… intimate parts.”
“You aimed the end of that sentence with a question,” I said then, smirking.
“Stop it,” she said then, cheeks burning a bright red, “I don’t need your crude comments.”
I just closed my eyes kindly. “Alright. Whatever you wish.”
She then looked away and into the office space. “About the search… when do you want to start?”
“Whenever you want to, sweetheart.”
“I keep saying tomorrow, but something else comes up,” she said, sighing heavily. “Other daem, illnesses, gang members, murderers….” She trailed off and lowered her lashes.
I watched her for a moment. “Might I suggest something?”
She glanced over numbly.
“Why don’t we establish that you are safe first?” I asked her, smiling as I closed my eyes. “It would be a very great task to manage you are safe before going after the ultimate boss, would it not?”
“It would…” she said then, voice quiet as she cast me a concerned glance, “but I find it odd someone as hungry as you is suggesting to extend the time before your meal.”
I gazed down at her. “I can wait.”
Her eyes grew more with worry.
“Plus,” I said then, smirking, “I can have snacks along the way, can I not? I do enjoy human blood, as well.”
She just stared at me before she sighed, setting her chin on the desk. “You’re right. It might be safer for me, yes.”
I lowered my lashes, and my smile widened a bit. “Is something bothering you?”
“When is something not bothering me?” she retorted.
“I must press further on your current thought line,” I said to her, tipping my head to the side. “Why is your mind running rampant?”
She just sighed and closed her eyes.
“Suki…” I said then, stepping over to her and kneeling by her chair, “be honest with me. I do not like the web of lies you constantly build to fight against me.”
She just gazed down. “I know that… I know that you promised to never leave me, but for some reason… I am not convinced.”
I just smiled and closed my eyes, but I gazed up at her seconds later.
She looked away, still seeming uncertain.
“We are under a bind, Angel,” I said to her, and she gazed down at me again. “A bind that cannot be broken, do you understand?”
“Yes,” her voice was quiet.
“Even so,” I said to her, eyes glowing a slight red, “you can be falling, everyone can turn against you and hate you for everything you’ve done, the world could be crumbling to ash, the sights before you vanishing to dust, the throne you sit on could be broken and tumbling down a mountain of skeletons…” I trailed off, but continued when I caught her hands, “but I will catch you and carry you to the top,” her eyes then started sparkling, and I went on, “I will hold you in eternal darkness, I will forever… stand by your side. I will not leave, I will not run, I will not let what’s mine be taken from me. I am yours… you are mine. Do you understand?”
She nodded, seeming lost in my gaze.
“It is not just mere circumstance that binds us,” I said then, brushing my thumb along the mark on her side, “it is much more… something that cannot be broken by either of us willingly. You are mine; I am yours. That is final.”
I then gazed back up at her. “Do you understand now?”
She stared for a moment before nodding. “Yes.”
I then stood. “Good.”
And I held my hand out to her. “It is time for work. Your break is up in one minute. Come, now. Before people get suspicious.”
She took my hand and I helped her up.
