"Don't forget were leaving school early." Lyra tells me on the phone.
"I know what to do and where to go Lyra don't worry." I tell her as I shut the door to my car and head into school.
"Everything has to go perfectly my job rides on it." She says to me. Every year our town has a charity auction for the animals at the shelter. This year Lyra is setting it all up and she's in a tizzy.
"I am highly aware of that, look I'm about to go to my locker I'll see you in economics." I hang up the phone and head over to my locker. Resting against it is Alexander. What is he doing here?
"Why are you at my school? Also, how did you know this was my locker?" I asked.
He didn't respond he just pointed at my name tag on the locker. I rolled my eyes as I bump my hip against him so I could get into my locker.
"Well... Whatever my first question still stands what are you doing here?" I put my bag in my locker and started looking for my economics textbook.
"Don't worry I'm not here to stalk you I had to drop off some papers for the auction tonight. Also, we needed more tables and your school had some. And lastly, your economics textbook is under all that trash in your backpack." I instantly pause and looked up at him.
"It isn't trash, it's just disorganized." I mumble, he laughs as my cheeks flush up. "You're going to be at the auction tonight?" I asked while grabbing my book and shutting my locker.
"Yes. My family is sponsoring it, a very lucky lady is going to have a date with me." He raises his back off the locker and tucks his hands in his pockets. "Are you going to be there tonight?"
"Yeah. Trust me I would not be doing this if my best friend didn't beg me to do it."
"Really now? Can't wait you see you on the stage." He tells me. "Maybe I'll bid on you." His fingers trail over the top of my textbook. I could hear his sharp nails scrap against the pages. My mind starts imagining his fingers running down my-
"You better not. You don't have enough money in the world to win me." I yank my body away from him and start walking down the hall, I could feel his dark eyes gliding down my body. A small smile comes to my lips.
"Is that a bet?" He yells at me from down the hall.
I turn and smile, "Maybe. And how did you know I was looking for my textbook?"
He grins, "Your voice carries honey." My insides warm at him calling me honey. The things he does to me are questionable. Then, he turns and head off to whatever he needs to be.
I walk into class and get settled in my seat. Looking over I see Lyra trying to do her homework really quick. She always does this every single time the homework is due.
"Didn't do the homework again?" I asked her pulling mines out.
"Hey it's not my fault the work is boring." She said finishing up the last few answers. She better be lucky that she's naturally smart.
The bell rings and everyone starts pulling out their homework and notebooks. Mr. Banhammer starts to walk around the room collecting the homework. To Lyra's luck she actually finished it before he got to her, she better hope the answers are right. I handed him my homework then he proceeded back to the front of the classroom.
"I see that everyone has turned in the homework, even Lyraina." She gives him a thumbs up and he rolls his eyes at her. "Today class since some of you will be leaving early for the charity auction, this will be a make-up/catch up on work day. I will leave you guys to it." He sits in his desk chair and starts to grade the homework.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you Irene gave my Grandfather the applications for the internship at The Tribune." I pull out Lyra's form and handed it to her. "It's due in two days so don't forget to fill it out and I'll drop it off on my way to work or something." She gives me a nod and sticks it in her notebook.
"Before I forget to say anything, I saw Alexander walking the halls this morning. He was looking scrumptious." She says biting her finger. Sometimes I think she forgets that she has a boyfriend. Looking at her fingers, it brings me back to Alexander. How long and strong they were, how he dominated my textbook how he could dominate me. Damn Quinn, stop thinking about him you have a boyfriend.
"He looked decent." I tell her.
"Liar."
"Am not."
"Am too."
"I am not going to sit here and argue with you, Lyraina." I say to her. She gives me one of her evil stares for calling her by her full name.
The bell rings, finally study hall.
I pick up my things and head over to my locker so I can grab my bag and head to the library.
"Hey Quinn I'll meet you in the library." She tells me while heading off most likely to find Jack. As soon as I shut my locker and turned around, I'm face to face with Myers.
"Hey what's up." I ask him leaning up to give him a kiss on the cheek.
"Nothing, just seeing what you're up to." He tells me while placing his hands on my waist. I tense a bit under his touch, this is all so new to me. I'm not used to guys- you know touching me.
"Just getting my stuff and heading to the library to do some quick work. Hey are you coming to the charity auction tonight I'll be in it." I tell him.
"Wait you're going to be getting auctioned on. That's going to be very interesting." He says wiggling my hips back and forth.
"So, are you coming tonight? I would like to have you there." I tell him cupping his cheeks.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world." He places a soft kiss on mines. When he pulls back, I instantly start to blush.
"OK. It's at 7:00 don't miss it, and you better bid on me." I said pressing my finger against his chest.
"You bet."
We say our goodbyes and I head on in the library. Walking in I settle on the computer towards the back of the library. Usually during study period kids don't study they go wander around the school or hang out in the bleachers. I have no school work to do, thank god, so I decided that I'll fill out The Tribune internship application.
Last year I applied for the internship, but they weren't accepting any more applicants. Leaving the place, I saw a hiring sign at Ida's antique store and the rest was history. So, in a way me not getting the internship brought me somewhere far better.
As I'm filling out the papers Lyra comes strolling in. She plops down next to me and looks over to see what I'm doing.
"Gosh your filling that out today. It's due in two days." She said propping her feet up on the desk.
"Yeah. Two days Lyra today and tomorrow then it's due, why not get it done now since we have the time." I tell her handing her a pen so she can fill out hers.
"Fine, you're such a stuck up goodie goodie." She tells me shoving my shoulder.
"Thank you that's the best compliment yet." I say to her with a smile on my face. She grabs the pen from my hand and starts filling it out.
"There, finally done. Here you go." Lyra said as she handed me her application. I tell her thank you and lean down to stick it in my bag next to mines. "So, you excited for tonight?" She asks me.
"More nervous than exciting. I mean what if some weird creepy guy bids on me? I asked her.
"Well just smile and show him a good time. Remember that there's some sad little puppy out there that needs your help." She said patting me on the back. I guess I can think of it like that.
We continue to talk about random stuff until we were interrupted by an announcement.
"All the students that are participating in the charity auction you may leave."
"Let's go." Lyra says grabbing her bag. I grab my bag also and we head out the doors.
"I have to go do some stuff; I'll catch you at the venue." Lyra tells me while walking off. I pull out my car keys and head on over to my car.
I pull out of the school parking lot and head to the venue. Driving down the road I think about the event tonight. Lyra never really told me much about the event. This is a yearly thing in St. Helena, but since we were very young, we just heard about them. This will be my first year attending it me and Lyra both.
Turning onto Bell and Ford I spot the venue down the road. There're not many cars in the drive way yet, I must be early. I park my car and head over to the man with the checkboard.
"Name?" He asked
"Quinneth Worthingshire." I told him while waiting for him to find my name.
"You're good to go. Just follow the pink footsteps on the floor." I give him a smile and head on in.
Walking in the inside looks beautiful. There're tables everywhere with white clothes on them. The stage sits to the right and has white string lights hanging from them. Many caterers and workers are working around still setting things up. The smell of expensive food, most likely Italian, wafts through the air. I realize that I'm just standing in the front of the building like a creep, so I do as the man says and follow the footsteps until I reach the backstage. Opening the black curtains, I'm greeted by hairspray and loads of expensive perfume. Women are walking around everywhere trying to look for missing stocking and heels. I see one woman in the corner crying about her dress. This can't be real it looks like a scene out of a movie.
I look over to the right and see a booth with my name on it. I walk on over and get situated. Sitting down for a few minutes I see a woman come up to me. She has black dread locs wrapped around her head with a Paisley floral scarf. It pairs well with her floral dress and low heels.
"Hello I'm Shelia and I will be doing your makeup today." She tells me while taking out her brushes.
"Alright, but can you not do anything too glamorous I just want something simple." I tell her.
"You got it!" I watch as she pulls all her stuff out, concealers, powder and blush. Oh man I'm going to be here a while.
Shelia lightly puts blush on my face then steps away so I can see the product. Looking at myself in the mirror I don't even recognize myself.
"Wow Shelia this is amazing thank you so much." She really did a number on me. She put some light blush on my cheeks with a Smokey eye and some contour. If I had to guess, I wouldn't think it was me.
"Your very welcome I have to move on to the other girls, now don't touch your face." She says. I give her a nod letting her know I won't touch my face.
"Harlequin?" I hear Lyra say from behind me. I turn around in my chair to see her jaw drop to the ground. "Wow you look amazing this can't be you." She says bringing her finger up to my face. I bring my hand to swat hers away.
"Hey don't touch my face Shelia said no." I tell her.
"Who in the hell is Shelia?" She asks me. I point to Shelia who's in the corner doing someone else's makeup. It's the blonde that was crying when I first came in, now she seems calm.
"Fine I won't touch this is the best you've looked in a while." I gasp at her comment.
"Hey that's hurtful." I said giving a fake pout.
"It's true I won't lie to you Quinn. Go put your dress on now, carefully no makeup on the dresses their rentals." She walks off and goes to talk to the other girls.
I walk over to the rack and look for my dress.
"Ok Sarah, Jessica, Nia, Aaliyah here we go Quinneth." Pulling out the dress my eyes bulge open, it's beautiful. The dress is a black, long, sleek satin dress with a sweetheart neckline and spaghetti straps. I was scared for the dress because Clariza's dresses usually reveal a lot, if you what I mean, but this one doesn't. I walk towards the back to see if any of the dressing rooms are open. Looking towards the far left I see there is one open. I go inside and change really quick. Once I get the dress on, I look in the mirror and gawk on how this dress fits my body perfectly.
"Mary, you really have good taste." I whisper to myself.
I grab my clothes and put them in the bag that the dress was in. Walking back into the dressing room I sit my clothes in the chair and look around for my shoes. Towards the back I see a rack full of shoes and see my name on the black pumps. Reaching up, I try to grab the shoes, but sadly failed. Dang why do I have to be short.
"Let me get those for you." A male voice says behind me. I turn around to see Myer's dressed in a nice black and white suit. I'm smushed against the rack as Myers leans onto me to grab the shoes. His smell overcomes me so much I think I may loose consciousness.
"Anything for you." He bends down and slides my shoes on my feet. What am I Cinderella?
"Thank you, Myers." I tell him. He stands up and plants a sweet kiss on my lips. "You look handsome here I thought all you wore was flannel." I say laughing.
"You don't look bad yourself. All I thought you wore was crop tops and tennis skirts. He says. I give him a slight smack on his arm. "These are for you." He hands me a bouquet of flowers.
"Zinnias! I love them." Lotus flowers are my favorite, but these are beautiful too. I don't expect him to know everything about me, I mean we just started dating no more than 3 weeks ago. We walk over to my little booth. I lay the flowers on the table. "You better bid on me I don't want some weirdo having me for the night."
He slings his hands around my waist and pulls me closer to him. "I brought tons of cash so if anyone tries to challenge me, they won't stand a chance." He says. Thank god that makes me feel good. The highest someone might bid on me is like 50 bucks. Maybe even 40.
He leans in to give me another kiss, but sadly Lyra interrupts us.
"Hey, Hey no kissing the merchandise." She says eying Myers.
"Merchandise?" I asked her putting my hand on my hip.
"Yes, someone is going to buy you which makes you merchandise. No one touches or tastes the merchandise. Myer's go to your seat." He sighs and pats me on the shoulder.
"See you out there Quinn." He leaves out and goes to this seat.
I turn around and give Lyra a look. She shrugs her shoulder and goes over to check on the other girls.
It's been over an hour, my stomach starts to grumble. This is the second time It's done that. I look around to see if Lyra is anywhere, when I don't see her, I walk into the main part of the venue and sneak over to the buffet. The smell of warm bread and crab puffs fill my noise. I grab a napkin and start placing crab puffs on it. I pop one into my mouth, god this is so good. Soon as I finish the first one, I pop another one in my mouth.
"Damn if you eat another one, you'll buss out of that dress." A man says behind me. What the hell did he just say.
"Excuse me!" I semi scream at the guy to turn around and be face to face with Alexander.
"I only meant that you're eating them back to back if you eat any more, you'll buss out of the dress. I wasn't saying your fat because as we can see your clearly not." He says rambling on and on. I put my hand up for him to stop.
"When someone starves you then you can judge." I told him popping another crab puff in my mouth.
"You look... amazing Quinn just amazing." Those eyes flicker down my body, taking in every crevice of it. Lastly, his eyes savor on my lips. Memorizing by the shining glow of them. I may have to go find Shelia to see what type it was. I think it was called "Shimmer Glow".
"Thank you. You look nice also Alexander." He waves me off. He really does actually. His hair is slicked back with a string of it hanging out. He's wearing a black and white suit with a bow tie and black sleek shoes.
"Oh, I look nice everyday." He is forever cocky.
In the distance I see Lyra walking over to me, enraged.
"What did I tell you about eating, it will ruin the dress and make you pudgy." She grabs the crab puffs from me and hands them to Alexander. Turning me around she drags me back to the dressing room. What a tyrant.
"If you don't see me on stage call the cops she may have killed me." I scream to Alexander. He just laughs at my comment.
Finally, it's time for the auction to start. Me and all the other girls lined up according to our last names. Peeking through the curtains I see a lot of people. Women wearing their most expensive jewelry and men wearing their nicest suits. Paving my eyes to the right I see Alexander talking to a girl. She's wearing a dark blue dress with black heels. Her black hair flows down her back. What is she doing with him? What is he doing with her? Wait, am I jealous no way?
"Ok girls it's time smile and stand up straight." Lyra tells us while ushering us to the stage. I go back to my spot and do as she says. As we walk out many people clapped. The moment I walk out to the stage the bright light blinds me; Jesus how bright do the lights need to be.
"Welcome to the 2020 Auction Date Charity for Animals." The announcer says. Everyone starts to clap and cheer. "We will start the evening by thanking our sponsors Mr. Evans and Mr. Germani." Everyone turns in the room to look at them, they smile and thank the audience.
"Now we will start the auction remember hold up your pallets when you want to bid. Let's start with Ms. Jessica Andrew. Ms. Andrews is a secretary at Lando Co. and loves to do photography in her free time. We will start at 5 dollars." A man in the far left holds up his paddle.
"10 DOLLARS." The second man said.
"12."
"18."
"30." the last man said.
"Going once, twice, sold to Mr. Tanner for 30 dollars." The announcer said. Jessica walks off the stage to her date. "Now let's move on our next person Ms. Madeline Bernie. Madeline is a military child, so she grew up traveling all over the world. She wants to start a family and travel wit them also."
The evening goes on and on with girls getting bided off. Sarah Jenkins was the girl so far to get bided the highest. Mr. Evan's bought her for 400 dollars I mean wow. Sarah's always been drop dead gorgeous with her sandy hair and perfect sized waist. The girl that beats her would have to look like Naomi Campbell.
"Our second to last contestant for tonight is Ms. Quinneth Worthingshire. Quinneth attends Batcarvers High School, works at the local antique shop in town and loves to paint. Let's start the bid at 13 dollars."
"20 dollars." A man says holding his paddle up. I look to the man to see that it's Myers, a small smile graces my face.
"40 dollars." A man to the right of me says. I look down at him and he gives me a creepy grin. Oh no I will not be getting killed tonight. That man looks like a mix of Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. I look to Myers and gave him a 'bid higher' look.
"60 dollars." Myers said.
"80 dollars." The creepy man said.
"360 dollars." Myers screamed out.
"Eh it isn't worth it." The creepy man said sitting down and drinking his champagne. Yes no one else is bidding on me but Myers. This will finally end.
"400 dollars." The audience turned around to see the mysterious man with his paddle up. Some people cleared out the way to expose the man. I gasp in shock at who the voice belonged to.
Alexander.
What the hell is he up to. I point my finger up at Myers to tell him to go higher.
Myers: "450".
Alexander: "500."
Myers: "580."
Alexander: "680."
I look to Alexander and mouth the word "stop". He gives me a smirk and mouths the words "no". I just groan, this is not going to end well.
They keep going like that for almost 5 minutes. The crowd starts to look at me, then look back at them. What is Alexander doing?
"1,000 dollars." Myers said giving Alexander a smirk. There is no way Alexander can go higher than that. And there could be so way Myers has that type of money on him, but I don't question it. I start to almost step down from the stage until Alexander says something.
"10,000 dollars." Everyone including me gasps.
TEN THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS!!!!!!
