"Ok, so I've got the fettuccine noodles, sauce, heavy cream and garlic cloves. Now what else do I need?" I tell my grandfather on the phone as I adjust it in my hand.
"We have salt, butter and all that stuff all you need to get is some more flour and parsley." He says while fumbling the phone.
"Grandpa what are you doing it sounds like you're in a tornado or something." I turned the corner to the next isle over for the flour.
"I just... I can't find anything to wear. I haven't been on a date since John F. Kennedy was president." He tells me.
I belch out a laugh. "Look, just let me get the rest of the items on the list and I'll come home and pick you out of an outfit. How does that sound?"
"Nice, thank you Quinney." He says. Ever since my Grandmother died, he's swore off women. He feels that if he dates another woman, he'd be cheating on her. My Grandmother would not want him moping around she would want him to live his life, and that's what I'm going to do, help him live it. I tell him goodbye and finish getting everything on my list.
Arriving to the checkout line I lay everything on the conveyor belt.
"Will that be all honey?" The cashier lady says.
"Yes, that's it." I reach in my back pocket to get my wallet and feel nothing. I move my hands to the other side of my pocket then my fronts, nothing.
"That will be 36.50." The lady tells me while waiting for me to give her money. Money I obviously don't have.
"See this is kind of a funny story. I left my wallet at my house is there any way I can sit this aside and come back and pay for it?" I ask in a pleading tone.
"I'm sorry honey I can't do that." She reaches over the conveyor belt and starts to grab the food.
"Uh wait I-." I'm instantly cut off by a familiar voice.
"I've got it." A male voice says reaching over to hand the cashier lady and 50-dollar bill. "Keep the change."
I turn around to see the husky male voice belongs to Alexander, "What are you doing here?" He looks taken back by my answer, did it come out wrong.
"Shopping for chocolate cupcakes." He shows me the cupcakes, chocolate sits on top of them as colored sprinkles decorate them.
"Right, you really don't have to." I put my hands up to the cashier lady indicating her not to take the money from him. "I can put all of this back."
He gently grabs my hand and rests it down to my side. "I've got this I insist." I work it over in my head for a few seconds. I mean this date is very important to grandpa and I don't want to mess it up because I'm too proud.
Reluctantly, the words I try to bite back leave my lips, "Alright, you can pay for the food, but I will pay you back every cent." I nod to the cashier lady to take the money.
"Wouldn't want it any other way." He smiles down as me. I pull my eyes away from him, trying not to get drawn in to them.
We stand in silence while she bags up all the groceries. Once she's done, I give her a thank you and wait for Alexander to pay for his stuff, we both walk out together.
"I guess I should thank you twice." I say while pushing the cart over to my car. He looks at me with confusion on his face while he tucks his wallet in his back pocket. That wallet probably cost like a month of my minimum wage job.
"What for?" He asks trying to read my face. His lips purse up at me.
"Well you paid for my groceries saving me from Immortal embarrassment. Then you also saved me from that guy at the Blondes party last week." We arrive to my car and I unlock the door.
"No need to thank me, I would do anything for you." He confidently says. My head whips around to him.
"You barely know me." My trunk pops up and I start to put the groceries in the car. Alexander picks up some bags and starts helping me put them in the car. I give him a little smile as a sign for gratitude.
"It's not about the knowing of one it's about the feeling you get from them. The assurance that they are a good person." I'm taken aback by this.
"Who said that?" I ask.
"My Grandfather. He always looked for the best in people. He swore he could feel people's emotions, feeling if they were a good person or not. You can care about someone even if you don't really know them." He says this while looking deep into my eyes. If I didn't know any better, I think that he would try to kiss me right now.
"Your Grandfather sounds like a wise man." I close the trunk of my car and fully give him my undivided attention.
"He was." He sticks out his hand for me to shake. I raise my hand up to shake his. The moment my hand connects to his it's like electricity sparks from his body to mine. We instantly move our hands away from each other in shock, not again.
"So, what's all that food for?" He asked. "Making food for your boyfriend or something?"
I laugh, "Ha ha no. It's for my grandpa, he's got a date tonight and I'm cooking."
"That's real nice of you."
"I know I'm the best granddaughter ever." I flare my hair, he laughs at this. "Catch you later."
He walks off to his car, but before he goes far, I step in front of him. "Can I have your address?" I ask.
"Why you just can't get away from me." He says with a smirk on his face. I roll my eyes and laugh.
"No, I need it so when I pay you back, I know where to drop the money off." I tell him. "Maybe I could come by tomorrow and drop it off? Noon?
"That won't work I'll be somewhere at that time?" I rake my head for another date.
"Well I work tomorrow so maybe you can drop it off there? It's an antique shop called Ida's, it's on Madison and Grove. You know it?
"Not really, but I'll find it so I'll see you in a day then? He says with a smile on his face.
I give him a shy smile. "One day one night I can hardly wait." He gives me a wink and walks off to his car. I release the breath that I held in my chest and open the door to get in my car. I quickly shut the door and retrace the moment. The way he smelt to the touch of his hands. I touch my hands remembering the spark that happened. What was that? Maybe he just rubbed his hands together and shocked me. I shrug off the matter and head home.
"I'm home and I got all the ingredients. Where are you grandpa?" I scream, while sitting the groceries on the counter.
"Up here! He screams from upstairs. Still must be looking for an outfit.
I run up the stairs to his room to see him tossing tons of shirts out of his closet. Blue, green, yellow, orange shirts flying on this bed. Walking over to his bed I pick up a baby blue button up shirt and walk over to the mirror where he stands.
"Here." I say while handing him the shirt. "This will look great on you, put on your tan pants and black dress shoes." I kiss him on the cheek and head back down stairs to get the food started.
"OK let's see I need a pot... Pan for the chicken and some stirring spoons." I say to myself putting water in the pot and turning on the stove. I take the noddle's out of the plastic and put it in the pot. Taking the pot from the side of the kitchen I pour the fettuccine sauce in and also put the chicken in there. This is going to taste so good.
I drain the noodles from the pot and place them on the plates. As I reach for the chicken and sauce, I hear a knock at the door, that can't be Irene it's too early. I wipe my hands on the cloth and head towards the door.
Opening the door, I'm greeted by Lyra.
"Lyra what the hell are you doing here? I told you I can't hang out tonight I'm hosting a dinner for my Grandfather and his date, Irene." I tell her while ushering her out the door. She's wearing a purple top with light blue boyfriend jeans and sneakers. Her bloody red hair is in two braids.
"I'm bored Quinney. Jacks with friends and I don't want to do my homework that's lame. Let me stay please." She asked, pleading with me. I huff and welcome her in the house.
"Thanks babe." She kisses me on the cheek and runs into the kitchen.
I run after her Immediately before she eats all the food. "Don't touch anything Lyra I swear." I warn her. I turn around to pour the sauce on the noodles to hear smacking behind me. Turning around I see Lyra eating the chicken.
"HEY! What did I say no eating the chicken?" I swat her hands away and she pouts in sadness.
"I'm hungry Quinn."
"Well you'll have to wait like everyone else."
I finally get all the plates made and the drinks poured. Me and Lyra start to bring all the food to the table. I go back to the kitchen to get the pepper when the doorbell rings. I opened the door to be in the presence of a person I never wanted to see again, Myers.
I look behind myself to see that no one sees him. Lyra most likely is pick eating the foods on the plate, I'll scold her later. That's the least of my worries right now. I place my hand on his chest to push him to the driveway away from the windows.
"What do you want." I said in a sassy tone crossing my arms. The nerve of him to come by with what he did to me.
"I wanted to come and explain to you why I stood you up." He says.
"Well you better have a good explanation, buddy. All have you know I never get dolled up for anyone not even myself. I sat in that restaurant by myself for over 2 hours waiting for you. Not a call, text, a freaking telegram, nothing. The humiliation I felt was astronomical." I tell him enraged out of my mind. I never thought I would have this much anger in me. "God I must be the biggest fool in St. Helena, huh?" I asked him flaring my arms in the air.
"The reason I stood you up is because I got in a car accident. It happened over there by the Hanover Grill on York Street." My eyes bulge open in that moment. I really wish I could erase the last 2 minutes of this conversation.
I look to his neck to see scars that have barely healed and scraps on his knuckles. I grab his hand and grazed my fingers over his bruised knuckles. He flinches at first, but then calms at my touch.
"Well why didn't you text or call me then?"
"My phone was lost during the crash." Makes sense.
"I'm so sorry are you Ok? Now I feel like crap for hating you and calling you all those horrible names." I tell him with sorrow in my voice.
He moves his hands away from mine and puts them on my cheek. "I would never stand you up. You're too precious for that." He leans forwards and plants his lips on mine. At first, I'm shocked by the kiss, but I hesitantly start to kiss him back. My hands move to his neck and his moves to the middle of my back. After a few seconds of kissing we back up for air.
"Wow." I touch my lips in surprise at the kiss. I don't feel what I thought I should have felt, sparks. The kiss just felt ordinary. Would Alexander's be better? Why am I thinking about him in this moment, he's not even here.
"Yeah wow, so I'll see you at school?" I give him a nod since I can't say anything from being in shock and all. He leans forward and plants another kiss on my lips and walks across the street to his car.
I go back into the house and shut the door. I graze my lips remembering his on mine. I just had my first kiss.
Myer's P.O.V.-
I stand by my car while I watch her walk into the house. As the door shuts the smile that I plastered on my face disappeared and was replaced with a smirk. Girls are so easy to play.
Reaching into my back pocket I pull out my phone and call the princess. It rings and rings until there's an answer.
"Did you do it." She asked with eagerness in her voice.
"Yes. She's fallen back into my good graces." I tell her.
"Good make sure that runt doesn't do anything to disrupt our plans the King won't be too happy."
"Got it."
"Your doing well Myers, your King is proud."
"Trust and believe this won't be hard. Great doing business with you princess." I hang up and the phone and get into my car.
"Oh, baby you don't know what you got yourself into." I slam on the gas and ride off to Insofar.
Quinn's P.O.V.-
"Grandfather come on Irene, me and Lyra are waiting!" I yell up the stairs to him. Irene has been here for all of 10 minutes and he still isn't down here.
"I'm coming!" He yells down to us.
Turning around I see Irene and Lyra talking in the living room. Irene is a very beautiful woman, she's around 5ft, short black/greyish hair. She's wearing a black knee length dress with red roses on it and small pumps. Grandfather did well.
"I don't know how long he's going to be up there, but umm let me take you to the table we can snack on the bread and have a small conversation?" I tell her.
"That sounds nice." She smiles at me and follows me to the dining room.
We all three take a seat at the table. We sit there in silence for a few seconds not knowing what to say to each other. Leaning back in the chair I look towards the staircase to see if he was coming down, god what was taking so long?
"Since my grandpa will most likely take a millennium to get down here let's chat. Irene, what do you do for a living?" I ask her while reaching over to grab a bread stick.
"I used to be a stay at home mom until my husband died and I had to go back to work. Before I was with my husband I went to college and got a journalist degree, but never used it until now. I work at The Tribune, have been there for about 5 years now."
"Wow cool I tried to Intern there a year ago, but they weren't accepting applicants do you think they are now?" I ask her eating the last of my bread. Our school makes everyone intern somewhere, it's a part of high school credit. Some kids go to the big, popular businesses, like The Tribune. For the past two years I've been wanting to intern there, but they never has a spot been open.
"Matter of fact I'm in charge of picking out the applicants. Maybe you send in one and I'll check it out."
"Yes, I would appreciate it thank you so much."
"Irene can I also apply too?" Lyra asks. Believe or not Lyra is actually a good journalist. When it comes to getting the scoop on things, she's your women.
"Perfect! The more the merrier. So, Milo said that you work at the antique shop in town and you Lyra volunteer at a vet clinic."
"Yeah." Me and Lyra say at the same time.
"It's nice to see two hardworking girls."
We both give her a smile and thank her.
We continued on talking about ourselves having a good time, when finally, my Grandfather came down from upstairs. Instead of wearing the baby blue I picked out for him he's instead wearing a black button up and grey dress shoes. I give him the eye about the outfit and he gives me the 'don't ask' look. He goes over to his table and we start to dig in.
The night went smoothly, grandpa and Irene hit it off like they were old friends. We also discovered things about grandpa that we didn't know. Once the dinner is over me and Lyra start to bring the dishes to the kitchen while grandpa walks Irene out to her car. Once they are out the door, we set down the dishes really quick and run towards the window. Sticking our heads down so they wouldn't see us we gaze at them. They seem like whatever they are talking about must be good because smiles scratch across their face. Hesitantly he leans down to her and kisses her on the lips. Me and Lyra awe in adoration towards them.
"You think we'll ever find love at that age?" Lyra asks me as she lays her head on my shoulder.
"I don't know, the future is uncertain." I tell her kissing her on the forehead.
"Promise me we never leave each other I can't live without you." She lifts her head up and looks me in the eyes.
"I promise no matter what happens I'll never leave you." I pull her close to me and give her a huge squeeze.
"I love you Harlequin."
"I love you more Ly."
We stay that way watching Grandfather and Irene. I may never find love in that way, but the love that I get from Lyra and grandpa is enough for me.
