"Ok guys once you come in, go on by the table and grab a refreshment then go find a seat." Dana told us while directing everyone around.
"I'll grab us donuts and coffee you find us a seat." I told Lyra pointing over to the chairs.
"Ok. Get me a chocolate donut with sprinkles." I give her a nod and walk over to the refreshment stand.
Since me and Lyra signed up to be on the homecoming committee, we have to show up to the informationals every Monday, and todays that day. Walking over to the stand, I look around and see what they have. Donuts, cookies, juice boxes and coffee. Better than they did last year. I spot the last chocolate donut and snatch it up quickly before anybody else grabs it. Holding the donut in one hand, I grab myself two chocolate cookies and a juice box.
As I turn around to walk over to Lyra, a figure stands in my way. On the feet of the person is silver strappy Sandals, paired with a checkered shirt and purple top with the words "baby" on it. A Purple Heart shaped necklace hangs from her dainty neck. Looking up I see it's no other than Tara Tang, one of the Blondes. Her strawberry hair flows loosely down her back.
She crosses her arms across her chest trying to pump up her boobs to make them look bigger than what they were. I look down at my chest to see I have absolutely nothing to pump up. Benefits of having a small chest is that I don't have back pain.
"Hey Tara how nice it is to see you." I say to her plastering a fake smile on my face.
"I know I love seeing me too." She responds, while glossing her lips. "Anyways so I heard through the halls that you and Myers broke up." A popping sound comes from her mouth, it makes me jolt a bit.
She's been waiting for me to break up with Myers so she could sink her claws inside of him. I saw the way she would cut her eyes at me and him in the hallway. If looks could kill, I'd be dead.
"No, we took a break. What's it to you?" I ask her while shifting the donut from my right hand to the left.
"As you know Myer's was mine before you dived in a stole him from me. Now, since he's rid of you, like I knew would happen, he'll want someone new and fresh and that's me." She said flipping her hair.
"Look, mess with him and you mess with me. We may not be talking right now, but he's still my boyfriend." I roll my eyes at her and head over to where Lyra is. I hand her the donut and then sit my bag on the ground.
"What did Tara want to talk to you about?" She bit a piece of her donut out and turned all the way in her chair to face me.
"She wanted to know if Myer's was completely single."
"You know Tara is always trying to show someone up. He may get with her and then throw her to the dogs once he's done. Girls like Tara aren't meant to be a kept woman." She wipes her mouth with her napkin and takes another bit.
"Yeah, you're right. Quiet down Dana's about to speak." We both turn our attention to Dana.
"Hello guys I'm Dana Bellows the chairwomen for the homecoming committee, thank you all for signing up to participate. Now, today I will be telling you of the different jobs we need filled. We will need people to work on the floats, a couple of guys need to make posters, print tickets and some to decorate the gym for the dance. There are signup sheets on the table right behind me so you guys can sign up for whatever you want in a few minutes."
"Now, what I want to talk about is the safety regulations and what we all expect from you guys." She said continuing on.
After 45 minutes of reading everything out to us she was finally done talking and we all proceeded over to the signup sheets.
"So, what are you going to do?" Lyra asked me while reading the signup sheets.
"I was thinking of doing the homecoming float. Last year I did tickets I was bored out of my mind." I sat in a hard and uncomfortable chair for over 2 hours handing out tickets, it was the worst.
"I remember that. I honestly felt bad for you and you know I never feel bad for anyone." She's not lying she doesn't. "Well, whatever you do I'm doing; you will not be leaving me with some randoms."
"I'll sign us up then." I pick up the homecoming float sheet and put our names on it. "Ok ready to go?" I asked her.
"Yeah, come on." We say bye to everybody and head down the hall.
"Gosh I forgot I have to turn in my essay, can you wait by my car for me?" I asked her.
"No, I will not. Call me when your done I'll be with the cheerleaders." She throws up a peace sign and heads out the door.
Walking into Mr. Jeffersons room, I see him conversating with some students. When he sees me walk in, he dazzles me with his perfect teeth and penguin tie.
"Hey Quinneth you got the paper for me?" He asked rubbing his hands together. He has been waiting to read my essay, everyday trying to get hints of what I will write.
"Yes, I got it." I tell him. Reaching into my bag I pull it out and hand it to him.
I wait there for a few minutes as he skims over the essay. "Stacey Abrams nice choice. The vocabulary is fantastic, great hook and thesis. I have high hopes for this, next week Monday is when I will send it out." He says tucking my paper in the drawer.
"Well alright I'll be seeing you tomorrow." I tell him. We say our goodbyes and I head back down the hallway. It's so nice walking through the halls after hours, so peaceful and quiet. Walking through the front door of the school I make a turn onto the football field.
Looking around I see Lyra in the middle of the field talking to some of the cheerleaders, specifically Mary, Kate and Khadijah. As I get closer, I overhear their conversation.
"So, the dress that I have decided to pick is strappy satin lavender dress with lavender sequins." Lyra says as the girls stare at her phone.
"Lyra your ass is going to literally pop out of that dress I'm so jealous." Kate says making a popping noise with her mouth. As they keep talking Mary notices me walking up and acknowledges me.
"Hey Quinn what's up?" She asked as she puts her brown locks in a pony tail.
"Just turned in my paper to Mr. Jefferson." I tell her.
"Damn it. I haven't finished mines yet." Mary responded back to me in a huff.
"If you need help or anything just text me."
"Really, thanks Quinn. With cheerleading, National honors society and FLOA it's a lot to juggle." Khadijah rolls her eyes at what Mary said.
"You do know that most of that crap means nothing in the real world, right?" Khadijah says to Mary.
"It does for college. We all can't have rich parents like you Dij." She said sneering at Dij.
"Hey I have to work for what I get. Can't help it my families is rich." She's got a point.
"So, Quinn I heard Myers beat up Will." Mary said in a concerning voice.
"Yeah, he did. I don't know what's gotten into him." I told her shrugging my shoulders.
"It's Male masculinity." Kate said. "They always feel like they have to protect you from anything like I've been protecting myself before we knew each other. It's all for the ego." She tells me.
"You guys still together?" Mary asked.
"We are on a break I just need to clear my head and focus on myself."
"OR to focus on your rich sugar daddy." Dij said sticking her tongue out. What is she talking about? I looked at her with a confused face.
"They're talking about Alexander." Lyra tells me.
"Yes, he's rich, but money isn't everything." Kate said.
"I can't believe he bid 10,000 dollars he really must like you." Mary says in a sure tone. "When's the date happening?"
"Tomorrow actually." They all gasp in excitement.
"We are totally coming over tomorrow. Don't object because you have no say so in the matter." Khadijha tells me putting her finger up at me.
"Fine, fine but don't say anything weird to him I'm looking at you Dij." She puts her arms up trying to look guilty.
"I tried to make my move on him at The Blondes party, but he wouldn't have me he was too busy asking questions about you." She told me while typing on her phone. Asking about me? Asking what?
"Wait... He was asking about me. What happened?" I asked curiously. All of us looked to Dij for answers.
"Well, I don't remember everything because I was blacked out drunk, but he asked about you, personality wise." We all usher her along to say more. "Annnnd I told him you were a goodie goodie and a good friend." Hey better than stuck up or something like that. "He's into you Quinn you better snatch him up and quick. Look we got to go and work on some cheers catch you guys later." Khadijah, Mary and Kate all walk away and that just leaves me and Lyra.
"I don't know if I should go on the date anymore." I told Lyra as we linked arms.
"Why?" She asked.
"Because now I know he def likes me and... what If I can't move on." I tell her. I still have strong feeling for Myers, even know we are on a break and not speaking to each other.
"Look only time will tell don't beat yourself up about it. The world is our oyster you have all the time in the world."
"You always know what to say."
"Hey that's what best friends are for."
The Next day
"Man, where is she?" I mumble to myself. Today's the day we start the internship at The Tribune and Lyra isn't here yet.
Behind me I hear heels frantically running, turning around I see that it's Lyra. Her black blazer back hangs off her shoulder and her bag drags on the ground. I get up from my seat and help her out.
"Ly what happened?" I asked her while grabbing her bag and sitting it on the desk.
"My brother hid my car keys so I spent over an hour looking for them." She says angrily.
"Where were the keys at?" I ask her.
"Inside the butter container in the fridge." Ewe why would you hide something there? Her brother lives to torture.
"I swear if I could I would kill him." I don't think she's lying. "Did I miss anything?" She asks while finally getting situated and we both sit down.
"No not really. They haven't come out to tell us anything I guess their late too."
We sit there for 10 more minutes until a tall woman with light brown hair comes out of an office which I'm assuming is hers.
"Hi and good morning to you all. Congrats on being picked for the 2020-2021 internship here at The Tribune." She says clasping her hands together. We all began to clap and look around at each other. "Enough of that. My name is Elaine Timmons I will be in charge of you all. You will get your assignments from me and if you have any questions don't be scared to ask me. Now when I call your name please come up to me." She pulls a clipboard from the desk near-by and began reading names.
"Jolie Jones, Katherine Lang and Jasper Hernanadez you guys will be with me in my office helping me organize papers head on in right now." All three of them get up and head in her office.
"Randy Bellows, Tim Cane and Lyraina Berkely you guys will be downstairs in the basement going through old stories and finding ones you feel are the best for our 'Blast to the past' news special." Lyra gets up and says bye to me as her and the two other boys head downstairs. "Now you two Quinneth Worthingshire and Lyle Bangyork you will be going through these news articles from the past two weeks and filing them." Me and Lyle both get up and started going through the boxes. Mrs. Timmons walks into her office and shuts the door.
I grab two newspapers from the box and start to file them in the correct order.
"Since we'll be working with each other for a while I guess I should introduce myself. Lyle Bangyork." He says to me as he holds his hand out for me to shake. I take in his appearance. His jet-black curly hair hangs off his face hiding this light brown eyes. On his body he's wearing a button up collar shirt and black slacks.
I put the newspaper down on the table and shook his hand. "I'm Quinneth Worthingshire, but I go by Quinn." I say giving him a small smile.
"Cool name." He says to me.
"Cool last name. Never heard the last name Bangyork before."
"Yeah, it's something that my great-grandparents conjured up. You go to Batcavers, right?" He asked putting a box on the floor and opening up another one.
"Yeah, do you?" I've never seen him around school before, but yet there are like 1,000 kids that go there so I could have just missed him.
"I attend Catholic school. My parents didn't want me to follow in the sin that public school has." He said chuckling.
"Sin? Sin is everywhere."
"It is, but to my parents it's not in the Catholic church." I don't respond back to him because honestly, I have nothing to say.
"I don't know if you want to come, but the other interns and I were going to stop by Fran's Fortune over on Rine St do you want to come?" He asked pausing from filing the newspapers and looking me straight in the eye. My eyes cower down from his, the look was intense.
"Sure, I have nothing else to do. Probably was going to go home and watch SpongeBob or something." I respond to him laughing at myself. Since me and Myers are on a break we don't go anywhere anymore. The only person I usually hang out with is Lyra.
"Fantastic let's finish this up."
We spent the next 2 hours filing over 200 newspapers. We plop down on the floor in agony. My legs feel like jelly and my back has a crook in it. Turning my head over to the door I see Lyra and her partners come over to us.
"You alright?" Lyra asked as she crotched down to my level.
"Far from alright. My legs and back hurt." I tell her groaning in pain.
"Don't be weak get up." She pulls at my arm while helping me rise off the ground. "See your fine." She says patting me on the back I again groan out in pain.
"Lyle said some of the other interns are going out to Fran's Fortune you want to come?" I ask her while grabbing my bag and slinging it over my shoulder.
"Yeah, sure I'm down. Who's Lyle?"
I point to Lyle who's conversating with the other interns. "He's really nice."
"He's cute." I roll my eyes at her. We procced to leave the building and head for Fran's Fortune
Location: Fran's Fortune
"Hi yall welcome to Fran's Fortune I'm Sally your waitress for the night. What will it be?" She pulled out her notepad and pen waiting for us to order. Jolie and Katherine ordered first, then Lyra, Lyle, Randy and then me. Jasper and Tim didn't come along with us tonight they had homework to do. Once she ends up leaving we all sit around and talk to each other.
"So how about we go around and get to know each other." Katherine says. "I'll start off my name is Katherine Lang I go to Batcarvers High school like most of you do. I'm on the debate team with Jolie." She says pointing over to Jolie she gives us a shy smile and waves to us. "My mother and father are both teachers at Batcavers and I have little sister named Nancy."
"I'll go next my name is Lyraina but I go by Lyra if any of you call me Lyraina, we will have a problem." Everyone looks at each other with scared expressions on their face. "I have a little brother who drives me insane. My boyfriend's name is Jack he's everything to me and my best friend is Quinneth who's sitting right next to me."
Randy looks at me with a familiarity, suddenly his eyes bulge open. "Hey you're the 10,000-dollar girl." He says to me.
"10,000 dollar what?" Lyle says in a confused tone.
"At the charity auction like two weeks ago this guy bids 10,000 dollars on this girl. I knew her name was unique, but I couldn't put my finger on it, but when Lyra said your name it sounded familiar."
"Yeah, that's me." I tell them trying to not look so embarrassed.
"Now that's insane, but thanks to him all the strays were able to be taken care of." Lyle says trying to change the topic. I whisper a 'thank you' to him. He just nods at me.
"I actually got a puppy from the shelter yesterday. I named him Bob he's so cute." Jolie says showing us the photo of the dog.
Less than five minutes our waitress, Sally, shows up with our food. "Let's eat." Lyra says digging into her food.
After Dinner...
Once everyone is done eating, we all grab our bags and head for the doors. "Did you have fun?" Lyle asks me as he walks me to my car.
"Yeah, it was a fun time. Randy's story about his dog was hilarious." I say still laughing at the story.
"Who knew a dog could have so much vengeance. This you?" He said pointing to my bug. I give him a nod and unlock my car. "Nice car, when did you get it?" He asked rubbing the top of the yellow bug.
"All mine. My Grandfather got it for my birthday. "I remember the moment as clear as day. He woke me up at like 6 in the morning I was so tired. I dragged myself down the stairs and into the driveway. When I saw the car, I almost had a heart attack. I hadn't seen a smile on my Grandfathers faces in a long time, not since my Grandmother passed away. We got in the car and I drove us to Burg-oh-wow and instead of eating in the diner we ate in the car." I look down at the ground smiling.
"Sounds like a beautiful moment."
"It was."
"Well, I'll let you go see you next week." He waves goodbye to me and heads for his car.
I wave back to him and start to drive on home.106Please respect copyright.PENANArgedUagEbq
