Sawyer
"Why do you have my notebook?"
I always thought people were being dramatic or clichè when they used the phrase--I wish the ground would open up and swallow me whole.-- It seemed a bit over the top. However, being in this situation, with my back turned to her, the notebook still between my hands, I couldn't agree more with that phrase. It wasn't that I was embarrassed about Toni finding out, or even nervous over how she would react. I would have rathered it was Toni's. But that wasn't her voice.
I turned around slowly, taking in Kaylee standing in the doorway of the guest room. One of her eyebrows were raised and her arms were crossed over her chest.
"This is yours?" I asked. My throat felt like sandpaper.
She chuckled at my reaction. "I'm assuming you saw everything else in the chest."
At least she didn't look or sound angry, quite opposite. Her expression was leaning more towards amused.
"I'm done, let's get going!" Toni yelled.
Kaylee glanced over her shoulder. "Be right there."
She swiped the notebook from my hands, opened the closet and dropped it on top of the chest. Right as I was about to apologize, she unbuttoned and dropped her shorts.
My jaw dropped the same time her shorts hit the floor. I should have looked away. I should have at least covered my fucking eyes. But did I? Of course I fucking didn't. Because I'm an idiot. Because she's got an amazing pair of legs.
She wasn't looking at me as she grabbed some black jeans and a red leather jacket from the closet. She put both on before facing me. There was a moment of hesitation in her eyes when she saw me staring. "You done checking me out, eye candy?"
I shook my head from the daze it was in. She was just teasing me, but she couldn't have been more right.
Her grin spelt trouble when she turned around and started for the living room. I followed after her, stuffing my hands into the pockets of the black hoodie I'd put on.
As soon as Toni saw us, she grabbed her purse and skipped through the open front door. Apparently, she wasn't giving me an option here. We were going--whether I wanted to or not. It wasn't until we were in my car, on the way to Orion's, that I was given the chance to speak. But I couldn't remember what I'd planned on saying. I couldn't focus on anything other than the realization that those weren't Toni's things in the guest bedroom. They were Kaylee's.
Kaylee's lingerie. Kaylee's leather jackets. Kaylee's handcuffs. Fuck me. I'm an idiot.
I forced those thoughts aside, glancing over at Toni sitting in the passenger seat. "Before we get there.. You should know that Fletcher is a man whore. Total slutt. Steer clear of him as best you can."
She gave me an apprehensive look.
"And Greg's a drama seeker. Like literally, an instigator. He'll start a fight if he so much as smells tension."
"Okay."
"Weston's cool, I trust him with you. He's suppose to be bringing his girlfriend." I said casually, despite the inner turmoil I was in. They were going to make fun of me till the day I died. They were going to question why I was with someone like Toni, and they were going to give her hell tonight. "Maya's usually there, she's Fletchers on--again-- off--again, girlfriend."
"Relax Sawyer," she said as I pulled up alongside Orion's driveway. She unbuckled her seat belt and shot me an encouraging smile. "I'll be fine."
She was out of the car before I could correct her.
Kaylee leaned forward, resting her arms over the seats on either side of her. "Got any advice for me?"
I shot her a look, expecting her to be joking. It was hard to tell if she was serious or not. I suppose it wouldn't hurt. "Don't leave Toni alone with anyone but Weston or Hanna."
She seemed to ponder that for a moment, then nodded. "Weston or Hanna, got it."
Toni rapped her knuckles against the passenger sides window.
We exited the car, trying to keep up with Toni's fast pace. She really wasn't giving me any room to back out of this.
"Slow the fuck down, this isn't a race!" Kaylee yelled after her.
She waited for us in front of the door. "Should I ring the doorbell? Or knock?"
I opened the door and stepped inside before I could come up with some excuse not to be here. Toni obviously wanted to meet my friends. No matter how much I knew she would regret that decision after tonight, I had to let her make that choice.
She hesitated in the doorway, seeming uncomfortable about entering, even when Kaylee followed me inside.
"What, now you want to be a turtle?" Kaylee asked passively.
Toni blushed, stumbling over her feet to follow.
I lead the way to the basement, where the sound of music and gun fire was coming from. No one noticed our arrival, after all, I hadn't given them a definite answer. I let my eyes scan over the people here, wondering just how much damage control I would have to do. My gaze stopped on Penelope.
Fuck.
No fucking way.
I grabbed the end of Toni's sleeve, turning back around with every intention of leaving.
"Sawyer! You came!"
Was it still too late?
I offered Greg a strained smile when he grabbed my shoulder and turned me around for a bro hug. His eyes lit up like the fourth of July when he noticed Toni and Kaylee. He gave Toni a once--over first. Before we'd left, she'd changed into a knee length white dress. It was modest, covering most of her neck. Her hair was tied back and just now I noticed how the makeup she'd applied made her look even more so every bit the good girl she was. He moved on quickly to Kaylee.
She noticed his stare, giving him a bored one in return. There wasn't really anything special about what she was wearing. Just some simple black jeans, Nike shoes, a deadpool shirt and red leather jacket. Simple. But she still managed to look hot as fuck.
Greg let out a low whistle. "No wonder you've been keeping her to yourself. If she was mine, we'd never leave the house."
Kaylee lifted an unimpressed eyebrow at him, while Toni's smile suddenly fell. I let out a nervous chuckle, subtly wrapping my arm around Toni's waist. She smiled weakly at the gesture.
"Actually, that's Kaylee," I said, then took a deep breath. "This is Toni, my girlfriend."
Everyone was quiet at first.
Then Penelope started laughing. She wiped actual tears from the corners of her eyes. "Damn Sawyer, I haven't laughed like that for months."
"Penelope.. I don't think he's joking." Orion said quietly.
This was going to be a very long night.
