Kaylee
It'd barely been two minutes since Toni left when my phone dinged. I didn't need a PHD in psycology to know that she was the one texting me. I had a hunch as to why she was sending me messages while she was supposedly meant to be using the bathroom. I glanced at my phone, sighing.
"What's the matter, run out of insults?" Penelope asked. She tried to raise an eyebrow, but failed epically. It looked more like her face was spasming.
This bitch gave me way too much to work with, there was legit no challenge. "No, I just realized you weren't worth my time."
I stood up from the couch, glancing in Orion's direction. He was the owner of the house and I didn't want him to think I was about to head upstairs and snoop through his place. "I'm gonna grab something from the car. Be right back."
Fletcher leapt to his feet all too eagerly. "I'll join you."
"Fuck off, slimeball." I said sharply.
He slumped back into the couch, turning towards Maya. His backup, as Sawyer had explained.
Penelope waved. "Don't hurry back."
Rolling my eyes, I turned and started up the stairs. Bathroom. Bathroom. Where the fuck was it? The living room was the size of my old apartment and the kitchen was the biggest I'd ever seen. Why the fuck did this guy need so much space?
I looked at the text she sent me.
Toni: Meet me in the bathroom. Need ur help.
She couldn't have been more specific? Like, for instance, down the hallway to the left of the living room. Down the second hallway off of the kitchen?
Fuck me.
This place was a maze.
"Kaylee."
I flipped around, blushing slightly. Okay, so maybe I was ashamed to admit he'd startled me. But only a little.
"What the fuck is going on?" I asked bitterly.
He shrugged, gesturing past him into the bathroom. "Beats me, she keeps going on about 'giving that viper a taste of her own medicine.' "
It took me a second for his words to sink in, when they did, I burst out laughing. "Viper? Viper?"
Toni maneuvered around Sawyer to grab my wrist and drag me into the bathroom with them. She closed the door behind us, trapping all three of us inside. I might have been uncomfortable, had I not been laughing so hard tears were starting to form in my eyes.
"You're not helping," she said, crossing her arms self consciously.
After inhaling a deep breath, I leaned back against the counter and collected myself. "Okay.. why am I here?"
She chewed her bottom lip, glancing at Sawyer off the corner of her eyes. "I want Penelope to know that Sawyer's moved on and that he doesn't want her anymore. It doesn't matter if he says it, she doesn't believe it."
"And I'm here because?" I asked, drawing the words out.
She locked eyes with me. "Because you're good at getting people to back off."
I rubbed my hands together, grinning widely at the two of them. "Operation, show that bitch he's yours, has commenced."
Sawyer shook his head at my theatrics, but I could see the small smile that he was trying to hide.
"So.. how do I do that?"
"Mark him."
"What?"
She looked genuinely confused, so I grabbed her shoulders and turned her to face him. "In virgin terms, give him a hickey."
Her cheeks turned dark red as she turned to look over her shoulder at me. "You know that I'm not a virgin, Kaylee."
I chuckled, shoving her towards him. "Could've fooled me."
She shot me a dark look, then looked back and forth between Sawyer and I, a new type of blush coating her face. "I--uhm--I don't.. you know I don't like hickeys."
"In this case, I thought you'd make an exception."
"Isn't there something else--"
"No."
She looked at him again, shyly this time. "I've never enjoyed giving or recieving hickeys.. to be honest."
He looked surprised, but quickly hid his expression. He shrugged, his back to the door. "Doesn't matter. You don't have to do this Toni, especially if it's not something you don't want to do."
"I--I do, but I don't."
I sighed, rubbing the spot between my eyes. "I'm way too sober for this."
"You're not sober." Toni shot back.
"Can we please just get the fuck on with this?" I asked impatiently.
"Can you do it?"
Maybe the words didn't register in my head, or I thought maybe she'd been talking to Sawyer and I somehow hadn't heard the rest of their conversation. When I looked up and met her pleading gaze, I wasn't comprehending what was happening. "What?"
She backed away from Sawyer and pouted her lips. "Will you do it?"
"What?" I asked, wide eyed. "Fuck no!"
"But Kaylee! Why not?"
"He's your boyfriend."
"And I'm your best friend, besides, like you've always said, it's just a hickey." Toni said nervously.
"Let me make something perfectly fucking clear," I said making wild hand gestures. "People don't give their best friends boyfriend hickeys!"
"Well.." Sawyer began to protest.
I shot him a dark look before returning my attention to her. "Neither does someone asktheir best friend to give their boyfriend a hickey."
"Don't be so dramatic," she took a deep breath and stared at the floor. "It's not like I asked you to kill someone."
I probably would have taken it better, had she asked for help to kill someone rather than give her boyfriend a hickey. I would do just about anything for her, she was my best friend. But this.. it didn't feel right. We had to draw a line somewhere, and this should be it.
It should, but it wasn't.
One look at her pale blue eyes and my reasoning began to blur. What should have been obvious black and white-- right and wrong-- turned gray.
She sat down on the closed toilet seat with a defeated sigh, her hands clasped together over her lap. "I'm sorry I asked.. it's just.. never mind."
"I'll do it. For you."
"What?!" Sawyer asked, his voice an octave higher than usual.
"But we never speak of this bullshit again, kapeesh?"
She nodded happily.
