Sawyer
I didn't get it. Not even a little bit. Sitting on the L shaped couch in the living room, my arm around Toni's shoulders and the box of pizza on the coffee table, I looked between the two friends. Toni was soft and quiet, her friend was.. Brash and outgoing. They had nothing in common, not even their taste in movies.
"I want to watch Ever After." Toni said firmly. She narrowed her eyes at her best friend who sat at the other end of the couch.
"Bah," Kaylee stuck her tongue out. "You've forced me to watch that fucking movie a thousand times. Let's watch one of the new releases."
Toni rolled her eyes. More sass. This situation was becoming more confusing by the second. "We haven't watched Ever After in weeks."
Kaylee's laugh was dry and devoid of humor. "You say that like it's an eternity."
"Sawyer wants to watch my favorite movie, don't you honey?" Toni asked. She twisted her torso to face me, her pale blue eyes wide and full of warning.
One wrong move and this whole thing could explode. Yep, I got the message. But Ever After? I'd never seen the movie before, never even heard of it. It sounded like a chick flick and I fucking hated chick flicks. It's for the business. It's for my father and everything he's built. Everything Icould one day build.
"Nothing would make me happier."
I probably laid it on a bit thick, but it was too late to take it back and do it differently.
Kaylee chuckled, her dark brown eyes sparkling with mischief. She grabbed the remote from the coffee table. "You're going to regret that decision eye candy."
"I have a name you know."
"Oh?"
"It's Sawyer."
"Hmm?"
"Did you hear me?"
"No," she said flicking her hair over her shoulder. "I ignored you just fine, eye candy."
Toni laughed nervously, taking my hand in her much smaller one. She looked between me and her friend, her fingers squeezing the blood flow out of mine.
The movie popped up on the flat screen tv. Great. A fucking chick flick. I sank back further into the couch, frowning at the lame background music that started to play in the background. This was going to be stupid. The rest of my time here was going to be hell.
"I'm going to enjoy watching you pretend to like this shit." Kaylee said to me with giddy impatience.
Fan-fucking-tastic.
I looked at her again, the dark curly hair, the studs and rings that climbed up her ear. Black shirt, black jeans, combat boots. There was even a tattoo sticking out from the collar of her shirt. From what I could make out, there were ravens and maybe some branches. She was the perfect example of the girls I preferred. Dark, mysterious, naughty. She had that look in her eyes, like she wasn't afraid of anything.
The good girl-- Toni, and the bad girl-- Kaylee. I'd never seen a more unlikely friendship.
"If I hit it one time I'ma pipe her,
"If I hit it two times then I like her,
"If I hit it three times I'ma wife her-"
G-eazy interrupted the voices conversing on the tv. It was a godsend. Or was it a gift from the devil? I didn't know, I was just grateful for the pausing of the movie.
Kaylee arched her back off of the couch to get her phone from her pocket.
A dozen dirty images flashed through my mind. I liked her in that position, I'd like it even more if the two of us were naked and I was between her legs.
"Who the fuck is this and what the fuck do you want?"
I shook my head of the mental images, pursing my lips to keep from laughing. I'd never heard anyone answer the phone like that, and I've come up with some pretty creative shit, if I do say so myself.
She gave a sultry smile, staring at the wall above the tv. "I'll be there in ten minutes."
She hung up and turned to face us.
"You're leaving already?" Toni asked, disappointment lacing her voice. "The movie has barely just started."
She shrugged, standing up from the couch. "When sex calls, I come."
I choked on my own saliva, trying to cover it with a caugh.
Kaylee wiggled her fingers at us. "I'll be back tomorrow!"
"Be safe!"
Silence fell over the room after the front door closed behind her. It was a stifling, uncomfortable kind of silence. Awkward. This was so awkward. To make things worse, I scooted away from Toni and retracted my arm from around her shoulders.
"I'm sorry about Kaylee.." She said quietly. "She can be, well, she can be quite the poty mouth and brutally honest."
"I'd fuck him."
Those words spun on a loop through my mind, along with the image of her back arched to that perfect angle. Only an experienced woman can pull that move off so effortlessly.
"I think we should practise kissing some more." I said without really thinking. Or maybe the problem is I was thinking too much. I had to replace these inappropriate thoughts with something else.
"I--um--"
"You know, in case she notices we haven't kissed much." I said smoothly. This poor woman had no idea what she signed up for.
"Oh.. okay," she said, slowly leaning closer. "Like this?"
Dammit, if there was one thing that turned me off, it was a woman who asked for permission. A woman who didn't know what she wanted and wasn't willing to risk everything to get it. I had a type. An unhealthy one.
Instead of answering her, I cupped the back of her neck, twisting my fingers into her honey blond locks. My lips crashed against hers in a fierce, demanding kiss.
She tried to respond with gentle kisses, her hands hovering just over my shoulders.
The thrust of my tongue slipping between her lips crossed a line for her. She pulled back, her eyebrows turning so far down, it looked unnatural. "I don't.. Do you normally kiss like that?"
I exhaled a frustrated sigh, raking my fingers through my hair. This was pointless. Standing up, I motioned towards the end of the hall. "I'm going to unpack some of my things.."
"Oh.. okay."
There was that disappointment again.
That damned look.
She was going to give up on me and say to hell with this deal. It wouldn't take long. A week, two at the most. I just wasn't cut out for the sweet boyfriend role.
