I gasped, feeling my every being shatter as my own presence tore from my mind, forcing me back into the darkened void.
Will’s familiar red eyes glowed in the darkness, the familiar black feathers and wind rounding me like a hurricane.
A single tear slipped from my eye, sliding down my cheek.
A sudden sharp pain struck through my head, and I tipped my chin up, crying out.
But when my eyes locked on the ceiling, my darkened reflection stared back at me… a dark, black pentagram glowed on my forehead, vanishing into my skin.
And then it hit… the slice in my side.
I threw my head further back, more tears slipping down my cheeks as the crescent moon burned into my side like being carved with a knife.
As I felt the shape curl to a finish, my eyes suddenly rolled to the back of my head, and I fell into the black void.
But suddenly, Will caught me, letting me land in his arms.
I gazed up hazily, finding his lashes lowered as he gazed down at me.
“There’s nothing to fear…” he whispered then, breath dusting my cheeks. “Only me. Nothing will hurt you again. So close your eyes, now.”
I let my lashes flutter shut, and my head lopped to the side.

“Lying to yourself will only make things worse,” the darkened voice said. “I understand the desire to live in a fantasy… but it only makes your life more of a misery.”
I gazed up into the darkness then, lashes lowering. “Is this why you entered my dreams, William?”
His low chuckle echoed through the room. “I am your protector, Suki. Therefore… I must protect your mind, as well.”
I just gazed up. “I liked lying to myself.”
“Did you?” he retorted. “Did you enjoy the feeling of everything being wrong? Everything being off? Something doesn’t feel right? It didn’t bother you?”
I just stared further into the darkness. “I’m tired.”
“I know,” he said then. “But you must understand… lying to yourself isn’t going to make things better. Especially with how desperate you are with finding this killer.”
I just lowered my lashes. “I know.”
“Good,” he said then, “once you wake up, I made a very delicious breakfast to make up for my invasion of your dreams. My apologies, mistress.”
“I don’t know if I’ll forgive you,” I teased. “Monster.”
He just chuckled. “You soon will, mistress. Wake up now. I made pancaaaaakes.”
“Yeah, whatever.”
