"Max if you don't sit down, I'm going to kill you." Lyra screams to Max over the phone. I just watch as they argue, is this what having a sibling is like? If it is I'm glad I don't have one.
"What is going on?" I asked confused.
"My parents had to work late, so I'm stuck taking my brother to his doctor's appointment." She says readjusting her phone.
"Bummer."
"Tell me about it. So, what did you want to tell me about the witch and voodoo stuff?" I swear sometimes I don't think she actually listens to me, ever.
"Voodoo Lyra. When did I ever mention Voodoo?" I asked curiously.
"I don't know, you know I have a short attention span." I let out a huge sigh.
"So, anyways about the visions, yesterday when I was at school I s-." Before I'm able to finish my sentence, I'm cut off by Lyra screaming at Max.
"If you don't sit down, I will stick that lego up your ass." She spats out. He immediately sits down, hands in his lap.
"You're an asshole." Max tells Lyra.
"Oh, I'll show you asshole." I hope there isn't any weapons near her. She turns her attention back to me, her fire red hair stealing the show. "Anyway, tell me about the visions again."
"Right, anyways when I was at school, I saw the bloody hands." She lets out a gasp over the phone, her brother mean mugs her.
"Whose hands were they? Was it your blood?"
"That's the problem it wasn't my blood or hands. Also, it wasn't anyone I knew it doesn't make any sense Ly." I lean back and rub my temples.
"Maybe what you saw wasn't the actual vision, like it could've just been a coincidence that his hands bled." She does have a point.
"Could be?"
"Did you find anything in the books?" Oh, crap I forgot to tell her that.
"I actually did find something. When I was waiting for Alexander to pick me up, I read something interesting in the books. It said that the reason the four girls were placed higher is because they were the more powerful ones. Also, the picture I saw of them when I touched the oak tree was in the book." I wait a few seconds until she finally says something.
"Ok Quinneth that's totally spooky, is there anyone you can talk to about this because I think your definitely a witch." She tells me.
"I don't that I'm a witch, I have no powers." I say staring at my palms. Trust me I've tried to conquer the wind and move objects, but nothing has happened.
Yesterday, when I went to get the mail, I started moving my hands around hoping to creating something, anything. Instead, the thing I made happen was my neighbors thinking I'm some weirdo, and the mailman. Next time I try these things out, it will be in the confines of my room, with the windows shut.
"When you find more stuff let me know the doctor is calling us right now."
"Ok, don't kill Max I like him, bye." She says bye and hangs up. I throw the phone on my red furry pillow. This has been rattling my brain for days, I don't even know who to talk to about this.
What the hell does all this mean? Why is it so hard to figure out? My hands needle through my hair, hoping to find the answers there.
Suddenly, my phone starts to buzz. "Ly if you're calling me to me that you killed your brother, I don't want any part in it." I laugh.
"I don't know who Lyra is, but if she does kill her brother please don't tell me." I hear Abel say over the phone. I really need to make sure I ask who's on the phone first before I say anything.
"Sorry about that..just ignore it." I mumble, embarrassed.
"Will do. Your book is available do you want to come get it now?"
"I'll come now..see you in 10." I hang up the phone and put my shoes on. Walking down the stairs, I write my grandpa a note that I'm leaving to the library, just in case he comes back.
Before I'm able to pull out the driveway, my phone buzzes twice. The first message is from Alexander asking me where I was, and the second message is from my Grandpa asking me to pick up more toilet paper.
I text Alexander to tell him I'm on my way to the library, and then I tell my Grandpa I'll pick it up.
In a matter of 15 minutes, I end up at the library. Getting out the car, I head into the really cold building. "Hi, how may I help you?" A tall girl with a French braid, dark skin and braces asked me.
"I have a book on hold. My name is Quinneth Worthingshire." She starts to type in my name, I drum my fingers on the counter, taking in the ambiance of my surroundings.
"Um I don't k-."
"Hey Quinn." Coming from a back room is Abel, his beautiful eyes focus on me. "I've got this Agnes, can you go help Crystal out in the back? She's having troubles with the fax machine." She rolls her eyes while groaning.
"Again? God she'll be the death of me." Agnes walks off stomping. Now it's just me, Abel and the book I've been waiting for.
"Hi, is that my book?" I ask pointing to the book cradled in his hand.
"Yeah, here you go. You may have the book for three weeks then after that its late and we'll have to charge you a dollar a day." He gives me the book and my library card back.
"I'll make sure I bring it back on time. Cross my heart." I do the gesture.
"You better or there will be consequences." He gives me a serious look while wagging his finger.
"I'm shaking in my rain boots." We both laugh at each other.
"Let me walk you out." He says coming from behind the counter.
"No, you don't have to." I shrug him off. "Plus, I'm sure someone will come to the counter looking to get checked out, it'd be rude to make them wait.
His eyebrow arches, a look of amusement in his face. "You do know people don't read, right? Most kids come to use the free WiFi. I want-no insist walking you to your car, its the gentleman thing to do." He opens the door for me, I walk out and he follows behind me. "How's the research?"
"Research?"
"Yeah, you told me last time all this was for some research project for school." He says rubbing his palms together.
"Right, I just spaced. It's going fine I'm finding a lot of information." I really need to remember my lies, it's getting embarrassing.
"Happens to me too. This you?" He points to my bug.
"Yeppo."
"Yeppo?" He gives me a weird look.
"Hey, if the oxford dictionary can create words so can I." He holds his hands up in defense.
"Got a point." He says agreeing with me.
"I got to go, my Grandpa wants me to get toilet paper. If I don't get the three-ply, he'll kill me." I laugh.
"Don't let me hold you up, see you later." He waves goodbye to me.
"You too." I get in my car and head to the grocery store.
Alexander's P.O.V.-
Driving down the street I take a left and pull into the library. Quinneth texted me earlier that she was at the library, being a cool boyfriend, I wanted to surprise her. I turn the engine off and look around the parking lot. Her yellow bug is nowhere in this lot, did I miss her?
Maybe I'm not looking deep enough, I step out and search all over the lot, nothing.
"Hey man, you looking for something." I turn around to see a red-headed guy talking to me.
"Yes, uh I don't know if you can help me though."
"Try me." He says taking a puff of his cigarette.
"Ok sure, I looking for my girlfriend, Quinneth." He runs it over in his head for a few seconds then gives me a response.
"Worthingshire? The one with the big hair. Doe eyes and a killer personality." That's....oddly specific, but I'll run with it. This guy better not have a thing for Quinn, she's spoken for.
"That's my girl." I smile.
"You just missed her. She left a few minutes ago." Damn it, if I was a few minutes early, but my mom kept rambling on and on, I couldn't get out the house fast enough.
"Did she say where she was going?" He takes a drag, then puffs out the smoke.
"Uh, she mentioned something about getting tissue paper. Three-ply I think."
"That's... kind of helpful. Thanks..." I wait for him to tell me his name.
"Abel."
"Thank you, Abel you have a good day." I leave him to smoke his cigarette as I head for my car. Before I'm able to get in, he stops me.
"Watch out for her. She's a good one." I give him a smile.
"I know."
"Also, tell her good luck on her research project." I stop in my tracks.
"What do you mean research project, why was she really here?" I question him. He gets this look on his face, I can't explain it.
"She came by to pick up a book for her research project." She told me that all of this was for fun, not a research project. What is she hiding from me?
"Right... I forgot she tells me so much I can't remember it all." Getting in the car, I start the engine, now I have to go find her, maybe she's at her house already doesn't take that long to get tissue paper.
Walking up the cobble stone walkway, I knock on her door. When I knocked on it the door slowly creaked open, is she here? Hesitantly I walk into the house, no one seems to be home.
"Quinneth!" I scream throughout the house, nothing. Maybe she's upstairs, I can't tell you how many times I've screamed her name and she didn't hear me. Going up the squeaky stairs, I get to her room. Pushing the door open slowly, no sign of life here. I'll just wait for her; she can't be that long.
I see a plethora of papers and books scattered everywhere. Out of all the written material on it, something catches my eyes. It's a piece of paper with what looks like a list. I began to read it from top to bottom.
The Oak Tree
Bloody Hands
Four girls in a tomb
Then it goes on to talk about them being burned at the stake and trying to make the connection between them. She also mentions that the vision of the oak tree and bloody hands were things she actually saw. What is all of this? Suddenly, an eerie feeling comes over me.
She's coming into her power. I was against the thought of Aren and Christina that she may be one because they havent existed in years.
In school we learned about the history of Zastitnik's. How to know if a Zastitnik is coming into their power, they have visions. I have no idea what number one and two mean, but I do know what the four girls in a tomb is.
Those are the four werewolf witches; they make up the First Power. Quinneth's not a witch, so what do they have to do with her? The First Power has been dead for over 300 years, no one has even mentioned them by name, mostly because their scary. They've ransacked towns, killed innocent people.
From the corner of my eye, I see a female physique. Quinn stands at the door with a pack of toilet paper in hand staring at me, most likely confused why I'm here.
"What are you doing here? And why are you reading my stuff?"
Quinneth's P.O.V.-
Readjusting the tissue paper in my arms, I head to the house. I had to go to two different stores for this tissue, grandpa better be lucky I love him. I move the tissue into one arm so I can unlock the door with the other. I push my key into the lock, but the door opens itself.
Walking in, I accidently slip on something from the floor. Looking down, I see it's the piece of paper I left my grandpa. Why is it on the floor? There wasn't a gush of air when the door opened, something suspicious is going on.
In my room, I see Alexander leaning over my bed looking at my notes. Now that I think about, I thought I saw his car parked on the street, but just assumed it was someone else's.
"What are you doing here? And why are you reading my stuff?"
"I was here to surprise you, the door opened up and I thought you were up here." He explains.
"Right, but the other question still stands, why are you reading my stuff?" His face is riddled with embarrassment.
"Quinneth what is all of this stuff?" He asks flapping around my notebook. Tossing the tissue paper on the floor, I quickly walk over to my notebook and tuck it under my arm.
"I told you it's just a fun thing I'm doing."
"You're lying to me, and I don't know why. I stopped by the library to surprise you and that Abel guy told me you were doing all this work for a research project, but you told me it was for fun." Alright, he got me, but that doesn't lower the fact that he was spying through my stuff, can I even trust him?
"I don't have to explain anything to you." I snap.
"Yes the hell you do! You questioned me when I was gone for like two weeks!" His voice raises.
"Something you never actually told me."
"You said you didn't want to know."
"Note to self-Alexander a girl forgives, but never forgets." He lets out a groan while walking over to my door. "Where the hell do you think you're going?"
"I'm just walking over to the door that's all."
"No, you were going to leave, moving from in front of me to the door was totally unnecessary."
"Quinneth I just wanted to move." He lets out a deep sigh. "What are these visions you wrote down about?" He asked curiously. This is why I didn't want him to know, I can't tell them what they are because I don't even know the answer to it.
"I... can't tell you." He lets out a frustrated groan. I can't tell you because there's nothing TO tell.
"Why not Quinn? This obviously means something to you, for the last week you've been reading all these books. We're dating now we have to be honest with each other."
"Look Alexander, I want to tell you I really do... but I can't." Before he can respond his phone buzzes.
I study his face as he looks at it, it shifts from angry to concerned. "Look we can continue this later, but I have to handle something." He kisses my cheek as he leaves me standing in the middle of my room.
I don't like arguing with him, it gives me a bad feeling in my chest. I push all my papers and books on the floor and plop down on the bed.
"What the hell." I mumble to myself. I feel a lump under me, pulling it out I see that it's my package I got from Ida's house.
Last night I fell asleep quickly so I never opened it. I have all the time in the world now, might as well open it.
Tearing open the brown packaging, a necklace comes out. It's actually quite beautiful, a black lotus flower with small intricate designs. It looks old, like something my great- great grandmother Mildred would wear. My grandpa showed me many photos of her, in every photo she wore clunky and weird looking jewelry. No name was left on the package so I don't know who to thank.
Walking over to my mirror, I put the necklace on. When my fingers touch the lotus flower, something strange happened. It sends shock throughout my body. My body seizes up, fingers become frozen, legs stiff like bone. A sense of danger and fear surrounds me. As quick ad lightening, I snatch off the necklace I throw it over by my painting easel.
The sun reflects off of it, showing it's true colors.
Evil.
Someone who doesn't like me sent that, for what reason? I don't know.
Alexander's P.O.V.-
I can't believe she wouldn't tell me about the visions, why couldn't she trust me?
Those three points she had on her paper really has me thinking, how is she linked to the First Power?
I wanted to further the conversation with her, but Christian sent me an SOS, him and Aren only send me that when it something fairly important.
As soon as I open the door to the pack house Aren and Christian are standing by the entrance area, worry fills their faces.
"What's going on? You sent me an SOS Christian." They both look towards each other, trying to figure out who was going to tell me the news first.
"Guys it can't be that scary." I joke.
Looking at my best friends, they were not up for jokes. "Follow us." Aren says. We all three walk into the main room of the house, on the couch I see a man with pepper grey hair and a black trench coat on. On the back of his neck, I see a mark, not just any mark, but the mark of Khan.
The mystery man gets up, my face fills with confusion and curiosity. Two words manage to leave my lips.
"Vet Khan?"
